NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapter before
attaching the adapter to the water heater connections. Do not
solder the water lines directly to the water heater connections.
It will harm the dip tube and damage the tank.

TEMPERATURE-PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
This heater is provided with a properly certified combination
temperature-pressurereliefvalvebythemanufacturer.
Thevalve iscertiedby a nationallyrecognized testinglaboratory
thatmaintainsperiodicinspectionofproductionoflistedequipmentof
materialsasmeetingrequirementsforReliefValvesforHotWaterSupply
Systems,ANSIZ21.22•CSA4.4,andcoderequirementsofASME.
Ifreplaced,thevalvemustmeettherequirementsoflocalcodes,but
notlessthanacombinationtemperatureandpressurereliefvalve
certiedasindicatedintheaboveparagraph.
The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure not to
exceedthemarkedhydrostaticworkingpressureofthewaterheater
(150psi=1,035kPa)andadischargecapacitynotlessthanthewater
heaterinputrateasshownonthemodelratingplate.
Forsafeoperationofthewaterheater,thereliefvalvemustnotbe
removedfromitsdesignatedopeningnorplugged.
Thetemperature-pressurereliefvalvemustbeinstalleddirectlyinto
thettingofthewaterheaterdesignedforthereliefvalve.Position
thevalvedownward andprovidetubing sothatanydischarge will
exitonlywithin6inches(15.2cm)above,oratanydistancebelow
thestructuraloor.Becertainthatnocontactismadewithanylive
electricalpart.Thedischargeopeningmustnotbeblockedorreduced
insizeunderanycircumstances.Excessivelength,over30feet(9.14
m),oruseofmorethanfourelbowscancauserestrictionandreduce
thedischargecapacityofthevalve,seeFigures10or14.
Novalveorotherobstructionistobeplacedbetweenthereliefvalve
andthetank.Donotconnecttubingdirectlytodischargedrainunless
a6”(15.2cm)airgapisprovided.Topreventbodilyinjury,hazardto
life,orpropertydamage,thereliefvalvemustbeallowedtodischarge
waterinquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.Ifthedischarge
pipeisnotconnectedtoadrainorothersuitablemeans,thewater
owmaycausepropertydamage.
TheDischargePipe:
•Shouldnotbesmallerinsizethantheoutletpipesizeofthevalve,or
haveanyreducingcouplingsorotherrestrictions.
•Shouldnotbepluggedorblocked.
•Shouldbeofmateriallistedforhotwaterdistribution.
•Shouldbeinstalledsoastoallowcompletedrainageofboththe
temperature-pressurereliefvalve,andthedischargepipe.
•Mustterminateamaximumofsixinchesaboveaoordrainorexternal
tothebuilding.Incoldclimates,itisrecommendedthatthedischarge
pipebeterminatedatanadequatedraininsidethebuilding.
•Shouldnothaveanyvalvebetweenthereliefvalveandtank.
The temperature-pressurerelief valve must bemanually operated
periodically.Cautionshouldbetakentoensurethat(1)nooneisinfront
oforaroundtheoutletofthetemperature-pressurereliefvalvedischarge
line,and(2)thewatermanuallydischargedwillnotcauseanybodilyinjury
orpropertydamagebecausethewatermaybeextremelyhot.
Ifaftermanuallyoperatingthevalve,itfailstocompletelyresetand
continues torelease water, immediately close thecold water inlet
tothewaterheater,followthedraininginstructions,andreplacethe
temperature-pressurereliefvalvewithanewone.
