UsingABoosterBattery(JumpStarting)
WARNING
•Ifbatterywireterminalsaredamagedorcorroded,replaceorcleanthemasnecessary.Failuretodo
somaycausethemtooverheatduringoperationandcouldresultinare,propertydamage,or
personalinjury.
Besurethebatteryhold-downclampisproperlytightened.Tightento108in-lb(12.2N·m).Alooseclampmayallow
thebatterytobecomedamagedfromvibrationorjarring.
Ifbatteryappearsweak,haveitchargedbyatrainedtechnician.Thebatteryshouldneverbeleftdischargedany
longerthanabsolutelynecessary(donotleavedischargedovernight).
USINGABOOSTERBATTERY(JUMPSTARTING)
WARNING
•Wearsafetyglassesorapprovedeyeprotectionwhenservicingthevehicle.Wearafullfaceshieldand
rubbergloveswhenworkingonornearbatteries.
•Whenjumpingfromaboosterbatterymakenalconnection(negative)atengineframe.
•Donotjumpstartorchargeafrozenordamagedbattery.Unplugchargerbeforeconnectingor
disconnectingcablestothebattery.Neverleanoverbatterywhileboosting,testing,orcharging.
Ifitisnecessarytouseaboosterbatterytostarttheengine,BECAREFUL!
1.TurnthekeyswitchtotheOFFposition.PlacetheForward/ReversehandleintheNEUTRALposition,engage
theparkbrake,andchockthewheels.
2.Ensuretheboosterbatteryis12-volt.
3.Accesstheenginecompartmentbyraisingthecargobed.SeeWARNING“Forvehicleswithcargobeds...”in
GeneralWarningsonpage8.
4.Locatethevehiclebatteryonthedriver’ssideofthevehicleunderthecargobed(Figure30).
5.Connecttheendoftherstcable(1)tothepositive(+)terminaloftheboosterbattery.Connecttheother
endofthesamecable(2)tothepositiveterminalofthevehiclebattery.SeeDANGER“Battery–Explosive
gases!...”inGeneralWarningsonpage8.
6.Connecttheendofthesecondcable(3)tothenegative(–)terminaloftheboosterbattery.Connecttheotherend
ofthesamecable(4)tothebatteryframeground.
7.Sitinthedriver’sseatandstarttheengine.
8.Aftertheenginehasstarted,removetheframeground(–)cable(4)rst.Removethecablefromthepositive
terminal(2).Thenremovethecablesfromtheboosterbattery.SeefollowingCAUTION.
CAUTION
•Thealternatorcanbedamagedifthefollowingactionsoccur:
–Engineisoperatedwithbatterycablesdisconnected.
–Boostercablesareconnectedwrong.
