Before using the machine read these instructions for use thoroughly and completely and comply with the instructions they contain.
Important information U U Never open and repair the machine yourself. Do not modify the machine in any way that is not described in these instructions for use. The machine contains live parts. If opened, there is a danger of potentially fatal injury. Repairs may only be carried out by authorised JURA service centres, using original spare parts and accessories.
Important information U U U U U U U U U U U 8 Do not immerse the IMPRESSA, mains cable or connections in water. Do not put the IMPRESSA or any individual parts in the dishwasher. Switch your IMPRESSA off at the power switch before any cleaning operation. Always wipe the IMPRESSA with a damp cloth rather than a wet one, and protect it from prolonged exposure to water splash. Only connect the machine to the mains voltage in accordance with the information on the rating plate.
Important information U Children aged 8 and over may only operate the machine without supervision if they have been instructed in how to use it safely. Children must be able to recognise and understand the potential dangers arising from incorrect use.

Setting up the machine When setting up your IMPRESSA, please note the following: Place the IMPRESSA on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water.

T Insert the mains plug into a power socket. 3 T Switch on the IMPRESSA using the power switch on the right-hand side of the machine. Q T Press the On/Off button to switch the IMPRESSA on. The display shows the languages you can choose from. E To display more languages, press the ‘Next’ button (bottom right). T Press the button that corresponds to the language you want, e.g. ‘English’.

T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother, the coffee spout and the hot-water nozzle. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Filter is being rinsed.’, water flows out of the hot-water nozzle. E You can interrupt rinsing of the filter at any time by pressing any button. Press the Rotary Switch k to continue rinsing of the filter. E The water may be slightly discoloured.

T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Fill water tank’ T Remove the water tank and rinse it with cold water. T Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the tank. ‘Machine is heating.’ ‘Please press the Rotary Switch.’ T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother, the coffee spout and the hot-water nozzle. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘System is filling.
1 Preparing and using for the first time Connecting milk Your IMPRESSA creates fine, creamy, feather-light milk foam with a perfect consistency. The most important requirement for frothing milk is a milk temperature of 4–8 °C. We would therefore recommend using a milk cooler or a vacuum milk container. T Attach the milk pipe to the cappuccino frother. To do this, attach the end of the milk pipe to the connector on the lefthand side of the cappuccino frother.
2 Preparation 2 Preparation E You can stop preparation of a speciality coffee, speciality coffee with milk or hot water at any time. To do this press the Rotary Switch k. E During the grinding operation you can select the coffee strength of individual products by turning the Rotary Switch g: ; (extra-mild), ;; (mild), ;;; (normal), ;;;; (strong) or ;;;;; (extra-strong). E During preparation, you can change the preset amount of water by turning the Rotary Switch g or pressing the ‘ < ’ and ‘ > ’ buttons.
2 Preparation Espresso and coffee ‘Espresso’ and ‘Coffee’ are prepared following this model. Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one coffee. T Place a cup under the coffee spout. T Press the ‘Coffee’ button. Preparation starts. The preset amount of water for coffee flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display.
2 Preparation Latte macchiato, cappuccino Your IMPRESSA can prepare a latte macchiato or cappuccino at the touch of a button. There is no need to move the glass or cup. Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one latte macchiato. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. Milk is connected to the cappuccino frother. T Place a glass under the cappuccino frother. T Turn the setting wheel of the cappuccino frother to the Milk Foam position ü. T Press the ‘Latte macchiato’ button.
2 Preparation T Press the ‘1 portion milk’ button. The machine heats up. ‘1 portion milk’ appears and the milk foam is prepared. Preparation stops automatically when the preset amount of milk foam is reached. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display. To make sure the cappuccino frother always works properly, rinse and clean it regularly (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Rinsing the cappuccino frother’).
2 Preparation T Press the ‘Espresso’ button. Preparation starts. The preset amount of water for espresso flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display. Permanently setting the amount of water for the cup size It is easy to permanently adjust the amount of water for all products to the cup size. Adjust the amount once as shown in the following example. Every time you prepare a drink in the future, this amount will be dispensed.
2 Preparation Adjusting the grinder CAUTION You can adjust the grinder on a continuous scale to suit the degree of roast of your coffee. If you adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is not operating, the grinder adjustment switch could be damaged. T Only adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is running. The consistency of grind is correct if the coffee flows regularly from the coffee spout. In addition a fine, thick crema forms.
3 3 Daily operation Daily operation Switching on When the IMPRESSA is switched on, a rinse operation is automatically initiated. In programming mode you can change this setting so that the machine prompts you to perform the switch-on rinse by pressing the Rotary Switch k (see Chapter 4 ‘Permanent settings in programming mode – Maintenance settings’). Precondition: Your IMPRESSA is switched on at the power switch. T Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
3 Daily operation Switching off When you switch your IMPRESSA off, the spouts used to prepare a speciality coffee or milk are rinsed. T Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the cappuccino frother. Q T Press the On/Off button. ‘Machine is rinsing.’, ‘Milk system is being rinsed.’. The spouts used to prepare a speciality coffee or milk are rinsed. The operation stops automatically. Your IMPRESSA is switched off.
4 4 Permanent settings in programming mode Permanent settings in programming mode Press the P button to enter programming mode. You can navigate through the programme items and permanently save the required settings simply by turning the Rotary Switch and using the multifunction buttons.

T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. T Press the ‘Next’ button. T Press the ‘Interval’ button.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode Example: Proceed as follows to make the machine prompt you to rinse the milk system immediately after preparing a speciality coffee with milk. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/6)’ g T Turn the Rotary Switch until the programme item ‘Maintenance settings (3/6)’ is displayed. T Press the ‘Rinse the milk system’ button. ‘Rinse the milk system’ T Press the ‘Immediate’ button. T Press the ‘Save’ button.
4 O Energy-saving mode Permanent settings in programming mode T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Maintenance settings (3/6)’. T Press the P button to exit programming mode. ‘Please select product:’ In the programme item ‘Machine settings (4/6)’ / ‘Save energy’ you can permanently set an energy-saving mode (Energy Save Mode, E.S.M.©): ‘Active’ U Soon after the last preparation, the IMPRESSA stops heating up. After about 5 minutes the message ‘Energy Save’ is displayed.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode Automatic switch-off By instructing your IMPRESSA to automatically switch itself off, you can cut down your energy consumption. If this function is activated, your IMPRESSA switches off automatically after the preset time following the last action on the machine. You can set the automatic switch-off to 15 minutes, 30 minutes or 1–15 hours. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. O T Press the P button.
4 Restore factory settings Permanent settings in programming mode In the programme item ‘Machine settings (4/6)’ / ‘Machine’ you can reset various settings to their factory settings: ‘Machine’ U All user settings (apart from the ‘filter’ and ‘water hardness’) are reset to factory settings. Your IMPRESSA then switches off. ‘Product’ U The settings (amount of water, aroma, temperature etc.) for any product can be reset individually to the factory settings.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode Language In this programme item you can set the language used by your IMPRESSA. E If you choose the wrong language by mistake, you can easily reset the machine to ‘English’: Press the P button to enter programming mode. Use the Rotary Switch g to select programme item ‘5/6’ and then press the top left-hand button. Example: Proceed as follows to change the language from ‘English’ to ‘Deutsch’. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed.

5 5 Maintenance Maintenance Your IMPRESSA has the following integrated maintenance programmes: Rinsing the machine (‘Rinse the coffee system’) Cleaning the cappuccino frother (‘Clean the milk system’) Changing the filter (‘Change the filter’) (only if filter is activated) Cleaning the machine (‘Clean’) Descaling the machine (‘Descale’) (only if filter is not activated) U U U U U E Clean or descale the machine, rinse the milk system or change the filter when you are prompted to do so.
5 Rinsing the cappuccino frother Maintenance After each milk preparation, the IMPRESSA prompts you to rinse the milk system. Precondition: ‘Rinse the milk system’ is displayed. T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘Milk system is being rinsed.’, water flows out of the cappuccino frother. The rinse stops automatically and ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display.
5 Maintenance T Empty the other receptacle and place it under the cappuccino frother again. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Milk system is being cleaned.’, the cappuccino frother and the pipe are rinsed with fresh water. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display. Dismantling and rinsing the cappuccino frother T Carefully pull the cappuccino frother down and off. T Dismantle the cappuccino frother into its individual parts. T Rinse all parts of the cappuccino frother thoroughly under running water.
5 Maintenance T Press the ‘Filter’ button. ‘Filter’ T Press the ‘Active’ button. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Insert filter’ T Remove the filter cartridge extension from the Welcome Pack. T Fit the filter extension on top of a CLARIS Blue filter cartridge. T Remove and empty the water tank. T Open the filter holder and insert the filter cartridge into the water tank, exerting slight pressure. T Close the filter holder. It will click into place audibly.
5 Maintenance Changing the filter E After 50 litres of water have flowed through, the filter will cease to work. Your IMPRESSA will automatically prompt you to change the filter. E After two months, the filter will cease to work. Set the date on the date plate on the filter holder in the water tank. E If the CLARIS Blue filter cartridge is not activated in programming mode, you will not be prompted to change the filter. Precondition: ‘Change filter’ is displayed. The c symbol is also displayed.
5 Cleaning the machine CAUTION Maintenance After 200 preparations or 80 switch-on rinses, the IMPRESSA will prompt you to clean it. If the wrong cleaning agent is used, the machine could be damaged and/or traces could be left behind in the water. T Use only original JURA maintenance products. E The cleaning programme lasts approximately 20 minutes. E Do not interrupt the cleaning programme. The quality of cleaning will be impaired if you do so.
5 Maintenance T Insert a JURA cleaning tablet into the filler funnel. T Close the cover of the filler funnel. ‘Please press the Rotary Switch.’. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘Machine is being cleaned.’, water flows repeatedly out of the coffee spout and the cappuccino frother. The operation is interrupted, ‘Empty drip tray’. T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. Cleaning is now complete. Your IMPRESSA is once more ready for use.
5 Maintenance Precondition: ‘Decalcify machine’ is displayed. The c symbol is also displayed. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/6)’ T Press the ‘Descale’ button. ‘Descale’ E If you do not want to start descaling just yet, press the ‘ ’ button. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Empty drip tray’ T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. ‘Pour descaling agent into water tank’ T Remove and empty the water tank.
5 Maintenance T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother, the coffee spout and the hot-water nozzle. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘Machine is being descaled.’, water flows out of the hotwater nozzle and the cappuccino frother. ‘Machine is heating.’, ‘Machine is rinsing.’, water flows out of the coffee spout. The operation stops automatically, ‘Empty drip tray’. T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. Descaling is now complete.
5 Descaling the water tank Maintenance Limescale deposits may form in the water tank. To ensure correct function of the machine, descale the water tank from time to time. T Remove the water tank. T If you use a CLARIS Blue filter cartridge, remove this. T Descale the tank with a mild conventional descaling agent in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. T Rinse out the water tank thoroughly. T If you use a CLARIS Blue filter cartridge, insert this again.
6 Display messages 6 Display messages Message ‘Fill water tank’ Cause/Result The water tank is empty. You cannot prepare any products. ‘Empty coffee grounds container’ The coffee grounds container is full. You cannot prepare any products. T Empty the coffee grounds container and the drip tray (see Chapter 3 ‘Daily operation – Daily maintenance’). ‘Empty drip tray’ The drip tray is full. You cannot prepare any products. T Empty the drip tray and the coffee grounds container.
6 Display messages Message ‘Not enough ground coffee’ Cause/Result There is insufficient ground coffee in the machine; the IMPRESSA stops the operation. Action T The next time you prepare a beverage, add more ground coffee (see Chapter 2 ‘Preparation – Ground coffee’).
7 Troubleshooting 7 Troubleshooting Problem When preparing a latte macchiato, the typical three layers do not form. Cause/Result – Insufficient foam is produced when the milk is frothed or milk sprays from the cappuccino frother. The cappuccino frother is dirty. T Rinse and clean the cappuccino frother (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Rinsing the machine’). T Check that the air intake pipe is fitted on the cappuccino frother. T Rinse or replace the air intake pipe.
7 Troubleshooting Problem Little or no water or steam comes out of the cappuccino frother. The pump is very quiet. Cause/Result The connector of the cappuccino frother may be blocked by milk residues or limescale fragments loosened during descaling. Grinder is making a very loud noise. There are foreign objects in the grinder. T Contact customer support in your country (see Chapter 11 ‘JURA contact details / Legal information’). ‘ERROR 2’ is displayed.

Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. T Carefully pull the cappuccino frother down and off. T Place a receptacle under the connector of the cappuccino frother. T Press the ‘1 portion milk’ button. ‘1 portion milk’, hot steam is discharged from the connector.
