Introduction HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL We want to help you get the greatest possible driving pleasure from your vehicle. Your Owner’s Manual can assist you in many ways. We strongly recommend that you read the entire manual. In order to minimize the chance of death or injury, you must read the WARNING and CAUTION sections in the manual. Illustrations complement the words in this manual to best explain how to enjoy your vehicle.
Introduction CAUTION NEVER USE LEADED FUEL. The use of leaded fuel is detrimental to the catalytic converter and will damage the engine control system’s oxygen sensor and affect emission control. Never add any fuel system cleaning agents to the fuel tank other than what has been specified. (We recommend that you consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer for details.) WARNING • Do not "top off" after the nozzle automatically shuts off when refueling.
Introduction Use of MTBE HYUNDAI recommends avoiding fuels containing MTBE (Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) over 15.0% vol. (Oxygen Content 2.7% weight) in your vehicle. Fuel containing MTBE over 15.0% vol. (Oxygen Content 2.7% weight) may reduce vehicle performance and produce vapor lock or hard starting.
Introduction VEHICLE BREAK-IN PROCESS No special break-in period is needed. By following a few simple precautions for the first 1,000 km (600 miles) you may add to the performance, economy and life of your vehicle. • Do not race the engine. • While driving, keep your engine speed (rpm, or revolutions per minute) between 2,000 rpm and 4,000 rpm. • Do not maintain a single speed for long periods of time, either fast or slow. Varying engine speed is needed to properly break-in the engine.

Safety features of your vehicle (Continued) It is essential to replace the entire assembly after it has been worn in a severe impact even if damage to the assembly is not obvious. Belts should not be worn with straps twisted. Each belt assembly must only be used by one occupant; it is dangerous to put a belt around a child being carried on the occupant's lap.
Safety features of your vehicle ✽ NOTICE If you are not able to pull out the seat belt from the retractor, firmly pull the belt out and release it. Then you will be able to pull the belt out smoothly. WARNING The center seat belt latching mechanism is different from those for the rear side seat belts. When fastening the rear side seat belts or the center seat belt, make sure they are inserted into the correct buckles to obtain maximum protection from the seat belt system and assure proper operation.

There will be an audible "click" when the tab locks into the buckle. Check to make sure the belt is properly locked and that the belt is not twisted. When using the rear center seat belt, the buckle with the “CENTER” mark must be used.
Safety features of your vehicle Seat belt precautions WARNING B210A02NF-1 To release the seat belt: When you want to release the seat belt, press the button (1) in the locking buckle. 5 14 All occupants of the vehicle must wear their seat belts at all times. Seat belts and child restraints reduce the risk of serious or fatal injuries for all occupants in the event of a collision or sudden stop.
Safety features of your vehicle ✽ NOTICE Small children are best protected from injury in an accident when properly restrained in the rear seat by a child restraint system that meets the requirements of the Safety Standards of your country. Before buying any child restraint system, make sure that it has a label certifying that it meets Safety Standards of your country. The restraint must be appropriate for your child's height and weight. Check the label on the child restraint for this information.
Safety features of your vehicle Pregnant women The use of a seat belt is recommended for pregnant women to lessen the chance of injury in an accident. When a seat belt is used, the lap belt portion should be placed as low and snugly as possible on the hips, not across the abdomen. For specific recommendations, consult a physician. Injured person A seat belt should be used when an injured person is being transported. When this is necessary, you should consult a physician for recommendations.
Safety features of your vehicle Periodic inspection All seat belts should be inspected periodically for wear or damage of any kind. Any damaged parts should be replaced as soon as possible. Keep belts clean and dry Seat belts should be kept clean and dry. If belts become dirty, they can be cleaned by using a mild soap solution and warm water. Bleach, dye, strong detergents or abrasives should not be used because they may damage and weaken the fabric.
Safety features of your vehicle CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM Children riding in the car should sit in the rear seat and must always be properly restrained to minimize the risk of injury in an accident, sudden stop or sudden maneuver. According to accident statistics, children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seats than in the front seat. Larger children not in a child restraint should use one of the seat belts provided. You should be aware of the specific requirements in your country.
Safety features of your vehicle WARNING To reduce the chance of serious or fatal injuries: • Children of all ages are safer when restrained in the rear seat. A child riding in the front passenger seat can be forcefully struck by an inflating air bag resulting in serious or fatal injuries. • Always follow the child restraint system manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use of the child restraint.
Safety features of your vehicle ■ Rearward-facing child restraint system For safety reasons, we recommend that the child restraint system be used in the rear seats. WARNING CRS09 ■ Forward-facing child restraint system OHA031012 Using a child restraint system For small children and babies, the use of a child seat or infant seat is required. This child seat or infant seat should be of appropriate size for the child and should be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Safety features of your vehicle 3. Route the lap belt through the restraint according to the seat manufacturer’s instructions. 4. Buckle the seat belt and adjust the lap belt for a snug hold on the child restraint by pulling on the loose end of the belt. After installation of the child restraint system, try to move it in all directions to be sure the child restraint system is securely installed.
Safety features of your vehicle If you need to tighten the belt, pull more webbing toward the retractor. When you unbuckle the seat belt and allow it to retract, the retractor will automatically revert back to its normal seated passenger emergency locking usage condition. OEN036101 OEN036104 2. Fasten the lap/shoulder belt latch into the buckle. Listen for the distinct “click” sound. Position the release button so that it is easy to access in case of an emergency. 3.
Safety features of your vehicle AIR BAG - SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (IF EQUIPPED) WARNING Even in vehicles with air bags, you and your passengers must always wear the safety belts provided in order to minimize the risk and severity of injury in the event of a collision or rollover. OHA031014 ① Driver’s front air bag (if equipped) ✽ NOTICE The actual air bags in the vehicle may differ from the illustration.
Safety features of your vehicle It is much more likely that you will simply see the deflated air bag hanging out of the storage compartment after the collision. • In order to help provide protection in a severe collision, the air bag must inflate rapidly. The speed of air bag inflation is a consequence of the extremely short time in which a collision occurs and the need to inflate the air bag between the occupant and the vehicle structures before the occupant impacts those structures.
Safety features of your vehicle SRS components and functions WARNING The SRS consists of the following components: 1. Driver's front air bag module 2. Air bag warning light 3. SRS control module (SRSCM) When the air bag deploys, the air bag related parts in the steering wheel are very hot. To prevent injury, do not touch the air bag storage area’s internal components immediately after an air bag has inflated.
Safety features of your vehicle The SRSCM continually monitors all SRS components while the ignition switch is ON to determine if a crash impact is severe enough to require air bag deployment. The SRS " " warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate for about 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, after which the SRS " " warning light should go out.
Safety features of your vehicle Driver’s front air bag (3) WARNING B240B03L-R A fully inflated air bag, in combination with a properly worn seat belt, slows the driver's forward motion, reducing the risk of head and chest injury. After complete inflation, the air bag immediately starts deflating, enabling the driver to maintain forward visibility and the ability to steer or operate other controls. • If an air bag deploys, there may be a loud noise followed by a fine dust released in the vehicle.
Safety features of your vehicle The purpose of the SRS is to provide the vehicle's driver with additional protection than that offered by the seat belt system alone in case of a frontal impact of sufficient severity. 5 28 WARNING Always use seat belts and child restraints – every trip, every time, everyone! An air bag inflates with considerable force and in the blink of an eye. Seat belts help keep occupants in proper position to obtain maximum benefit from the air bag.
Safety features of your vehicle (Continued) • If the SRS air bag warning light remains illuminated while the vehicle is being driven, have the air bag system checked as soon as possible. We recommend that you have it done by an authorized Hyundai dealer. • Air bags can only be used oncewe recommend that the system be replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer immediately after deployment.
Safety features of your vehicle Why didn’t my air bag go off in a collision? (Inflation and non-inflation conditions of the air bag) There are many types of accidents in which the air bag would not be expected to provide additional protection. These include rear impacts, second or third collisions in multiple impact accidents, as well as low speed impacts. In other words, just because your vehicle is damaged and even if it is totally unusable, do not be surprised that the air bag did not inflate.
Safety features of your vehicle WARNING • Do not hit or allow any objects to impact the locations where an air bag or sensor is installed. This may cause unexpected air bag deployment, which could result in serious personal injury or death. • If the installation location or angle of the sensor is altered in any way, the air bag may deploy when it should not or it may not deploy when they should, causing severe injury or death. Therefore, do not try to perform maintenance on or around the air bag sensor.
Safety features of your vehicle OPA037041 OPA037042 OSA038121 Air bag non-inflation conditions • In certain low-speed collisions the air bag may not deploy. The air bag is designed not to deploy in such cases because they may not provide benefits beyond the protection of the seat belts in such collisions. • The front air bag is not designed to inflate in rear collisions, because occupants are moved backward by the force of the impact.
Safety features of your vehicle 1VQA2089 OPA037043 OED036104 • In an angled collision, the force of impact may direct the occupants in a direction where the air bag would not be able to provide any additional benefit, and thus the sensor may not deploy the air bag. • Just before impact, drivers often brake heavily. Such heavy braking lowers the front portion of the vehicle causing it to “ride” under a vehicle with a higher ground clearance.
Safety features of your vehicle SRS Care The SRS is virtually maintenance-free and so there are no parts you can safely service by yourself. If the SRS " " warning light does not illuminate, or continuously remains on, have your vehicle immediately inspected. We recommend that you have it done by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
Safety features of your vehicle (Continued) • If the air bags inflate, we recommend that the system be replaced by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer. • Do not tamper with or disconnect SRS wiring, or other components of the SRS system. Doing so could result in injury, due to accidental inflation of the air bag or by rendering the SRS inoperative. • If components of the air bag system must be discarded, or if the vehicle must be scrapped, certain safety precautions must be observed.

Driving your vehicle MANUAL TRANSAXLE (IF EQUIPPED) CAUTION OHA051001 Manual transaxle operation The manual transaxle has 5 forward gears. This shift pattern is imprinted on the shift knob. The transaxle is fully synchronized in all forward gears so shifting to either a higher or a lower gear is easily accomplished. Depress the clutch pedal down fully while shifting, then release it slowly. The gearshift lever must return to the neutral position before shifting into R (Reverse).
Driving your vehicle WARNING • Before leaving the driver’s seat, always set the parking brake fully and shut the engine off. Then make sure the transaxle is shifted into 1st (first) gear when the vehicle is parked on a level or uphill grade, and shifted into R (Reverse) on a downhill grade. Unexpected and sudden vehicle movement can occur if these precautions are not followed in the order identified.
Driving your vehicle Good driving practices • Never take the car out of gear and coast down a hill. This is extremely hazardous. Always leave the car in gear. • Do not "ride" the brakes. This can cause them to overheat and malfunction. Instead, when you are driving down a long hill, slow down and shift to a lower gear. When you do this, engine braking will help slow the car. • Slow down before shifting to a lower gear. This will help avoid over-revving the engine, which can cause damage.
Driving your vehicle BRAKE SYSTEM Power brakes Your vehicle has power-assisted brakes that adjust automatically through normal usage. In the event that the power-assisted brakes lose power because of a stalled engine or some other reason, you can still stop your vehicle by applying greater force to the brake pedal than you normally would. The stopping distance, however, will be longer. When the engine is not running, the reserve brake power is partially depleted each time the brake pedal is applied.
Driving your vehicle Disc brakes Your front disc brakes do not have wear indicators. Therefore, have the front disc brakes inspected frequently. Always, inspect the the disc brakes when you change a tyre or when you rotate your tyres Rear drum brakes Your rear drum brakes do not have wear indicators. If the parking brake is not fully engaged, the vehicle may move inadvertently and injure yourself and others. • All vehicles should always have the parking brake fully engaged when parking to avoid inadvertent movement of the car which can injure occupants or pedestrians.
Driving your vehicle ECONOMICAL OPERATION Your vehicle's fuel economy depends mainly on your style of driving, where you drive and when you drive. Each of these factors affects how many kilometers (miles) you can get from a liter (gallon) of fuel. To operate your vehicle as economically as possible, use the following driving suggestions to help save money in both fuel and repairs: • Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate.
Driving your vehicle • Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is operated by engine power so your fuel economy is reduced when you use it. • Open windows at high speeds can reduce fuel economy. • Fuel economy is less in crosswinds and headwinds. To help offset some of this loss, slow down when driving in these conditions. Keeping a vehicle in good operating condition is important both for economy and safety.
Driving your vehicle SPECIAL DRIVING CONDITIONS Hazardous driving conditions Rocking the vehicle When hazardous driving conditions are encountered such as water, snow, ice, mud, sand, or similar hazards, follow these suggestions: • Drive cautiously and allow extra distance for braking. • Avoid sudden braking or steering. • Pump the brake pedal with a light upand-down motion until the vehicle is stopped. • If stalled in snow, mud, or sand, use second gear.
Driving your vehicle OUN056051 OCM053010 Smooth cornering Driving at night Avoid braking or gear changing in corners, especially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners should always be taken under gentle acceleration. If you follow these suggestions, tyre wear will be held to a minimum.
Driving your vehicle 1VQA3003 Driving in the rain Rain and wet roads can make driving dangerous, especially if you’re not prepared for the slick pavement. Here are a few things to consider when driving in the rain: • A heavy rainfall will make it harder to see and will increase the distance needed to stop your vehicle, so slow down. • Keep your windshield wiping equipment in good shape. Replace your windshield wiper blades when they show signs of streaking or missing areas on the windshield.
Driving your vehicle Highway driving Tyres Adjust the tyre inflation pressures to specification. Low tyre inflation pressures will result in overheating and possible failure of the tyres. Avoid using worn or damaged tyres which may result in reduced traction or tyre failure. ✽ NOTICE Never exceed the maximum tyre inflation pressure shown on the tyres.
Driving your vehicle WINTER DRIVING Snowy or icy conditions 1VQA3005 Severe weather conditions of winter result in greater wear and other problems. To minimize the problems of winter driving, you should follow these suggestions: To drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may be necessary to use snow tyres or to install tyre chains on your tyres. If snow tyres are needed, it is necessary to select tyres equivalent in size and type of the original equipment tyres.
Driving your vehicle CAUTION 1VQA3007 Tyre chains Since the sidewalls of radial tyres are thinner, they can be damaged by mounting some types of snow chains on them. Therefore, the use of snow tyres is recommended instead of snow chains. Do not mount tyre chains on vehicles equipped with aluminum wheels; snow chains may cause damage to the wheels. If snow chains must be used, use wire-type chains with a thickness of less than 15 mm (0.59 in).
Driving your vehicle WARNING - Tyre chains • The use of chains may adversely affect vehicle handling. • Do not exceed 30 km/h (20 mph) or the chain manufacturer’s recommended speed limit, whichever is lower. • Drive carefully and avoid bumps, holes, sharp turns, and other road hazards, which may cause the vehicle to bounce. • Avoid sharp turns or lockedwheel braking. CAUTION • Chains that are the wrong size or improperly installed can damage your vehicle's brake lines, suspension, body and wheels.
Driving your vehicle To keep locks from freezing To keep the locks from freezing, squirt an approved de-icer fluid or glycerine into the key opening. If a lock is covered with ice, squirt it with an approved de-icing fluid to remove the ice. If the lock is frozen internally, you may be able to thaw it out by using a heated key. Handle the heated key with care to avoid injury.

Maintenance BATTERY WARNING - Battery dangers Always read the following instructions carefully when handling a battery. Keep lighted cigarettes and all other flames or sparks away from the battery. OHA071011 For best battery service • Keep the battery securely mounted. • Keep the battery top clean and dry. • Keep the terminals and connections clean, tight, and coated with petroleum jelly or terminal grease.
Maintenance (Continued) • The electrical ignition system works with high voltage. Never touch these components with the engine running or the ignition switched on. Failure to follow the above warnings can result in serious bodily injury or death. Battery recharging Your vehicle has a maintenance-free, calcium-based battery.
Maintenance TYRES AND WHEELS Tyre care For proper maintenance, safety, and maximum fuel economy, you must always maintain recommended tyre inflation pressures and stay within the load limits and weight distribution recommended for your vehicle. Recommended cold tyre inflation pressures All tyre pressures (including the spare) should be checked when the tyres are cold. “Cold Tyres” means the vehicle has not been driven for at least three hours or driven less than 1.6 km (one mile).
Maintenance CAUTION • Warm tyres normally exceed recommended cold tyre pressures by 28 to 41 kPa (4 to 6 psi). Do not release air from warm tyres to adjust the pressure or the tyres will be underinflated. • Be sure to reinstall the tyre inflation valve caps. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture could get into the valve core and cause air leakage. If a valve cap is missing, install a new one as soon as possible.
Maintenance Remove the valve cap from the tyre valve stem. Press the tyre gage firmly onto the valve to get a pressure measurement. If the cold tyre inflation pressure matches the recommended pressure on the tyre and loading information label, no further adjustment is necessary. If the pressure is low, add air until you reach the recommended amount. If you overfill the tyre, release air by pushing on the metal stem in the center of the tyre valve. Recheck the tyre pressure with the tyre gage.
Maintenance Disc brake pads should be inspected for wear whenever tyres are rotated. With a full-size spare tyre ✽ NOTICE Rotate radial tyres that have an asymmetric tread pattern only from front to rear and not from right to left. CBGQ0706 Without a spare tyre WARNING Do not mix bias ply and radial ply tyres under any circumstances. This may cause unusual handling characteristics that could result in death, severe injury, or property damage.
Maintenance WARNING - Replacing Tread wear indicator tyres OEN076053 Tyre replacement If the tyre is worn evenly, a tread wear indicator will appear as a solid band across the tread. This shows there is less than 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) of tread left on the tyre. Replace the tyre when this happens. Do not wait for the band to appear across the entire tread before replacing the tyre.
Maintenance Wheel replacement When replacing the metal wheels for any reason, make sure the new wheels are equivalent to the original factory units in diameter, rim width and offset. WARNING A wheel that is not the correct size may adversely affect wheel and bearing life, braking and stopping abilities, handling characteristics, ground clearance, body-to-tyre clearance, snow chain clearance, speedometer and odometer calibration, headlight aim and bumper height.
Maintenance 2. Tyre size designation A tyre’s sidewall is marked with a tyre size designation. You will need this information when selecting replacement tyres for your car. The following explains what the letters and numbers in the tyre size designation mean. Example tyre size designation: (These numbers are provided as an example only; your tyre size designator could vary depending on your vehicle.) 155/70R13 75S 155 - Tyre width in millimeters. 70 - Aspect ratio.
Maintenance 3. Checking tyre life (TIN : Tyre Identification Number) Any tyres that are over 6 years old, based on the manufacturing date, (including the spare tyre) should be replaced by new ones. You can find the manufacturing date on the tyre sidewall (possibly on the inside of the wheel), displaying the DOT Code. The DOT Code is a series of numbers on a tyre consisting of numbers and English letters. The manufacturing date is designated by the last four digits (characters) of the DOT code.
Maintenance 6. Maximum load rating This number indicates the maximum load in kilograms and pounds that can be carried by the tyre. When replacing the tyres on the vehicle, always use a tyre that has the same load rating as the factory installed tyre. 7. Uniform tyre quality grading Quality grades can be found where applicable on the tyre sidewall between tread shoulder and maximum section width.
Maintenance Temperature -A, B & C The temperature grades are A (the highest), B, and C, representing the tyre’s resistance to the generation of heat and its ability to dissipate heat when tested under controlled conditions on a specified indoor laboratory test wheel. Sustained high temperature can cause the material of the tyre to degenerate and reduce tyre life, and excessive temperature can lead to sudden tyre failure.
