Theeffectofrisetimedistortiontothegascurvebecomesapparentwhenthebreathingrate
increasessothat thetimeforafullinspiratoryorexpiratoryeventgetsshorter.Inthose
situations,duetotheeffectoftherisetime, thegascurvedoesnotreachthetrueend‐tidal
(or
firstinspiredvalue)andtheend‐tidalgasvaluemaythenbeunderestimated.Correspondingly,
thefirst inspiredvaluemaybeoverestimated.Belowisanexaggeratedillustrationoftheeffect.
