Service Information Messages (SIMs)
The P9500 storage system generates a service information message (SIM) to notify users of events
that have occurred in the storage system. SIMs can be generated by the storage system’s channel
and storage path microprocessors or the service processor (SVP). The SVP reports all SIMs related
to BC Z operations. The SIMs reported to the zSeries and S/390 host are logged in the
SYS1.LOGREC dataset of the host operating system.
SIMs are classified according to the following severities: service, moderate, serious, or acute. The
larger the SIM number, the more important the message.
All SIMs are recorded on the P9500 SVP and displayed in the RWC Status window.
The following figure shows a typical 32 byte SIM from the P9500. SIMs are displayed on the host
console by reference code (RC) and severity. The six digit RC (composed of bytes 22, 23, and
13) identifies the possible error and determines the severity. The SIM type (byte 28) indicates the
component which experienced the error.

Troubleshooting with RAID Manager
This section provides troubleshooting information for operations performed using RAID Manager.
The following describes RAID Manager error codes and instructions for using them. Also, see
“Troubleshooting the At-Time Split” (page 65).
When using RAID Manager, you can identify the cause of an error by referring to either of the
following:
The log displayed in the RAID Manager window.
The error code in the RAID Manager operation log file. The default location for this file is:
/HORCM/log*/curlog/horcmlog_HOST/horcm.log
where * = instance number, and, HOST = host name
