Settingahot-sparedrive
Thistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtosetaphysicaldriveasahot-sparedriveusingtheLSISoftware
RAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.
Ahot-sparedriveisanextra,unuseddrivethatispartofthedisksubsystem.Itisusuallyinstandby
modeandreadyforserviceifadrivefails.Settinghot-sparedrivesenablesyoutoreplacefailingdrives
withoutperformingasystemshutdownoperation.Foradetailedintroductiontohot-sparedrives,referto
“IntroductiontoRAID”intheMegaRAIDSASSoftwareUserGuideonthedocumentationDVDthatcomes
withyourserver.
Tosetaphysicaldriveasahot-sparedriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram,
dothefollowing:
1.StarttheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.See“StartingtheLSISoftwareRAID
CongurationUtilityprogram”onpage75.
2.Dooneofthefollowing:
•IfyouwanttocreateoraddanewRAIDarray,youcansetahot-sparedriveduringtheconguration
processbyfollowingtheinstructionsonthescreen.
•Ifyouwanttosetahot-sparedriverightaftertheconguration,selectObjects➙PhysicalDrive
fromtheprogrammaininterface.Then,selectthephysicaldrivethatyouwanttosetasahot-spare
driveandpressEnter.Asubmenuisdisplayed.SelectMakeHotSparefromthesubmenuandthen
selectYeswhenpromptedtosetthephysicaldriveasahot-sparedrive.
Rebuildingaphysicaldrive
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtorebuildaphysicaldriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDConguration
Utilityprogramwhenaphysicaldriveinanarrayfails.
WhenadriveinaRAIDdrivegroupfails,youcanrebuildthedrivebyrecreatingthedatathatwasstoredon
thedrivebeforeitfails.Ifthedriveisnotoperational,itmustbereplacedandthedataonthefailingdrive
mustberebuiltonanewdrivetorestorethesystemtofaulttolerance.Ifhot-sparedrivesareavailable,the
failingdrivemightberebuiltautomaticallywithoutanyuserintervention.
TheRAIDcontrollerrecreatesthedatausingthedatastoredonotherdrivesinthedrivegroup.Rebuilding
canbedoneonlyindrivegroupswithdataredundancy,suchasRAID1,5,and10drivegroups.Fora

GuideonthedocumentationDVDthatcomeswithyourserver.
TorebuildaphysicaldriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogramwhenaphysical
driveinanarrayfails,dothefollowing:
1.StarttheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.See“StartingtheLSISoftwareRAID
CongurationUtilityprogram”onpage75.
2.Onthemaininterfaceoftheprogram,selectRebuildandfollowtheinstructionsonthescreen.
Note:Runningaconsistencycheckimmediatelyaftertherebuildcompletestoensuredataintegrityforthe
virtualdrives.See“Runningaconsistencycheck”onpage79.
Therebuildrateisthepercentageofthecomputingcyclesdedicatedtorebuildingfailingdrives.Arebuild
rateof100percentmeansthatthesystemgivesprioritytorebuildingthefailingdrives.Therebuildratecan
