Understand and follow operating instructions carefully. If this tester is not used in a manner
specified by IDEAL, protection provided by the product may be impaired.
WARNING
To avoid possible electric shock, personal injury or death, follow these instructions:
• Donotuseiftesterappearsdamaged.Visuallyinspectthetestertoensurecaseisnot
cracked and back case is securely in place.
• Inspectandreplaceleadsifinsulationisdamaged,metalisexposed,orprobesare
cracked. Pay particular attention to the insulation surrounding the connectors.
• Ashockhazardexistsduringnormaltestingasavoltageispresentacrossthemeasuring
terminals.
• Donotusetesterifitoperatesabnormallyasprotectionmaybeimpaired.
• Donotuseduringelectricalstormsorinwetweather.
• Donotusearoundexplosivegas,dust,orvapor.
• Donotusetesteronenergizedcircuits.
• Donotusewithoutthebatteryandthebackcaseproperlyinstalled.
• Replacebatteryassoonasthelowbatteryindicator“”appearstoavoidfalse
readings.
• Removethetestleadsfromunitpriortoremovingbatterycap.
• Usetheproperterminals,functionandrangeforyourmeasurements.
• Donotattempttorepairthisunitasithasnouser-serviceableparts.
• Complywithlocalandnationalsafetyrequirements,includingtheuseofappropriate
personalprotectiveequipment.
CAUTION

• Voltagesexceeding30VACor60VDCposeashockhazardsousecaution.
• Useappropriatepersonalprotectiveequipmentsuchassafetyglasses,faceshields,
insulating gloves, insulating boots, and/or insulating mats.
• Nevergroundyourselfwhentakingelectricalmeasurements.
• Alwaysworkwithapartner.
• Whenusingtheprobes,keepngersasfarbehindtheprobetipsaspossible.
Operating Instructions
• Beforeproceedingwith
measurement, if the

batteries.
• Shortthetipsoftheleads.
Adjust the 0Ω. ADJ control to
setthereadingtozero.
• Rotatethefunctionswitchtothe“EARTHVOLTAGE”positionandpresstotest.Earthvolt-
agewillbedisplayedontheLCD.Ifearthvoltageismorethan10V,aninaccuratereading
may be obtained.
• Precisionearthresistancemeasurementmethod:
(1) Connectthegreen,yellowandredtestleadstoinstrumentterminalsE,PandCwith
auxiliaryearthspikesP1,C1placedintothesoil“INASTRAIGHTLINE”.(Fig.1)
(2) Rotatethefunctionswitchtoasuitablerangethenpressthepushbuttontotestand
take the reading.
• Simpliedearthresistancemeasurementmethod
(1) Thismethodisrecommendedwhereanearthresistancehigherthan10Ω is
measuredorwhereitisnotpossibletodriveauxiliaryearthspikes.Anapproximate
valueofearthresistancecanbeobtainedbythetwowiresystemshowninFig.2.
(2) Rotatethefunctionswitchto“EARTHVOLTAGE”positionandpresstotest.Make
certainthatearthvoltageislessthan10V.
(3) Firstrotatethefunctionswitchtothe“200Ω“positionandpresstotest.Readearth
resistance.Ifthedisplayshows“1”(MSD),switchtothe“2KΩ“positionandread
earth resistance.
(4) Thereadingobtained(Rx)isan
approximateearthresistance
value. There is no need for
externalshortingasPandC
terminals are shorted by
using the test leads
specified for the simplified
measurement.
