1. If the muffler on your product has a spark arrester
screen, clean it weekly with a steel brush. Replace
the spark arrester screen if it is damaged.
CAUTION: A blocked spark arrester screen
causes the engine to become too hot and
results in damage to the cylinder and piston.
CAUTION: If the spark arrester screen is
frequently blocked, let your service agent
examine the muffler.
To clean the cooling system
The cooling system includes the air intake on the starter
housing (A), the cooling fins on the flywheel (B), the

Clean the cooling system weekly or more frequently if it
is necessary.
1. Remove the starter housing and the cylinder cover.
2. Clean the cooling system with a brush.
Air filter
A dirty air filter can cause carburetor malfunction, start
problems, loss of engine power and wear to engine
parts. It also makes the engine use more fuel than
necessary. Clean the filter at an interval of 8 hours, or
more frequently if the product is operated in a dusty
environment.
Note: An engine adjustment can be necessary when the
air filter has been cleaned or replaced. See
Carburetor
on page 24
.
To examine the paper air filter
1. Remove the air filter cover.
2. Remove the paper air filter and the filter support.
3. Examine and clean the air filter housing with a brush.
4. Examine the paper air filter. Replace the paper air
filter if it is dirty or damaged.
CAUTION: Do not bend of fold the paper air
filter as this can cause damage to the paper
air filter. Replace a damaged paper air filter.
