TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR POLYPROPYLENE (PP) FITTINGS
Fittings and pipe should be kept clean and undamaged before use.
Working Pressures and Temperatures:

Tube Types
• Plastic Tube: Polyethylene, nylon and polyurethane conforming
to the tolerances shown on the next page. For soft tubing or thin
wall tube we recommend the use of tube inserts.
• Braided Tube: Use of Tube to Hose Stems is essential when
using braided tube. Use of clamps to retain braided tube on barbs
is recommended.
Metal Tube (soft): Brass, copper or mild steel conforming to the
tolerances on the next page.
• Metal Tube (hard):We do not recommend John Guest fittings
for hard metal or chromium plated tubes. For stainless steel and
other polished metal tubes we recommend the use of Superseal
fittings. These are shown in our Full Catalog. It is essential that
outside diameters be free from score marks and that the tube
must be burr free before inserting into the fitting.
Tube Tolerances: John Guest fittings are offered for tubes with
outside diameters to the following tolerances:
Size (inches) 5/32 - 3/16 1/4 - 1/2

• Installation and System Testing: All tube and fittings
installations must be pressure tested after installation to ensure
system integrity before handing over to the final user. See also
“How to make a standard connection” on the back of the bag.
• Chemicals: Do not allow contact with aggressive chemicals,
fluxes, descalents, paint thinners or strippers, cellulose based
paint or jointing compounds. John Guest fittings are not suitable
for use with explosive gases or fuel oils.
• Materials: All PP, PPSV and ASVPP fittings materials in
direct contact with the water or foodstuff are Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) compliant. They are certified by NSF to
NSF61 for drinking water contact and NSF51 for food contact.
Maximum Torque Values for Plastic Threads NPT: Plastic
threads are not generally as strong as brass threads. Customers
and end users should be aware of this when choosing products
for their applications. Overtightening of plastic threads will cause
undue stress and eventual cracking and leakage. The maximum
torque figures for NPT threads used on John Guest fittings in
mating threads conforming to the relevant standards are shown
below:

It is recommended that all installations are checked prior to use
to determine that a seal has been made.
Maintenance and Replacement Intervals: John Guest products
generally require little maintenance but as a minimum we
recommend routine visual inspection. Frequency of visual
inspection will depend on severity of application and risk of failure.
If after visual inspection John Guest products appear damaged,
cracked, charred, discolored, heat distorted or corroded they
should be replaced. Any product that is or appears to be leaking
should be replaced. Product life is affected by the severity of the
application, the hostility of the working environment and contact
with aggressive chemicals or liquids. It is therefore important
that specific replacement intervals be considered by specifiers /
users /customers based on previous service life or when failure
could result in unacceptable downtime, damage or injury risk.
Cleaners and Sanitizing of Fittings: Our advice to customers is
to use cleaners and sanitizing agents that are above pH4 and low
in hypochlorite level. Fittings and parts that are cleaned and/or
sanitized should be rinsed immediately with copious amounts of
clean tap water to remove all traces of the cleaners. Our material
suppliers recommend ECOLAB Oasis 133 as a suitable external
cleaner for Polypropylene products manufactured by John Guest.
Product Selection and Installation: John Guest fittings and
related products are specifically designed and manufactured by
John Guest to the Technical Specifications set out in the John
Guest Catalog. All John Guest fittings and related products
should be selected, installed, used and maintained in accordance
with these Technical Specifications. It is the customer’s/user’s
responsibility to ensure that John Guest fittings and related
products are suitable for their intended applications, and are
properly installed and maintained and are used in accordance
with the Technical Specifications. It is also the customer’s/user’s
responsibility to provide its customers with any relevant technical
information about John Guest products it supplies them. The
company has a policy of continuous research and development
and reserves the right to amend without notice the specification
and design of all products. John Guest reserves the right to
change the colour and shape of products.
• Side Loads: John Guest products are not designed to be
used under side load as this may adversely affect their ability
to function longterm. Always ensure tubes have good alignment
with the fitting. They must also not be subjected to to any form
of impact or other damage, such as being hit or dropped, even
accidently. If fittings have damaged or suffered an impact, they
should be replaced immediately. John Guest warranty does not
cover loss caused by any form of damage.
• Warranty: While we give a warranty against defects in
manufacture or materials, it is the responsibility of the user/
installer to ensure that fittings and related products are suitable
for their application. The installation must be carried out correctly
in accordance with our recommendations, complying with
recognised codes of practice and relevant national standards,
and be properly maintained.
Making a Connection:
1. To prevent damage to ‘O’-ring remove all burrs and sharp
edges from tube and check no score marks.
2. Insert tube into fitting up to the pipe stop.
3. Pull tube to test it is secure. Test system to ensure no leakage.
To Disconnect:
Ensure the system in depressurized. Push the collet (gripper)
square against the fitting. With the collet head held in this
position the tube can be removed.

queues cannelées.
• Tube métallique (mou):
laiton, cuivre ou acier doux conformes
aux tolérances indiquées ci-dessous.
Tube métallique (dur):
Nous ne recommandons pas d’utiliser
des raccords John Guest sur des tubes en métal dur ou chromés.
Nous recommandons l’utilisation de raccords Superseal pour
les tubes en acier inoxydable ou autre métal poli. Voir notre
catalogue. Il est essentiel que les surfaces extérieures ne soient
pas rayées, et que le tube soit ébavuré avant son insertion dans
le raccord.
• Tolérances de tube

Les raccords John Guest ne doivent pas être utilisés avec des gaz
explosifs ou du fioul des hydrocarbures.
• Matériaux:
les matériaux des raccords PP, PPSV et ASVPP en
contact direct avec de l’eau ou des produits alimentaires sont
conformes aux exigences de la Food and Drug Administration
(FDA). Ils sont certifiés par la NSF selon NSF61 pour les produits
en contact avec de l’eau potable et NSF51 pour ceux en contact
avec des produits alimentaires.
• Valeurs de couple maximum pour filetages en plastique NPT:
Les
filetages en plastique ne sont généralement pas aussi solides que
les filetages en laiton. Les clients et utilisateurs finaux doivent
en être conscients lorsqu’ils choisissent des produits pour leurs
applications Un sur serrage d’un filetage plastique causera une
contrainte trop importante, occasionnant une fissure et des
fuites. Les valeurs de couple maximum pour filetages NPT, des
raccords John Guest montés sur des contre-parties conformes
aux normes, sont indiquées ci-dessous:

Il est recommandé de vérifier toutes les installations avant

• Intervalles d’entretien et de remplacement:
les produits John
Guest ne nécessitent peu d’entretien, mais, nous recommandons
toutefois d’effectuer des inspections visuelles régulièrement.
La fréquence de ces inspections dépendra de la rigueur de
l’application et du risque de défaillance. Si, après une inspection
visuelle, les produits John Guest semblent endommagés,
fissurés, brulés, décolorés, déformés par la chaleur ou corrodés,
ils doivent être remplacés. Un produit qui fuit ou semble
présenter une fuite doit être remplacé. La durée de vie d’un
produit est affectée par la rigueur de l’application, l’hostilité de
l’environnement et le contact avec des produits chimiques ou
corrosifs. Il est donc important que les prescripteurs, utilisateurs
et clients envisagent des intervalles de remplacement spécifiques
en fonction de la durée de vie des produits constatée, ou lorsqu’
si une défaillance pourrait entraîner des arrêts, dommages ou
tube stop
