IMPORTANT:
This installation uses the HP SAS split cable to replace the existing SAS cable from the host SAS
controller to the server's SAS hard disk drive bays. It diverts the wiring from one of the hard disk drive
bays to the tape drive. You should be aware that you may lose the use of a hard disk drive bay with
this cabling solution.
CAUTION:
This option normally disconnects the data path to the highest-numbered disk bay, but it is not always
possible to identify which disk this is. For this reason, do not use option 3 with RAID configurations.
If the internal port on the host SAS controller has a mini-SAS connector, use the supplied cable. If it
has an Infinband connector, you must purchase a separate cable.
Always refer to http://www.hp.com/go/connect BEFORE installing your tape drive to check that this
configuration is supported and which cable you require.
1. Remove the tie wrap and dust cover on the supplied mini-SAS cable. You will need to use the
SAS connector on the second branch of the cable for this installation.
2. HP strongly recommends that the tape drive is connected to the second SAS port on the host
controller (this is the port that connects to the hard disk drive bays with the highest numbers).
Look at the front of the server and establish which SAS cable is connected to the hard disk drive
bays with the highest numbers.
Cable routing varies from one server to another. You may need to remove other components,
such as fan banks, while you work with the cable. Always refer to your server documentation for
server-specific cabling instructions.
3. If http://www.hp.com/go/connect advises that you will lose the use of a hard disk drive bay,
also identify the location of that disk drive bay. (Select tape backup and navigate down to the
Hardware Compatibility table for your make of server.)
NOTE:
If the hard disk bay is in use, do not use the split cable (even if other disk bays are empty), because
you will lose use of the disk in the disk bay and may damage your server configuration. Also, do
not move an existing disk to accommodate this configuration because you will have to rebuild
your RAID configuration. You must purchase and install an additional HBA, see
http://www.hp.com/go/connect for supported products. Go to

28 for further instructions.
