1 Handling drives Drives are fragile computer components that must be handled with care. Refer to the following cautions before handling drives. Additional cautions are included with the procedures to which they apply.
2 Using an optical drive Your computer includes an optical drive that expands the functionality of the computer. Identify what kind of device is installed in your computer to see its capabilities. The optical drive allows you to read data discs, play music, and watch movies. If your computer includes a Blu-ray Disc, also known as BD, drive, then you can also watch high-definition video from disc. Identifying the installed optical drive ▲ To view the drives installed on the computer, select Computer.
Using optical discs An optical drive, such as a DVD-ROM drive, supports optical discs (CDs and DVDs). These discs store information, such as music, photos, and movies. DVDs have a higher storage capacity than CDs. Your optical drive can read standard CD and DVD discs. If your optical drive is a Blu-ray Disc ROM drive, it can also read Blu-ray discs (BDs). NOTE: Some of the optical drives listed may not be supported by your computer. The listed drives are not necessarily all of the supported optical drives.
Selecting the right disc (CDs, DVDs, and BDs) An optical drive supports optical discs (CDs, DVDs, and BDs). CDs, used to store digital data, are also used for commercial audio recordings and are convenient for your personal storage needs. DVDs and BDs are used primarily for movies, software, and data backup purposes. DVDs and BDs are the same form factor as CDs but have a much higher storage capacity.
Blu-ray Discs (BD) BD is a high-density optical disc format for the storage of digital information, including high-definition video. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can store 25 GB, over 5 times the storage capacity of a single-layer DVD at 4.7 GB. A dual-layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost 6 times the storage capacity of a dual-layer DVD at 8.5 GB.
Playing a CD, DVD, or BD 1. Turn on the computer. 2. Press the release button (1) on the drive bezel to release the disc tray. 3. Pull out the tray (2). 4. Hold the disc by the edges to avoid touching the flat surfaces and position the disc label-side up over the tray spindle. NOTE: If the tray is not fully accessible, tilt the disc carefully to position it over the spindle. 5. Gently press the disc (3) down onto the tray spindle until the disc snaps into place. 6. Close the disc tray.
Observing the copyright warning It is a criminal offense, under applicable copyright laws, to make unauthorized copies of copyrightprotected material, including computer programs, films, broadcasts, and sound recordings. Do not use this computer for such purposes. CAUTION: To prevent loss of information or damage to a disc, observe the following guidelines: Before writing to a disc, connect the computer to a reliable external power source.
Copying or creating a CD or DVD 8 1. Select Computer > More Applications, and access Brasero. 2. In the left pane, click Disc copy. 3. Insert the disc you want to copy into the optical drive. 4. Follow on-screen instructions to copy or create a CD or DVD.
Removing a CD, DVD, or BD 1. Press the release button (1) on the drive bezel to release the disc tray, and then gently pull out the tray (2) until it stops. 2. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by gently pressing down on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the disc. Hold the disc by the edges and avoid touching the flat surfaces. NOTE: 3. If the tray is not fully accessible, tilt the disc carefully as you remove it. Close the disc tray and place the disc in a protective case.
The optical disc tray does not open for removal of a CD, DVD, or BD 1. Insert the end of a paper clip (1) into the release access in the front bezel of the drive. 2. Press in gently on the paper clip until the tray is released, and then pull out the tray (2) until it stops. 3. Remove the disc (3) from the tray by gently pressing down on the spindle while lifting the outer edges of the disc. Hold the disc by the edges and avoid touching the flat surfaces.
3 Using external drives Removable external drives expand your options for storing and accessing information. A USB drive can be added by connecting the drive to a USB port on the computer or on an optional docking device (select models only). USB drives include the following types: ● 1.
Using optional external devices NOTE: For more information about required software and drivers, or to learn which computer port to use, refer to the manufacturer's instructions. To connect an external device to the computer: CAUTION: To reduce the risk of damage to the equipment when connecting a powered drive, be sure that the AC power cord is unplugged. 1. Connect the device to the computer. 2. If you are connecting a powered device, plug the device power cord into a grounded AC outlet.
4 Replacing the hard drive CAUTION: To prevent information loss or an unresponsive system: Shut down the computer before removing the hard drive from the hard drive bay. Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in Suspend, or in Hibernation. If you are not sure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on by pressing the power button. Then shut down the computer through the operating system. To remove a hard drive: 1. Save your work. 2.
7. Remove the screws from the battery area. Your computer has either 2 or 3 screws that need to be removed. NOTE: Refer to the illustration that most closely matches your computer.
8. Turn the computer display-side up, and then remove the 2 screws from the back edge of the computer. 9. Open the computer as far as possible. 10. Slide the switch cover straight back towards the display, and then remove the switch cover.
11. Remove the screws from the keyboard. Your computer has either 2 or 3 screws that need to be removed. NOTE: Refer to the illustration that most closely matches your computer. 12. Slide the keyboard (1) towards the display assembly, and then turn the keyboard upside down (2) so that the keyboard cable is accessible. 13. Release the ZIF connector (1) to which the keyboard cable is attached, and then disconnect the keyboard cable (2) from the system board by pulling upward.
14. Remove the keyboard from the computer (3). 15. Remove the screws from the top cover. Your computer has either 2 or 3 screws that need to be removed. NOTE: Refer to the illustration that most closely matches your computer.
16. Slide the top cover back until it disengages from the base enclosure, and then rest the top cover on the computer so that the TouchPad cable is accessible. 17. Release the ZIF connector (1) to which the TouchPad cable is connected, and then disconnect the TouchPad cable from the system board (2) by pulling upward. 18. Remove the top cover (3) from the computer to expose the hard drive and WLAN compartment. 19. Remove the hard drive screw (1). 20.
21. Lift the hard drive (3) out of the hard drive bay. To install a hard drive: 1. Insert the hard drive into the hard drive bay (1). 2. Use the Mylar tab (2) on the hard drive to slide the hard drive to the left to connect it to the system board. 3. Replace the hard drive screw (3) to secure the hard drive to the computer.
20 4. Place the top cover (1) on the computer, and then insert the TouchPad cable (2) into the ZIF connector (3) on the system board. 5. Slide the top cover into place.
6. Replace the screws to the top cover. Your computer has either 2 or 3 screws that need to be installed. NOTE: Refer to the illustration that most closely matches your computer. 7. Place the keyboard upside down on the top cover of the computer (1). 8. Insert the keyboard cable (2) into the ZIF connector (3) on the system board.
