IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS Intended use The appliance is designed and intended for household use only. It shall only be used for coffee preparation and to heat milk and water, according to these instructions. Use for any other purpose will be deemed improper. JURA Elektroapparate AG cannot accept any responsibility for the consequences of improper use.
IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS J CAUTION This appliance is for household use. Any servicing other than cleaning and user maintenance shall be performed by an authorized service representative: Z Do not immerse base in water or try to disassemble. Z Do not put the appliance or any individual parts in the dishwasher. Z Check voltage to be sure that the voltage indicated on the name plate complies with your voltage. The name plate is located on the underside of the appliance.

It will damage the functioning of the brewing chamber. Never fill sugar coated coffee beans into the bean container. In case of doubt, call your dealer.

You will find interesting and up-to-date information on your JURA and on every aspect of coffee. Setting up the machine When setting up your JURA, please note the following: Place the JURA on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water. Choose a spot for your JURA which protects the machine against overheating.
1 Preparing and using for the first time T You will then be able to read the degree of water hardness from the discoloration of the Aquadur® test strip and the description on the packaging. 1 Preparing and using for the first time ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display to confirm the setting. ‘Water hardness’ E If you do not know the hardness of your water, you must find this out first (see Chapter 1 ‘Preparing and using for the first time – Determining the water hardness’). T Press the ‘ < ’ or ‘ > ’ button to change the water hardness setting, for example to ‘25 °dH’. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display.
1 Preparing and using for the first time E The machine automatically detects that you have just inserted the filter cartridge. ‘Use filter’ / ‘Saved’ ‘Switch open’ T Place a receptacle (at least 10 oz or 300 ml) under the fine foam frother. T Turn the switch to the x position. ‘Filter is being rinsed’, water flows out of the fine foam frother. Rinsing of the filter stops automatically after approximately 10 oz (300 ml). ‘Switch close’ appears on the display. T Turn the switch to the ° position.

T Turn the switch to the x position. ‘System is filling’, the system fills up with water. ‘Switch close’ T Turn the switch to the ° position. ‘System is filling’ ‘Machine is rinsing’, the system is rinsed. The rinse stops automatically. Your JURA is ready for use. E The start screen shows the products you can prepare.
2 Preparation 2 Preparation J WARNING Hot coffee, hot steam and hot water can cause scalding. Scalding is a serious burn. T Use extreme care when handling hot liquid or steam. T Allow liquid to cool down before drinking. T In the event of scalding, rinse affected area with cold water and seek medical attention. T Keep children AWAY. E You can stop the machine at any time while a specialty coffee, steam or hot water is being prepared.
2 Preparation Espresso and coffee Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one coffee. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Place a cup under the coffee spout. T Press the ‘Coffee’ button. Preparation starts. ‘Coffee’ and the coffee strength are displayed. The preset amount of water for coffee flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. Your JURA is once more ready for use.
2 Preparation T Turn the switch to the ° position. Coffee preparation starts. The preset amount of water for espresso flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. Your JURA is once more ready for use. To ensure that the fine foam frother always works properly, you must clean it daily when you have been preparing milk (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the fine foam frother’). Milk foam Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Place a cup under the fine foam frother.
2 Preparation Permanently setting the amount of water for the cup size It is easy to permanently adjust the amount of water for all single products to the cup size. Adjust the amount once as shown in the following example. Every time you prepare a drink in the future, this amount will be dispensed. Example: Proceed as follows to permanently set the amount of water for one coffee. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. Milk is connected to the fine foam frother T Place a cup under the coffee spout.
2 Preparation T Open the cover of the grinder adjustment switch. T Press the ‘Espresso’ button to start preparation. T Turn the grinder adjustment switch to the desired position while the grinder is running. The preset amount of water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. T Close the cover of the grinder adjustment switch. Hot water To obtain a perfect water flow, use the hot-water nozzle. J CAUTION There is a danger of scalding from hot water splashes.
3 3 Daily operation Daily operation Filling the water tank CAUTION Daily maintenance of the machine and hygiene when handling milk, coffee and water are key to a perfect coffee result in the cup every time. You should therefore change the water daily. Milk, sparkling mineral water or other liquids can damage the water tank or the machine. T Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water. T Open the water tank cover. T Remove the water tank and rinse it with cold water.
3 Daily operation T Refit the coffee grounds container and the drip tray. T Rinse the water tank with clean water. T Clean the fine foam frother (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the fine foam frother’). T Remove the milk pipe and rinse it thoroughly under running water. T Dismantle and rinse the fine foam frother (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Dismantling and rinsing the fine foam frother’). T Wipe the surface of the machine with a clean, soft, damp cloth (e.g. microfiber cloth).
3 Daily operation If milk has been prepared but you have not started milk system cleaning, the milk system is rinsed first (‘Milk system is being rinsed’). ‘Machine is rinsing’, the system rinses itself. The operation stops automatically. Your JURA is switched off.

T Keep children AWAY. In the program item ‘Expert mode’ you can make individual settings for all specialty coffees and hot water.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode E Next select the button of the product for which you would like to make settings. No product is prepared at this point. E To display more products, press the ‘ > ’ button (bottom right). T Press the ‘Coffee’ button. ‘Coffee’ T Press the ‘Coffee strength’ button. ‘Coffee’ appears and the coffee strength is displayed. T Press the ‘ < ’ or ‘ > ’ button to change the setting for the coffee strength. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode Setting the water hardness The harder the water is, the more frequently the JURA needs to be descaled. It is therefore important to set the water hardness accurately. The water hardness was set when the machine was first used. You can change this setting at any time. The water hardness can be adjusted on a continuous scale between 1 °dH and 30 °dH. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Press the ‘ P ’ button.
4 Language Permanent settings in programming mode In this program item you can set the language used by your JURA. Example: Proceed as follows to change the language from ‘English’ to ‘Deutsch’. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Press the ‘ P ’ button. T Press the ‘ > ’ button several times until ‘4/4’ is displayed. T Press the ‘Choose language’ button. ‘Choose language’ E To display more languages, press the ‘ > ’ button (bottom right).
5 5 Maintenance Maintenance J WARNING Use of maintenance products that are harmful to health and discharge of liquids during maintenance program. Harmful if swallowed. Irritating to eyes and skin. T Keep children AWAY. T Keep children away from the machine while it is performing a maintenance program. T Avoid contact with skin and eyes. T Avoid generation of dust. Do not inhale dust. T When using do not eat or drink. T Keep maintenance products away from food, drink and animal food.
5 Rinsing the machine Maintenance You can start coffee system rinsing manually at any time. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Place a receptacle under the coffee spout. T Press the ‘ c ’ button (white Maintenance symbol). T Press the ‘Rinse the coffee system’ button to start the rinse operation. ‘Machine is rinsing’, water flows out of the coffee spout. The operation stops automatically. The start screen is displayed.
5 Maintenance Cleaning the fine foam frother To ensure that the fine foam frother always works properly, you must clean it daily when you have been preparing milk. J WARNING Non-recommended cleaning agents will not optimally remove milk residues. This may cause the cappuccino frother to become blocked and fly off the machine. Discharge of hot steam. T Use only original JURA milk system cleaner. J WARNING Harmful and irritating cleaning agent. Harmful if swallowed. Irritating to eyes and skin.
5 Maintenance T Turn the switch to the ° position. ‘Clean the milk system’ T Rinse the receptacle thoroughly, fill it with 8.5 oz (250 ml) of fresh water and immerse the milk pipe in the water. T Empty the other receptacle and place it under the fine foam frother once more. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Switch open’ T Turn the switch to the x position. ‘Milk system is being cleaned’ appears and the fine foam frother and the milk pipe are rinsed with fresh water.
5 Maintenance Inserting the filter Your JURA no longer has to be descaled if you are using the CLEARYL Smart filter cartridge. If you did not insert the filter cartridge the first time you used the machine, you can do this now as follows. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Remove and empty the water tank. T Fit the filter cartridge extension supplied on top of a CLEARYL Smart filter cartridge. T Insert the filter cartridge with its extension into the water tank.
5 Maintenance T Remove and empty the water tank. T Turn the filter cartridge anticlockwise and remove it along with the extension from the water tank. T Fit the filter cartridge extension on top of a new CLEARYL Smart filter cartridge. T Insert the filter cartridge with its extension into the water tank. T Turn the filter cartridge clockwise until it audibly clicks into place. T Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the tank. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display.
5 Maintenance J WARNING Harmful and irritating cleaning agent. Harmful if swallowed. Irritating to eyes and skin. T Keep children AWAY. T Avoid contact with skin and eyes. T Avoid generation of dust. Do not inhale dust. T After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. In case of skin irritation, seek medical advice. T After eye contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water and seek medical advice. T If swallowed, rinse mouth immediately and drink large quantities of water.
5 Maintenance T Insert a JURA cleaning tablet into the filler funnel. T Close the cover of the filler funnel. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Machine is being cleaned’, water flows out of the coffee spout several times. The operation stops automatically. ‘Empty coffee grounds container’ T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. Cleaning is now complete. The start screen is displayed.
5 Maintenance E The descaling program lasts approximately 40 minutes. E JURA descaling tablets are available from specialized dealers. E If the descaling agent comes into contact with sensitive surfaces (e.g. marble), damage cannot be ruled out. Clean up any splashes immediately. Precondition: ‘Decalcify machine’ is displayed. T Press the ‘ c ’ button (red Maintenance symbol). ‘Descale’ T Press the ‘Start’ button. T Press the ‘Next’ button.
5 Maintenance T Empty the receptacle and place it under the fine foam frother and the coffee spout. T Remove the water tank and rinse it thoroughly. T Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the tank. ‘Switch open’ T Turn the switch to the x position. ‘Machine is being descaled’, the descaling operation is continued. The operation is interrupted, ‘Switch close’. T Turn the switch to the ° position. ‘Machine is being descaled’, the descaling operation is continued.
5 Maintenance Descaling the water tank 38 Limescale deposits may form in the water tank. To ensure correct function of the machine, descale the water tank from time to time. T Remove the water tank. T If you use a CLEARYL Smart filter cartridge, remove this. T Completely fill the water tank and dissolve 3 JURA descaling tablets in it. T Leave the water tank with the descaling solution for several hours (e.g. overnight). T Empty the water tank and rinse it thoroughly.
6 Display messages 6 Display messages Message ‘Fill water tank’ Cause/Result The water tank is empty. You cannot prepare any products. ‘Empty coffee grounds container’ The coffee grounds container is full. You cannot prepare any products. T Empty the coffee grounds container and the drip tray (see Chapter 3 ‘Daily operation – Daily maintenance’). ‘Drip tray not fitted’ The drip tray is not inserted correctly or is not inserted at all. You cannot prepare any products. The bean container is empty.
7 Troubleshooting 7 Troubleshooting Problem Insufficient foam is produced when the milk is frothed or milk sprays out of the fine foam frother. Cause/Result The fine foam frother is dirty. Coffee only comes out in drips when it is being prepared. The coffee is ground too finely and obstructs the system. The water hardness may not have been correctly set. T Set the grinder to a coarser setting (see Chapter 2 ‘Preparation – Adjusting the grinder’).
7 Problem Other ‘ERROR’ messages are displayed. Cause/Result Troubleshooting Action – T Switch the JURA off with the On/ Off button Q. 8 8 Transport and environmentally friendly disposal Transport and environmentally friendly disposal Transport / Emptying the system Keep the packaging for your JURA. It should be used to protect the machine during transport. In order to protect the JURA from frost during transport, the system must be emptied. Precondition: The start screen is displayed. T Remove the milk pipe from the fine foam frother. T Place a receptacle under the fine foam frother. T Press the ‘Milk foam’ button.
