GridVis® software - device configuration
Basic settings
1. Right-click to open the context menu for your
device:
- In the "Projects" > "Your project“ > "Devic-
es" > "By device type" > "UMG 96-PA" >
"Device x" window.
2. Click the "Configuration" menu item in the
context menu.
3. The "Configuration [Device x]” window is
displayed in the righthalf of the work area.
4. Enter your individual device name in the
„Name“ input field in the "Identity" menu in the
"Configuration" window.
5. Enter the voltage and current ratios in the input
fields in the "Transformer" menu in the "Config-
uration" window.

This quick guide to our GridVis
®
software is a
supplement to the user manual and installation
instructions for the UMG 96-PA and the UMG 96-
PQ series of devices. The following steps describe
the most common connections for communication
between PC and device.
Please first read and understand the product-relat-
ed usage information and especially the safety-rel-
evant information they contain.

Establish the connection to the PC
The most common connections for communica-
tion between the PC and the device:

6. In the "Connection type" selection list, select
"TCP/IP" and enter the IP address for your
device in the "Host" field.The IP address
of your UMG 604 is determined via the
parameter addresses 300 to 303 in program-
ming mode (see user manual and installation
instructions for the UMG 604).
7. Click "Connection test”.
8. If the connection test is successful, the
"Display device information" window appears
with the serial number, hardware version and
firmware version.
Integrate the UMG 96-PA or the device of the PQ
series into the project:
1. Click in the project window on the plus symbol
in front of the "Devices" directory.
2. Click on the plus symbol in front of the
"By device type" subdirectory in the "Devices"
directory.
3. The UMG 604 that was installed previously is
displayed.
4. Right-click with the mouse on the "By device
type" subdirectory.
5. Select the "New" menu item in the context
menu.
6. Click on the "Other" menu item in the sub-
menu.
9. Click "Next".
10. The "Configure connection" step is displayed
in the window.
11. Important settings in "Configure connection":
- In the selection list, select the "Ethernet gate-
way (e.g. for devices on the RS485)" connec-
tion type.
- Enter the IP address of your UMG 604 in the
"Address" input field (read out parameter
addresses 300 to 303 on the device).
- In the "Device address" selection field, select
the device address of your UMG 96-PA or
your UMG 96 of the PQ series (see user man-
ual and installation instructions for the device).
12. Click "Connection test”.
13. If the connection test is successful, the
"Display device information" window appears
with the serial number, hardware version and
firmware version.
14. Click "OK".
15. Complete the "Insert new device into the proj-
ect" step by clicking "Finish".
In “Recording configuration”, you can check and
configure which recordings the measurement
device should save if required.
A record holds a measured value or the mean
value of the measured value.

UMG 96-PA and UMG PQ series – PC connection via UMG 604 as a gateway
The PC connection of the device via the UMG 604
as gateway is the most common connection
between PC and device:
1. Configure your UMG 604 via Ethernet cable
on your PC in the network with DHCP server
as “DHCP Client” (IP address assigned au-
tomatically), without DHCP server as “Fixed
IP address” (see user manual and installation
instructions for the UMG 604).
2. Connect your device with the UMG 604 via
the RS485 interface (see installation instruc-
tions).
GridVis® software
Install the GridVis® software on your computer
and proceed as follows:
1. Open the GridVis® software on your PC.
2. In the menu bar, select “File” >
“New project”. If the project already exists,
open it by selecting “File” >
"Open project“.
3. The "New project" window is displayed.
4. In step 1, "Select project", click "Continue".
5. In step 2, "Project path", select the:
- “Project name”.
- “Project path”.
Insert UMG 604 in the project:
1. In the menu bar, select "File" > "New file".
2. The "New file" window is displayed.
3. In step 1, "Select file type", select the "File type"
(UMG 604) in the "DIN Rail" category.
4. Click "Next".
5. The "Configure connection"
step is displayed in the window.
6. Click "Finish".
7. Your project is displayed on the left in the "Proj-
ects" window in the work area.
ATTENTION
Indicates hazardous situations, that could lead to
property damage due to data loss or faults in the
IT network for example.
INFORMATION
Indicates procedures in which there is no hazard
of personal injury or material damage.
ATTENTION
Incorrect network settings can cause malfunctions
in the IT network and thus material damage!
Obtain information from your network admin-
istrator about the correct Ethernet network
settings for your device.
As an option to these connection possibilities, an
expansion module for the UMG 96-PA and the
UMG 96-PQ series offers an Ethernet interface
for communication. Information on the Expansion
module with Ethernet interface can be found in
the usage information on the module.

INFORMATION
The device with RCM-EL module has an Ether-
net interface and an RS-485 interface (fieldbus)
for communication which can be configured in the
Communication window.
When the PC is connected via Ethernet, the
device with module RCM-EL may be used as a
gateway (master).

9. Click "OK".
10. Complete the "Insert new device into the proj-
ect" step by clicking "Finish".
6. Select the nominal frequency under the
"Nominal values" menu in the "Configuration"
window, in accordance with the existing grid
conditions.
INFORMATION
To avoid data loss, save your changes to the
device configuration by pressing "Transfer" or
"Transfer to"!

For the PC connection (GridVis software) and thus
for configuration and readout of a Device with
module, make use of the following options:
Via the RS-485 interface of the device (ap-
plies to devices with RCM or RCM-EL mod-
ule) – see the previous step for a description.
Via the Ethernet interface of the module (only
applies to a device with RCM-EL module).

Supplement to user manual and to installation instructions
For the PC connection (GridVis software) and thus
for configuration and readout of a Device with
module, make use of the following options:
Via the RS-485 interface of the device (ap-
plies to devices with RCM or RCM-EL mod-
ule) – see the previous step for a description.
Via the Ethernet interface of the module (only
applies to a device with RCM-EL module).
Connection for communication between PC and
device with module RCM-EL:
The following figure shows the back of the de-
vice with the RCM-EL module attached:
INFORMATION
The PC connection for devices with a module
applies equally to the UMG 96-PA and to devices
of the UMG 96-PQ series!
Please pay particular attention to the additional
usage information for the respective devices!
7. The "New file" window is displayed.
8. In the category "UMG 96 Series", select the
"File types" UMG 96-PA (or your UMG 96
from the PQ series).

GridVis® software - device configuration
Basic settings
1. Right-click to open the context menu for your
device:
- In the "Projects" > "Your project“ > "Devic-
es" > "By device type" > "UMG 96-PA" >
"Device x" window.
2. Click the "Configuration" menu item in the
context menu.
3. The "Configuration [Device x]” window is
displayed in the righthalf of the work area.
4. Enter your individual device name in the
„Name“ input field in the "Identity" menu in the
"Configuration" window.
5. Enter the voltage and current ratios in the input
fields in the "Transformer" menu in the "Config-
uration" window.

This quick guide to our GridVis
®
software is a
supplement to the user manual and installation
instructions for the UMG 96-PA and the UMG 96-
PQ series of devices. The following steps describe
the most common connections for communication
between PC and device.
Please first read and understand the product-relat-
ed usage information and especially the safety-rel-
evant information they contain.

Establish the connection to the PC
The most common connections for communica-
tion between the PC and the device:

6. In the "Connection type" selection list, select
"TCP/IP" and enter the IP address for your
device in the "Host" field.The IP address
of your UMG 604 is determined via the
parameter addresses 300 to 303 in program-
ming mode (see user manual and installation
instructions for the UMG 604).
7. Click "Connection test”.
8. If the connection test is successful, the
"Display device information" window appears
with the serial number, hardware version and
firmware version.
Integrate the UMG 96-PA or the device of the PQ
series into the project:
1. Click in the project window on the plus symbol
in front of the "Devices" directory.
2. Click on the plus symbol in front of the
"By device type" subdirectory in the "Devices"
directory.
3. The UMG 604 that was installed previously is
displayed.
4. Right-click with the mouse on the "By device
type" subdirectory.
5. Select the "New" menu item in the context
menu.
6. Click on the "Other" menu item in the sub-
menu.
9. Click "Next".
10. The "Configure connection" step is displayed
in the window.
11. Important settings in "Configure connection":
- In the selection list, select the "Ethernet gate-
way (e.g. for devices on the RS485)" connec-
tion type.
- Enter the IP address of your UMG 604 in the
"Address" input field (read out parameter
addresses 300 to 303 on the device).
- In the "Device address" selection field, select
the device address of your UMG 96-PA or
your UMG 96 of the PQ series (see user man-
ual and installation instructions for the device).
12. Click "Connection test”.
13. If the connection test is successful, the
"Display device information" window appears
with the serial number, hardware version and
firmware version.
14. Click "OK".
15. Complete the "Insert new device into the proj-
ect" step by clicking "Finish".
In “Recording configuration”, you can check and
configure which recordings the measurement
device should save if required.
A record holds a measured value or the mean
value of the measured value.

UMG 96-PA and UMG PQ series – PC connection via UMG 604 as a gateway
The PC connection of the device via the UMG 604
as gateway is the most common connection
between PC and device:
1. Configure your UMG 604 via Ethernet cable
on your PC in the network with DHCP server
as “DHCP Client” (IP address assigned au-
tomatically), without DHCP server as “Fixed
IP address” (see user manual and installation
instructions for the UMG 604).
2. Connect your device with the UMG 604 via
the RS485 interface (see installation instruc-
tions).
GridVis® software
Install the GridVis® software on your computer
and proceed as follows:
1. Open the GridVis® software on your PC.
2. In the menu bar, select “File” >
“New project”. If the project already exists,
open it by selecting “File” >
"Open project“.
3. The "New project" window is displayed.
4. In step 1, "Select project", click "Continue".
5. In step 2, "Project path", select the:
- “Project name”.
- “Project path”.
Insert UMG 604 in the project:
1. In the menu bar, select "File" > "New file".
2. The "New file" window is displayed.
3. In step 1, "Select file type", select the "File type"
(UMG 604) in the "DIN Rail" category.
4. Click "Next".
5. The "Configure connection"
step is displayed in the window.
6. Click "Finish".
7. Your project is displayed on the left in the "Proj-
ects" window in the work area.
ATTENTION
Indicates hazardous situations, that could lead to
property damage due to data loss or faults in the
IT network for example.
INFORMATION
Indicates procedures in which there is no hazard
of personal injury or material damage.
ATTENTION
Incorrect network settings can cause malfunctions
in the IT network and thus material damage!
Obtain information from your network admin-
istrator about the correct Ethernet network
settings for your device.
As an option to these connection possibilities, an
expansion module for the UMG 96-PA and the
UMG 96-PQ series offers an Ethernet interface
for communication. Information on the Expansion
module with Ethernet interface can be found in
the usage information on the module.

INFORMATION
The device with RCM-EL module has an Ether-
net interface and an RS-485 interface (fieldbus)
for communication which can be configured in the
Communication window.
When the PC is connected via Ethernet, the
device with module RCM-EL may be used as a
gateway (master).

9. Click "OK".
10. Complete the "Insert new device into the proj-
ect" step by clicking "Finish".
6. Select the nominal frequency under the
"Nominal values" menu in the "Configuration"
window, in accordance with the existing grid
conditions.
INFORMATION
To avoid data loss, save your changes to the
device configuration by pressing "Transfer" or
"Transfer to"!
