HP FlexFabric Virtual Switch 5900v Installation Guide
3
Preparing for installation
Before you install the virtual switch, do the following:
• Make sure the physical servers and network environment meet the requirements for installing the
virtual switch.
• Complete VMware virtualization environment deployment.
• Complete network policy configurations on the VMware vCenter Server and IMC.
• Prepare information required for VCE installation.
Hardware and software requirements
VCE installation requirements
To install and run a VCE successfully on an ESXi host, verify the following items:
• The ESXi host meets the requirements in Table 2.
• T
he physical resources reserved on the ESXi host meet the requirements in Table 3.

Item
Requirement
Hardware
• CPU—Supports Intel-VT or AMD-V and reserves 8 idle logical cores for the VCE.
• Memory—16 GB (minimum).
• Hard disk—300 GB (minimum).
• NIC—Provides two or more Gigabit (or higher) Ethernet interfaces.
VMware ESXi
version
VMware ESXi 5.0 Enterprise Plus or later. The applicable ESXi version might vary by the HP
5900v version. For more information about the software compatibility, see the HP 5900v
release notes.
NOTE:
•
Intel virtualization technology (Intel-VT) emulates multiple virtual CPUs to run on a single physical CPU, which
allows each virtual CPU to run its own operating system.
• AMD virtualization (AMD-V) divides a host into several virtual machines. Each virtual machine has independen
t
hardware resources and runs its own operating system.
• An ESXi host must provide 8 logical cores for each installed VCE.
