COOL-ERTM A contemporary ereader designed for users who value straightforward functionality with an eye-catching finish. Your COOL-ER is a light and stylish electronic book reader with over 750,000 titles available to download from the CoolerBOOKS website. With a display capable of mimicking paper thanks to E-InkR from Vizplex, each COOL-ER replicates the experience of reading a paper book.

Using the controls A. Power switch This switch is used to switch your COOL-ER on and off. This is disabled when your COOL-ER is connected to your computer via the USB cable. B. Memory card slot You can load an SD memory card here, to hold additional edocuments and audio files. C. Multi-media button This button gives access to your COOL-ER’s audio player and puzzles.
Getting Started Before you start to use your COOL-ER it is recommended that you charge the battery by connecting it to your computer using the USB cable provided for at least 3 hours. Whenever your COOL-ER is connected to your computer the LED light will glow red to indicate your COOL-ER is charging. While it’s charging you will be unable to use it to read your edocuments. When the battery is completely charged the full battery icon will show in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
For ease of navigating… You might prefer to change the display to ‘List’ view. To do this; ! Press the menus key (F) and the library setting menu will be shown. ! Select ‘View’ by using the navigation arrows and press the central button to bring up the ‘View’ menu. ! Use the up and down arrows to move the black square until it is beside ‘List’. ! Press the central button to select your option. The display will return to the library screen in List view.
Free Ebooks To get you started, we have pre-loaded your COOLER with some classic literature. To find the free ebooks, turn your COOL-ER on and scroll through the 4 folders displayed in the Library to ‘Free Ebooks’. Click the central button of the control wheel to select this folder. The folder will open to reveal a small library for you to enjoy. You can start reading by scrolling to any book and clicking the central button of the control wheel.
Downloading files Your COOL-ER can read files that are in a supported format either directly from its own memory or from a memory card. To load files into your COOL-ER’s memory; ! Connect your COOL-ER to your computer using your USB cable supplied. ! The file structure on your COOL-ER will show in a new window called COOLER on your computer. ! Move any files as required into the folders on the COOLER window. You can purchase books to read on your COOLER from our CoolerBOOKS website.
Reading books Selecting a book Page format From your COOL-ER library screen, highlight the folder your book is held in by pressing the up and down arrows on the control wheel then open the folder by pressing the central button. Orientation Pages can be seen in landscape or portrait mode. It is easy to change from one to the other by pressing the Portrait/Landscape button (D). This will show a list of books within the folder. Books shown can be sorted by various criteria.
Starting to read Selecting the start page By default your ebook will open at the last page you had open. You can select a different page to start from as follows: By page number By chapter After opening the book file, bring up the ereading menu by pressing the menu button (F) or the central scroll wheel button. After opening the book file, bring up the ereading menu by pressing the menu button (F).
Listening to music Selecting a track From the library screen, highlight the folder your music is held in by pressing the up and down arrows on the control wheel then open the folder by pressing the central button. This will show a list of music tracks within the folder. Tracks shown can be sorted by various criteria. Highlight the music you wish to listen to using the selection arrows.
Switching off Your COOL-ER will automatically power off after 10 minutes of no activity. You can change this to 15 or 20 minutes or disable the automatic power off if you wish to keep the current page open for longer by using the Library Setting menu. From the Library screen, bring up the menu by pressing the menu button (F). The ‘Library Setting’ menu will be displayed. Select ‘Auto power off’ From the ‘Auto power off’ menu select disable or the length of time you require from the options available.
COOL-ER menu options Library menus Sort The Library setting menu, which is accessible from the Library page (button F), has options as shown. The Sort menu has options to sort the files in your COOL-ER in either ascending or descending order by the following criteria ! By date ! By filename Both books and folders are shown in filename order if this option is selected. Upper case is considered to be secondary to lower case. ! By category ! By file size Sorts by file size.
View The View menu specifies the format in which the details of your ebooks are displayed. The following options are available. ! List Shows the files in a list with a highlight column on the left hand side that makes it easy to select a specific file. ! Book cover options If this option is selected it supersedes the List option, and the left hand selection column is not displayed.
Language Menu Language The Language menu allows you to choose a language for your COOL-ER menus. Please select the menu button or click the central control wheel button whilst in the library view and scroll down to Language. If you find you have accidentally selected a language you can return to English by selecting the 3rd option down on the ‘Library Setting’ menu and then selecting the top option.
Auto power off The auto power off menu allows you to select the length of time your COOL-ER will remain on with no button clicks before automatically switching off. Available options are 10, 15 or 20 minutes. This menu also gives you the option of disabling auto power off so that your COOL-ER will never switch off automatically. Please note that, because only button clicks use power, leaving your COOL-ER switched on when not in use uses only a minute amount of power.
Firmware updates Occasionally we will offer you the option to upgrade your COOL-ER software if you wish. This is called a firmware upgrade. Preparation Download COOL-ER firmware upgrade from the CoolReaders site Load unzipped firmware files onto an empty SD Card. SD Firmware update 1. Connect your COOL-ER to a computer via your USB cable for uninterrupted power during upgrade. 2. Insert firmware loaded SD card into slot on top edge of device.
E reading menu To access this menu please open a book and press the central control wheel button or button F. This menu enables you to change the appearance of the page to suit your preferences, to set up and move bookmarks and to navigate through your ebook. Options can be seen on the right. Bookmark The Bookmark menu enables you to manage your bookmarks with the following options. Add bookmark Selecting this option sets a bookmark on the page currently open.
Back The back button edocument. returns you to your Go To Page The Go To Page menu enables you to navigate to any selected page within the ebook. While your COOL-ER is finding the selected page the green light in the top right hand corner will flash. First Page To start reading from the beginning select ‘First Page’ Last Page To go to the end of the book select ‘Last Page’ Page To specify the page to start at, select ‘Page’ ‘Go to page’ submenu will be displayed.
Start Reading This option will return you to the last selected page of your ebook. Table of contents If the ebook has a Table of Contents, the ‘Table of Contents’ menu enables you to select the chapter to navigate to. As with a paper book, some ebooks have no Table of Contents and in this case your COOL-ER will return you to the ebook. Click on the book title – a list of chapters will be shown, 10 chapters per page. Navigate to the required chapter.
Font Options The Font Options menu enables you to change the appearance of your edocument for ease of reading. Having selected an edocument, click the central button of the control wheel to bring up the E Reading Menu. From here scroll down to Font Family and click the central button again. This will bring up the font options allowing you to select your preferred size and style. Change the font size and style to suit you While your COOL-ER is reformatting your edocument you may notice the LED flashing.
Font Size COOL-ER font size indicator: (For illustrative purposes only) 8 sizes of font are available for you to select. Please choose a size to suit you. Edocuments produced by different publishers may display differently and you may need to change your settings to display some files at your favorite size. Please note that not all books are formatted to wrap lines correctly in all sizes of font. ! If your ebook appears to be missing the ends of lines, please select a smaller font.
Status Options The Status Options menu enables you to change the presentation of the ebook you are reading. Status Bar The status bar is shown at the bottom of every page of the ebook giving status information as follows from left to right: Remaining battery charge Shows the amount of charge in the battery. A fully charged battery will show filled with vertical black stripes. As the battery becomes discharged the number of stripes will reduce.
Rotate Screen When this option is selected the screen is rotated anticlockwise through 90º. If this option is selected a second time the screen will be rotated back to its original position. This can also be achieved by pressing the portrait/landscape button (D) on the side of your COOL-ER.! Left Alignment This option allows you to align the pages to the left. Multi-media menu Music Music on This option switches audio files on. You can listen to music while you are reading a book. As long as Music On is selected the music will continue to play while you select and read ebooks or solve a Sudoku puzzle. Music off Sudoku Sudoku Rules Complete the grid with the digits 1 to 9. Each digit can appear only once in each row, each column and each 3 X 3 square. The ‘New Game’ menu gives you various options about the game. This option switches audio files off.
Using CoolerBOOKS From the CoolerBOOKS website, select a book you wish to purchase and click on View Details. A preview of the book will be shown. Click on ‘Add to Basket’. If you wish to buy another book click on ‘Continue shopping’. You can buy several books at once by repeating the previous 2 steps until you have finished selecting books to buy. Once you have selected all the books you want to buy, click on ‘Checkout now’. The checkout screen will appear.
For help contact support@ coolerbooks.com When payment is complete you will be returned to your CoolerBOOKS account screen, showing your details and the books you have purchased under My Ebook Orders. These details include an ACSM (Adobe Content Server Message) file for your book. To complete the download of your book and load it onto your COOL-ER as an ebook, you must use the ACSM file for this book to activate the download of the DRM file from CoolerBOOKS. Click on the Download number.
ADE - Adobe Digital Editions Most of the ebooks on CoolerBOOKS are supplied in the Adobe Digital Editions [ADE] format. We believe ADE to be one of the better ebook formats allowing you to manage, retain, share and easily download your ebooks. ADE Installation Rather like iTunes you will need to download the ADE software onto your computer, this software is available for Windows and Mac computers. ! If you do not have one already, you will need an Adobe ID, which is obtained by registering with Adobe www.
Frequently Asked Questions I need to know about compatibility… Which Operating Systems are compatible with my COOL-ER? COOL-ER supports both Apple Macintosh and Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. At present COOL-ER does not support file transfer from Linux based computers. How easy is it to use COOL-ER with my desktop or laptop? COOL-ER is plug and play compatible.
Tell me how to use my COOL-ER… Is navigation simple? How easy is it to turn a page? The straightforward navigation system is designed for intuitive use with clear-cut click through menus to make the COOL-ER suitable for even the most technophobic! For page turns, COOL-ER has a simple control wheel in the bottom right corner (portrait mode), which allows you to progress through your document either forward or back with a single click.
How can I charge my COOL-ER? Connect your COOL-ER to a computer via the USB cable and your COOL-ER will immediately begin to charge while the computer is powered on. Your COOL-ER will charge each time it is connected for file transfers and even charge while transferring documents. Your COOL-ER will be shipped with a slight charge but to charge it completely from fully empty takes a couple of hours. A full charge should last for about 8000 button clicks.
Tell me about formats… What types of documents can I read on my COOL-ER? Will my COOL-ER re-flow formatted text? We're keen to make COOL-ER as user friendly as possible, which is why users can load their own documents, as well as any purchased files that they have the right to view. COOL-ER is suitable for use with many file formats and with ebooks purchased from most ebookstores as well as Project Gutenburg files saved in a compatible format.

How many books can my COOL-ER hold? COOL-ER provides 1 gigabyte of storage and it includes a Secure-Digital (SD) card slot for expandable, removable storage. As with music, the number of books you can hold will depend on the type and size of book you download, but to give you an example, an average fiction bestseller is around 3MB. This means you can hold over 300 books on your COOL-ER and thousands more using an additional memory card and COOL-ER’s Secure Digital (SD) card slot.

Troubleshooting My screen has frozen what should I do? Your battery has probably run down. Try connecting your COOL-ER to your computer to recharge the battery. My page won’t turn – what can I do? Due to the E Ink screen technology, your COOL-ER will continue showing the last page you accessed even if the battery has run down. Simply recharge the battery by plugging your COOL-ER into your computer via the USB cable.

Software for users to view and manage eBooks and other digital publications. COOL-ER - Ereader from Interead. Linux - An independent operating system based on Open Source code. Types of Linux operating system include Ubuntu, Red Hat and SUSE. Although the COOL-ER runs on a Linux platform, it is not suitable for file transfer of documents from a Linux computer (for now). Mobipocket - Amazon owned ebook file type. Compatible only with Amazon ereaders: Kindle 1, Kindle 2 and Kindle DX. MP3 - Audio Layer 3. A common audio format for consumer audio storage as it provides good quality playback with small file size.
