Eachgearcasecomponentisequippedwithtwooilportplugs(1and2)(Figure30,Figure31,andFigure32).When
thevehicleisonalevelsurface,usethelevelindicatorhole(upperplug)(1)asalubricantlevelindicator.Lubricant
levelshouldbeevenwiththebottomoflevelindicatorhole(1).
LUBRICATIONCHANGEFORFRONTDIFFERENTIAL,TRANSMISSION,ANDREAR
DIFFERENTIAL
Usethelowerplug(2)fordrainage(Figure30,Figure31,orFigure32).Removebothplugstoallowthelubricantto
drainfaster.SeeprecedingNOTE.
Metalparticlesmaybediscoveredintheuidoronthemagneticdrainplugwhenchangingthedifferentialor
transmissionuid.Theseparticlesarenormalandexpectedfortherstfewuidchanges.Thisisaresultofthegears
being“netforged”,meaningthegearsareforgedtoashapeveryclosetothenalgearsizebuttheteetharenotnish
machinedpriortoassembly.The“nishmachining”occurswhenthegearsmakecontactunderloadduringvehicle
operation.Themagneticdrainplugisincludedinthedesigntocollectthemetalparticlesgeneratedfromthegear
breakinprocess.Thisisanestablishedprocessandisnotdetrimentaltogearservicelife.
Frontdifferential:
Cleanandinstallthedrainplug(2)andwasherbeforellingthefrontdifferentialwithnewlubricant(Figure30).Tighten
thedrainplugto108in-lb(12N·m).Useafunnelwhenllingthefrontdifferentialthroughthelubricantlevelindicator
hole(1).SeePeriodicLubricationScheduleonpage36.Tightenthelevelindicatorplugto120in-lb(14N·m).
