AC transfer switch A component of a NonStop™ Cluster Switch (model 6770) that provides access to dual AC
power sources and the ability to switch between the two sources if one fails. The AC transfer
switch draws power from its primary power source as long as it is available. If the primary source
fails, the AC transfer switch is switched to draw power from the secondary power source.
action An operation, such as a diagnostic test, that can be performed on a selected resource. Use the
Actions dialog box to display and perform actions.
Examples:
Load (action on a selected processor)
Up (action on a selected disk)
address A number, label, or name that indicates the virtual or physical location of information as stored
in the computer’s memory. An address can refer to a storage location, a terminal, a peripheral
device, a cursor location, or any other physical item in a computer system.
alarm A message, similar to an event message, that reports detected faults or abnormal conditions
on the server. Each alarm contains information that describes the detected problem and repair
information. Depending on their severity and type, alarms might trigger a problem incident
report.
An alarm condition is indicated visually in the tree pane by a colored icon displayed next to the
component causing the alarm.

appearance side The side of an HP NonStop S-series system enclosure that contains disk customer-replaceable
units CRUs and power monitor and control unit (PMCU) CRUs that do not require cables. The
appearance side always has a short door and panel, or a tall door, that is required for cooling
the enclosure.The appearance side is opposite the service side. The appearance-side door is
lockable for security purposes.
asynchronous A mode of serial-data transmission in which characters are sent at random and the transmission
is not synchronized with a separate clock signal.That is, there is no timing relationship between
the end of one character and the start of the next. The data contains extra bits: a start bit to
signal the beginning of a byte and one or more stop bits to signal the end of the byte.These
start and stop bits allow the receiver to determine the correct synchronization. Contrast with
synchronous.
ATM 3 ServerNet
adapter (ATM3SA)
A ServerNet adapter that provides access to Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks
from an HP NonStop S-series server. The 3860 ATM3SA supports the ATM User-Network
Interface (UNI) specification over a 155-megabit/second (Mbps) OC-3 Sonet (Synchronous
Optical Network) connection.
attachment A file that contains information supplementing the information in an incident report.
attribute A data item associated with a resource.
You can view all attributes in the Attributes dialog box, and you can modify certain attributes.
authorization key A password required to log on to a modem. If you plan to allow dial-outs to a service provider,
you must specify the authorization key of the service provider’ s modem during OSM configuration.

backplane A board that has connectors, on one or both sides of the board, into which circuit board
assemblies plug. Backplanes are typically located behind card cages.
