Note: System protection must be turned on for the system drive (typically drive C) of your
computer before you can create restore points. Select a drive and then select Configure to turn on
or disable system protection.
Reset your computer
If your computer is not working well and you are not sure why, you may reset it.
Step 1. Open the Start menu.
Step 2. Click Settings ➙ Update & Security ➙ Recovery; and then select Get started under Reset this
PC.
Step 3. Choose an option.
If you want to keep personal files, select Keep my files.
Otherwise, select Remove everything.
Note: If you are planning to donate, recycle, or sell your computer, use this option and choose to
fully clean the drive. This might take an hour or longer, but it makes it harder for other people to
recover your personal files.
Use a recovery drive to restore or reset your computer
For computers without a USB Type A connector, you need to purchase an adapter (USB Type C to Type A)
to create and use a recovery drive.
Even if Windows cannot start, you can use a recovery drive (created in advance) to restore or reset your
computer.
Step 1. Connect the recovery drive to your computer; restart your computer and set it up to start from the
recovery drive.
Step 2. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot.
Step 3. Choose a recovery option.
Select Advanced Options ➙ System Restore to restore your computer to a system restore point.
Or select Recover from a drive to reset your computer.
Note: If you did not select the Back up system files to the recovery drive option when creating
the recovery drive, Recovery from a drive is not available.
Attention: All personal files created on your computer will be deleted after recovering from the
drive.
Create a recovery drive
Use a USB drive (not supplied) to create a recovery drive. In cases Windows cannot start, it can be used to
troubleshoot problems or reset computer.
Step 1. In Windows 10 search box, type Create a recovery drive and then select the matched result.
Note: The search box is located in the lower left corner of the desktop, next to the Start button.
Step 2. Make sure Back up system files to the recovery drive is selected and then select Next.
Step 3. Connect a USB drive to your computer, select it, and then select Next ➙ Create.
