•Makesurethatyouhaveanadequatenumberofproperlygroundedelectricaloutletsfortheserver,
monitor,andotherdevices.
•Backupallimportantdatabeforeyoumakechangestodrives.
•Haveasmallat-bladescrewdriveravailable.
•Youdonothavetoturnofftheservertoinstallorreplaceahot-swapredundantpowersupplymodule,
hot-swapharddiskdrives,orhot-plugUSBdevices.However,youmustturnofftheserverbefore
performinganystepsthatinvolveinstalling,removing,orreplacingadaptercablesornon-hot-swap
devicesorcomponents.
•ToviewtheLEDsonthesystemboardandinternalcomponents,leavetheserverconnectedtopower.
•Whenyouarenishedworkingontheserver,reinstallallsafetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.
•Whenworkinginsidetheserver,youmightndsometaskseasierifyoulaytheserveronitsside.
Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices
Attention:Donotopenthestatic-protectivepackagethatcontainsthenewpartuntilthedefectiveparthasbeen
removedfromtheserverandyouarereadytoinstallthenewpart.Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,
canseriouslydamageservercomponentsandparts.
Whenyouhandleserverpartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Theuseofagroundingsystemisrecommended.Forexample,wearanelectrostaticdischarge(ESD)
wriststrap,ifoneisavailable.MakesurethatyouworkinanESD-safearea.
•Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomponents(suchasPCIcards,memorymodules,system
boards,andmicroprocessors)byitsedgesoritsframe.Donottouchsolderjoints,pins,orexposed
circuitry.
•Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleanddamageit.
•Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoan
unpaintedmetalpartoftheserverforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfromthe
packageandyourbody.
•Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitintheserverwithout
placingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecicsituation,placethe
static-protectivepackageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewparton
thestatic-protectivepackage.
•Donotplacethepartontheservercoverorothermetalsurface.
•Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.
Systemreliabilityguidelines
Tohelpensurepropercoolingandsystemreliability,makesurethatyoufollowtheseguidelines:
•Eachofthedrivebayshasadriveoradummytrayinstalled;orthereisanelectromagneticinterface(EMI)
protectivepanelorEMIshieldinstalledtoprotectthedrivecage.
•Iftheserverhasredundantpower,eachofthepowersupplymodulebayhasaredundantpowersupply
moduleinstalled,oronebayhasamodulewhiletheotherbayiscoveredbyashield.
•Leaveadequatespacearoundtheservertomakesurethattheservercoolingsystemworkswell.Leave
approximately50mm(2inches)ofopenspacearoundthefrontandrearoftheserver.Donotplace
objectsinfrontofthefans.Forpropercoolingandairow,installtheservercoverbeforeyouturnon
theserver.Operatingtheserverforextendedperiodsoftime(morethan30minutes)withtheserver
coverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.
