1 Overview
This guide is designed for system administrators who use the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack
for System Center, Insight Management Agents, Insight Management WBEM Providers and other
HP applications and tools to manage the operations of HP ProLiant servers in a Microsoft System
Center environment.
You should be familiar with the configuration and operation of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft
System Center Operations Manager (SCOM), HP Insight Management WBEM Providers, and HP
Insight Management Agents. Because of the potential risk of data loss, only individuals who are
experienced with using this software should implement the procedures described in this guide. This
guide supplements the Microsoft System Center user documentation.
Supported hardware and software information for the ProLiant Server Management Pack v 1.x is
included in “HP ProLiant Server Management Pack (v 1.x) for Microsoft System Center Support
Information” (page 93). Support information for the ProLiant Server Management Pack v 2.x is
included in the HP SCOM Management Packs User Guide. For links to this and other product

Introduction
HP delivers management packs that complement and extend Microsoft System Center, integrating
alert processing, state monitoring, and hardware resource lifecycle management for HP ProLiant
servers.
Designed specifically for System Center, the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack provides
predefined discoveries, views, monitors, event processing rules, and tasks that enable administrators
to proactively streamline IT operations and ensure increased systems availability by monitoring
Microsoft Windows environments and HP ProLiant server hardware platforms through the SCOM
console.
The management pack discovers and groups HP ProLiant servers by hardware platform type.
Default discoveries and monitors highlight the state of HP hardware and management software
components and present a consolidated view of system status. The management pack supports
two sources of instrumentation:
• HP Insight Management Agents.
Predefined event processing rules build on the capability of the HP Insight Management Agents
to display Windows Event Log entries for HP ProLiant server hardware as alerts in the SCOM
console, including real-time and prefailure event definitions.
• HP Insight Management WBEM Providers.

Providers to display Windows Event Log entries for HP ProLiant server hardware as alerts in
the SCOM console, including real-time and prefailure event definitions.
For advanced hardware lifecycle management and remote administration of HP ProLiant servers,
the management pack includes tasks that launch HP Systems Insight Manager for group systems
administration, the HP System Management Homepage for single system health and configuration
monitoring, and advanced remote server administration through the HP Integrated Lights-Out
Management Processor when installed.
