Watersupply systems may, because ofsuch events ashigh line
pressure,frequentcut-offs,theeffectsofwaterhammeramongothers,
haveinstalleddevicessuchaspressurereducingvalves,checkvalves,
backowpreventers,etc.tocontrolthesetypesofproblems.When
thesedevicesarenotequippedwithaninternalby-pass,andnoother
measuresaretaken,thedevicescausethewatersystemtobeclosed.
Aswaterisheated,itexpands(thermalexpansion)andclosedsystems
donotallowfortheexpansionofheatedwater.
Thewater withinthe waterheater tankexpands asit isheated and
increasesthepressureofthewatersystem.Iftherelievingpointofthe
waterheater’stemperature-pressurereliefvalveisreached,thevalvewill
relievetheexcesspressure.The temperature-pressure relief valve
is not intended for the constant relief of thermal expansion.Thisis
anunacceptableconditionandmustbecorrected.
Itisrecommended thatanydevicesinstalled whichcouldcreate a
closedsystemhaveaby-passand/orthesystemhaveanexpansion
tanktorelievethepressurebuiltbythermalexpansioninthewater
system.Expansiontanksareavailablefororderingthroughalocal
plumbingcontractor.Contactthelocalwatersupplierand/oraservice
agencyforassistanceincontrollingthesesituations.
NOTE: To protect against untimely corrosion of hot and cold
water ttings, it is strongly recommended that di-electric unions
or couplings be installed on this water heater when connected
to copper pipe.
All gas piping must complywith local codesand ordinances orwith the
NaturalGasandPropaneInstallationCode(CAN/CSAB149.1)whichever
applies.Copperandbrasstubingandttings(excepttinlinedcoppertubing)
shouldnotbeused.

CORROSION OF THE FLUEWAYS AND VENT SYSTEM MAY OCCUR IF
AIR FOR COMBUSTION CONTAINS CERTAIN CHEMICAL VAPORS. SUCH
CORROSION MAY RESULT IN FAILURE AND RISK OF ASPHYXIATION.
Spraycan propellants, cleaningsolvents, refrigeratorand air
conditioningrefrigerants, swimmingpool chemicals, calcium and
sodiumchloride(watersoftenersalt),waxes,andprocesschemicals
aretypicalcompoundswhicharepotentiallycorrosive.
Donotstoreproductsofthissortneartheheater.Also,airwhichis
brought in contact withthe heater shouldnot contain anyof these
chemicals.Ifnecessary,uncontaminatedairshouldbeobtainedfrom
remoteoroutsidesources.Thelimitedwarrantyisvoidedwhenfailure
ofwaterheaterisduetoacorrosiveatmosphere.(Seelimitedwarranty
forcompletetermsandconditions).
WATER PIPING
HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:
Waterheaters are intendedto produce hotwater.Waterheated to
atemperature which will satisfy spaceheating, clotheswashing,
dishwashing, cleaning andother sanitizingneeds can scaldand
permanentlyinjureyou uponcontact. Somepeoplearemore likely
tobe permanently injuredby hot waterthan others.These include
theelderly,children,the inrm, orphysically/mentallyhandicapped.
Ifanyoneusinghotwaterinyourhometsintooneofthesegroups
orifthereisalocalcodeorstatelawrequiringacertaintemperature
wateratthehotwatertap,thenyoumusttakespecialprecautions.In
additiontousingthelowestpossibletemperaturesettingthatsatises
yourhotwaterneeds,ameanssuchasa*mixingvalveshouldbeused
atthehotwatertapsusedbythesepeopleoratthewaterheater,see
Figure2.Valvesforreducingpointofusetemperaturebymixingcold
andhotwaterarealsoavailable:
Consult a Qualied Installeror ServiceAgency. Follow manufacturer’s
instructionsforinstallationofthevalves.Beforechangingthefactorysettingon
thethermostat,readthe“TemperatureRegulation”sectioninthismanual.
Thiswaterheatershouldnotbeconnectedtoanyheatingsystemsor
component(s)usedwithanon-potablewaterheatingappliance.
All piping components connected tothis unit forspace heating
applicationsshouldbesuitableforusewithpotablewater.
Toxicchemicals,suchasthoseusedforboilertreatmentshouldnotbe
introducedintothissystem.
When the system requireswater for spaceheating at temperatures
higherthanrequiredfordomesticwaterpurposes,amixingvalvemustbe
installed.PleaserefertoFigure2forsuggestedpipingarrangement.
INSTALLING THE NEW WATER HEATER
