Update BIOS before adding memory modules
Before adding new memory, make sure you update the computer to the latest BIOS. For Windows 10 models,
see Updating the BIOS on page 97. For Windows 8.1 models, see Updating the BIOS on page 99, and for
Windows 7 models, see Updating the BIOS on page 104. For Ubuntu models, go to http://www.hp.com/
support, and select your country. Select Drivers & Downloads, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
CAUTION: Failure to update the computer to the latest BIOS prior to installing new memory may result in
various system problems.
Before removing a memory module, follow these steps:
1. Turn o the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is o or in Hibernation, turn
the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the service door (see Service door on page 45).
5. Remove the battery (see Battery on page 47).
Remove the memory module:
1. Spread the retaining tabs (1) on each side of the memory module slot to release the memory module.
(The edge of the module opposite the slot rises away from the computer.)
