LUBRICATIONLEVELCHECKFRONTDIFFERENTIALANDREARTRANSAXLE
Thefrontdifferentialisequippedwithtwooilportplugs(1and2)(Figure22).Whenthevehicleisonalevelsurface,
usethelevelindicatorhole(upperplug)(1)asalubricantlevelindicator.Lubricantlevelshouldbeevenwiththe
bottomoflevelindicatorhole(1).
Thereartransaxleisequippedwithallplug/dipstick(1)locatedonthetopofthereartransaxle(Figure24).Whenthe
vehicleisonalevelsurface,usethellplug/dipstick(1)todeterminethelubricantlevel(Figure25)and(Figure26).
LUBRICATIONCHANGEFRONTDIFFERENTIALANDREARTRANSAXLE
Usethelowerplug(2)fordrainage(Figure22)and(Figure23).Removebothplugstoallowthelubricanttodrain
faster.SeeprecedingNOTE.
Metalparticlesmaybediscoveredintheuidoronthemagneticdrainplugwhenchangingthedifferentialor
transmissionuid.Theseparticlesarenormalandexpectedfortherstfewuidchanges.Thisisaresultofthegears
being“netforged,”meaningthegearsareforgedtoashapeveryclosetothenalgearsizebuttheteetharenotnish
machinedpriortoassembly.The“nishmachining”occurswhenthegearsmakecontactunderloadduringvehicle
operation.Themagneticdrainplugisincludedinthedesigntocollectthemetalparticlesgeneratedfromthegear
breakinprocess.Thisisanestablishedprocessandisnotdetrimentaltogearservicelife.
Frontdifferential:
Cleanandinstallthedrainplug(2)andwasherbeforellingthefrontdifferentialwithnewlubricant(Figure22).Tighten
thedrainplugto106in-lb(12N·m).Useafunnelwhenllingthefrontdifferentialthroughthelubricantlevelindicator
hole(1).SeePeriodicLubricationScheduleonpage33.Tightenthelevelindicatorplugto10ft-lb(14N·m).
