4 Installing an external SAS tape drive
Please refer to “Installing an internal DAT tape drive” on page 21, if you are installing an internal
DAT tape drive.

The illustrations in this chapter show the HP StorageWorks DAT 320 tape drive. The process is the
same for all models of tape drive.
Before you start
This installation connects the tape drive directly to the external port. The cable supplied with the tape
drive is suitable for connecting to an external mini-SAS (SFF-8086/8087) connector on a dedicated
HBA or on the server's SAS controller. If your server has an external SAS 4i connector (SFF-8484),
a suitable cable is available, but must be purchased separately, see https://www.hp.com/go/connect.
NOTE:
An alternative option for some HP ProLiant servers is to connect to a spare internal port on the server's
SAS controller. This option uses one of the HP SAS split cables, which must be purchased separately.
This cabling option is described in Appendix A.

If the server does not have an active external port, you must purchase and install an additional HBA
that supports external connection. If you are installing a new HBA, a spare PCI slot is required for the
new HBA. See http://www.hp.com/go/connect for recommended products.
NOTE:
If you use a recommended cable to attach directly to the external SAS port and the tape drive does
not function, one possible cause is that the port is inactive or not supported for external tape devices.
