Galactic Garden Ant Colony 1 2 Watch your plants grow from the roots up! Have you ever wanted to grow a sunflower or a tomato? What about a pine tree? Galactic Garden lets you choose from a variety of seeds and greenhouse styles to grow plants and ants in special see-through Galactic Gel. Created by NASA scientists to grow vegetables and ecosystems in space, Galactic Gel has all the nutrients your plants and ants need to survive.
Before You Begin 1) Before planting the seeds, wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them with a clean paper towel. 2) Remove the cover and dry away any water drops from the cover and the inside walls of the Galactic Garden. Planting Your Galactic Garden CAUTION: NEVER TOUCH THE SEEDS OR THE GEL WITH YOUR HANDS 1) Push the wooden planting tool into the Galactic Gel to create small holes in the gel.
3) Once 15 to 25 ants have been transferred, immediately close the Ant Colony. 4) Put your Ant Colony in a shady place with a temperature of about 6580 degrees Fahrenheit. Never place your Ant Colony in direct sunlight or in a location with excessive temperatures. 5) Open the lid of your Ant Colony for a few minutes every 30 days. This will allow fresh air into the Ant Colony. 6) Your plants will grow with the normal environment light.
3) Add 1 teaspoon of sugar to the Galactic Gel mix and stir well, eliminating any clumps. 4) Open the Galactic Gel Liquid vial and pour it into the Galactic Gel mix. Stir well. 5) Place the bowl in a microwave at 500w or the pan over a low flame. Cook long enough to boil the gel liquid, making sure it doesn’t boil over. Boil the liquid for 20 seconds. 6) Pour the liquid into the transparent Galactic Garden, filling the container to 1/3 of its total capacity and wait for the gel to cool completely.
• One of the most interesting things about ants is that they work together. Ants cannot survive alone. Like us, they live in communities. They cooperate with each other to build their homes, forage for food, care for the queen and the young ants, and protect their habitat. • Benjamin Franklin conducted experiments with ants to find out how they let each other know where to find food. • Ants have special glands that make chemicals called pheromones. Pheromones make other ants change they way they act.
species of ants dig into the ground. All alone, each queen clears a small chamber, seals the tunnel, and starts laying eggs. The queens will never leave their chambers. The eggs hatch and become larvae which are little, legless, worm-like creatures that must be fed by the queen. When the larvae are fully grown, they become “pupae”. Ant pupae have either a barrel or an ant shape. Over time, new adult ants emerge from the pupae.
There is something common to all these different ant communities. They consist of female workers that take care of the queen and the young ants. They work together to make sure that their colony survives. Ants are some of the longestliving insects. In fact, some ant queens have been known to live up to fifteen years, while workers may live up to seven years. As you can tell, ants are a very successful group of animals! There are some very interesting books about ants.
