1 Drive care Drives are fragile computer components that must be handled with care. The following cautions apply to all drives. Additional cautions are included with the procedures to which they apply.
Drive care Ä 1–2 CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the computer, damage to a drive, or loss of information, observe these precautions: ■ Initiate standby and allow the display to turn off before you move a computer or external hard drive from one location to another. ■ Before handling a drive, discharge static electricity by touching the unpainted metal surface of the drive. ■ Do not touch the drive connector pins on a removable drive or on the computer.
2 IDE drive light The IDE drive light blinks when either the primary hard drive or an optical drive is being accessed.
3 Hard drive HP Mobile Data Protection with Digital Accelerometer HP Mobile Data Protection with digital accelerometer protects your disk drive by parking the drive and halting I/O requests when you ■ Drop your computer. ■ Move your computer with the display closed while running on battery power. A short time after the end of one of these events, HP Mobile Data Protection returns the disk drive to normal operation. the primary internal disk drive is protected by HP Mobile ✎ Only Data Protection.
Hard drive HP Mobile Data Protection status An icon in the notification area of your computer indicates whether the drives are currently protected and whether the drive is parked. If HP Mobile Data Protection is disabled, a red X is superimposed over the icon. In addition, the IDE drive light on your computer changes to an amber color to show that the drive is parked. If HP Mobile Data Protection has parked the drive, your computer ■ Will not shut down. ■ Will not initiate standby or hibernation.
Hard drive HP Mobile Data Protection software The HP Mobile Data Protection software enables you to ■ Enable and disable HP Mobile Data Protection. ■ Hide or show the icon in the notification area. ■ Determine whether a drive in the system is supported. To open the software and change settings: 1. Double-click the icon in the notification area. – or – Right-click the icon in the notification area, and then select Settings. 2. Click the appropriate button to change settings. 3. Click OK.
Hard drive Replacing the hard drive Ä■ CAUTION: To prevent system lockup and loss of information: Shut down the computer before removing the hard drive from the hard drive bay. Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in standby, or in hibernation. ■ If you are not sure whether the computer is off or in hibernation, turn the notebook on by pressing the power/standby button. Then shut down the computer through the operating system. To remove the hard drive: 1. Save your work. 2.

Hard drive 9. Loosen the hard drive screw 1. 10. Pull the hard drive tab 2 to the left to disconnect the hard drive. 11. Lift the hard drive 3 from the computer.
Hard drive To install a hard drive: 1. Insert the hard drive into the hard drive bay on the bottom of the computer 1. 2. Pull the hard drive tab 2 to the right to connect the hard drive. 3. Tighten the hard drive screw 3.
Hard drive 4. Align the tabs 1 on the hard drive cover with the notches on the computer. 5. Close the cover 2. 6. Tighten the hard drive cover screws 3.
4 Optical drives Using optical discs An optical drive, such as a DVD-ROM drive, supports optical discs (DVDs and CDs). These discs are used to store or transport information and to play music and movies. DVDs have a higher capacity than CDs.
Optical drives The computer can read or write to optical drives as described in the following table.

Optical drives Removing an optical disc (with power) If the computer is running on external or battery power: 1. Turn on the computer. 2. Press the release button 1 on the drive bezel to release the media tray, and then pull out the tray 2. 3. Remove the disc 3 from the tray by gently pressing down on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the disc. Hold the disk by the edges and avoid touching the flat surfaces. the tray is not fully accessible, tilt the disc carefully as you ✎ Ifremove it. 4.
Optical drives Removing an optical disc (without power) If external or battery power is not available: 1. Insert the end of a paper clip 1 into the release access in the front bezel of the drive. 2. Press gently until the media tray is released, and then pull out the tray 2. 3. Remove the disc 3 from the tray by gently pressing down on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the disc. Hold the disc by the edges and avoid touching the flat surfaces.
Optical drives Avoiding standby or hibernation Ä CAUTION: To prevent possible audio and video degradation, or loss of audio or video playback functionality, do not initiate standby or hibernation while reading or writing to a CD or DVD. To prevent loss of information, do not initiate standby or hibernation when writing to a CD or DVD. If standby or hibernation is accidentally initiated during playback of a drive medium (such as a CD or DVD): 4–6 ■ Your playback may be interrupted.
