SAFETY RULES Safe Operation Practices for Walk-Behind Mowers IMPORTANT: THIS CUTTING MACHINE IS CAPABLE OF AMPUTATING HANDS AND FEET AND THROWING OBJECTS. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. • Look for this symbol to point out important safety precautions. It means CAUTION!!! BECOME ALERT!!! YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED.
• • • • • • • Never refuel the machine indoors. Never store the machine or fuel container where there is an open flame, spark or pilot light such as a water heater or on other appliances. Never fill containers inside a vehicle, on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling. Remove gas-powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground.
ASSEMBLY Read these instructions and this manual in its entirety before you attempt to assemble or operate your new lawn mower. IMPORTANT: THIS LAWN MOWER IS SHIPPED WITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE IN THE ENGINE. Your new lawn mower has been assembled at the factory with the exception of those parts left unassembled for shipping purposes. All parts such as nuts, washers, bolts, etc., necessary to complete the assembly have been placed in the parts bag.
OPERATION KNOW YOUR LAWN MOWER READ THIS OWNER'S MANUAL AND SAFETY RULES BEFORE OPERATING YOUR LAWN MOWER. Compare the illustrations with your lawn mower to familiarize yourself with the location of various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference. These symbols may appear on your lawn mower or in literature supplied with the product. Learn and understand their meaning.
OPERATION The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects thrown into the eyes, which can result in severe eye damage. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields while operating your lawn mower or performing any adjustments or repairs. We recommend standard safety glasses or a wide vision safety mask over spectacles. 3. Operate mower to test drive speed. Readjust as required. 4.
OPERATION CASTER WHEEL OPERATION The front wheels can be “locked” into position or set to “freewheel” for better maneuverability. Placing the lockbars in the outer holes of the adjustment brackets “locks” the front wheels. Likewise, placing the lockbars in the inner holes of the adjustment brackets allows the front wheels to spin freely (“freewheel”). • Lift lockbar until the frontmost end clears the adjustment bracket, then pivot lockbar to desired position.
OPERATION SIMPLE STEPS TO REMEMBER WHEN CONVERTING YOUR LAWN MOWER FOR MULCHING 1. Rear mulcher plug installed. 2. Mulcher door closed. FOR REAR BAGGING 1. Rear mulcher plug removed. 2. Grass catcher installed. 3. Mulcher door closed. FOR SIDE DISCHARGING 1. Rear mulcher plug installed. 2. Discharge deflector installed. 1. Open round door of discharge chute to move starter rope out and away from grass catcher. 2. Remove grass catcher with clippings from lawn mower using both front and rear handles. 3.
OPERATION MOWING TIPS ADD GASOLINE (See Fig. 12) • Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck. Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline. Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel freshness. CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher blade attachments on your mower. Such attachments are hazardous, will damage yourmowerandcouldvoidyourwarranty. • CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil or fuel.

MAINTENANCE LAWN MOWER Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced. An unbalanced blade will cause eventual damage to lawn mower or engine. • The blade can be sharpened with a file or on a grinding wheel. Do not attempt to sharpen while on the mower. • To check blade balance, drive a nail into a beam or wall. Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed. Place center hole of blade over the head of the nail. If blade is balanced, it should remain in a horizontal position.
MAINTENANCE 7. Continue adding small amounts of oil and rechecking the dipstick until it reads full. DO NOT overfill, or engine will smoke on startup. 8. Always be sure retighten dipstick before starting engine. 9. Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug. LUBRICATION Use only high quality detergent oil rated with API service classification SG–SL. Select the oil's SAE viscosity grade according to your expected operating temperature. OIL FILL CAP / DIPSTICK NOTE: Multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30 etc.
SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS 3. Remove drive cable from anchor, then detach it and return spring from idler arm assembly (See Fig. 19). CAUTION: TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY, BEFORE PERFORMING ANY SERVICE OR ADJUSTMENTS: 1. Release control bar and stop engine. 2. Make sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped. 3. Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place where it cannot come in contact with plug.
SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS TO ADJUST HANDLE (See Fig. 22) TO REPLACE DRIVE BELT 1. Place new drive belt in the belt retainer of the debris shield. Be sure to route belt between belt keepers and through slot as shown (See Fig. 21). BELT RETAINER The handle on your lawn mower has three (3) height positions - adjust to height that suits you. • Squeeze the bottom ends of lower handle towards each other until the pin in handle can be inserted into one of the three height adjustment holes.
STORAGE Immediately prepare your mower for storage at the end of the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 days or more. LAWN MOWER HANDLE PIN When lawn mower is to be stored for a period of time, clean it thoroughly, remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in a clean, dry area. 1. Clean entire lawn mower (See “CLEANING” in the Maintenance section of this manual). 2. Lubricate as shown in the Maintenance section of this manual. 3.
STORAGE • CYLINDER 1. Remove spark plug. 2. Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through spark plug hole into cylinder. 3. Pull starter handle slowly a few times to distribute oil. 4. Replace with new spark plug. • IMPORTANT: NEVER COVER MOWER WHILE ENGINE AND EXHAUST AREAS ARE STILL WARM. OTHER • • If possible, store your unit indoors and cover it to give protection from dust and dirt. Cover your unit with a suitable protective cover that does not retain moisture. Do not use plastic.
