Configuring the HP 5900v virtual switch
HP 5900v configuration includes the following tasks:
• Install a VFE on each ESXi host to forward VM traffic.
• Access the vCenter from the vSphere Client to perform the following tasks:
Task Descri
p
tion
Create a VDS and assign all ESXi hosts to the VDS.
This VDS is a switching domain. When a VM
migrates between ESXi hosts in this domain, the
virtual switch can move its network policy to the
destination host for consistent policy enforcement.
Configure the uplink group for forwarding VM traffic to
the physical access switch.
You can have only one uplink group for each VDS.
In this group, add all physical NICs that connect the
ESXi hosts to the access switch.
Create downlink port groups by service type for
forwarding traffic to VMs, and assign a VSI type to
each group.
Each port group contains a group of virtual NICs on
VMs. The network policy configured for the VSI type
applies to all the virtual NICs in the port group.
You can assign the virtual NICs on a VM to different
port groups. After the VM migrates, the network
policies applied to its virtual NICs do not change
unless the virtual NICs are removed from their port
groups.
To configure the HP 5900v virtual switch:
1. Launch the VMware vSphere Client, and then log in to the vCenter.
2. Install the VFE:
# In the VMware vSphere Client navigation bar, select Home > Inventory > Networking.
# Click the 5900v configuration tab, and then click VFE Configuration in the VFE area, as shown
in Figure 30.
