Important information Important information Proper use The machine is designed and intended for private domestic use. It should only be used for coffee preparation and to heat milk and water. Before using the machine read these instructions for use thoroughly and completely and comply with the instructions they contain.
Important information U U Never open and repair the machine yourself. Do not modify the machine in any way that is not described in these instructions for use. The machine contains live parts. If opened, there is a danger of potentially fatal injury. Repairs may only be carried out by authorised JURA service centres, using original spare parts and accessories.
Important information U U U U U U U U U U U 8 Do not immerse the IMPRESSA, mains cable or connections in water. Do not put the IMPRESSA or any individual parts in the dishwasher. Switch your IMPRESSA off at the power switch before any cleaning operation. Always wipe the IMPRESSA with a damp cloth rather than a wet one, and protect it from prolonged exposure to water splash. Only connect the machine to the mains voltage in accordance with the information on the rating plate.
Important information U Children aged 8 and over may only use the machine without supervision if they have been instructed in how to use it safely. Children must be aware of and understand the possible dangers caused by misusing the machine.

Setting up the machine When setting up your IMPRESSA, please note the following: Place the IMPRESSA on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water.

T Insert the mains plug into a power socket. 3 T Switch on the IMPRESSA using the power switch on the lefthand side of the machine. Q T Press the On/Off button to switch the IMPRESSA on. The display shows the languages you can choose from. E To display more languages, press the ‘Next’ button (bottom right). T Press the button that corresponds to the language you want, e.g. ‘English’.

T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Filter is being rinsed.’, water flows out of the cappuccino frother. E You can interrupt rinsing of the filter at any time by pressing any button. Press the Rotary Switch k to continue rinsing of the filter. E The water may be slightly discoloured. This is not harmful to health and does not affect the taste.
1 Preparing and using for the first time E If you do not know the hardness of your water, you must find this out first (see Chapter 1 ‘Preparing and using for the first time – Determining the water hardness’). g T Turn the Rotary Switch to change the water hardness setting, e.g. to ‘25 °dH’. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Fill water tank.’ T Open the water tank cover. T Remove the water tank and rinse it with cold water.
1 Preparing and using for the first time Adjusting the grinder CAUTION You can adjust the grinder on a continuous scale to suit the degree of roast of your coffee. If you adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is not operating, the grinder adjustment switch could be damaged. T Only adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is running. The consistency of grind is correct if the coffee flows regularly from the coffee spout. In addition a fine, thick crema forms.
1 Preparing and using for the first time Filling the water tank CAUTION Daily maintenance of the machine and hygiene when handling milk, coffee and water are key to a perfect coffee result in the cup every time. You should therefore change the water daily. Milk, sparkling mineral water or other liquids can damage the water tank or the machine. T Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold water. T Open the water tank cover. T Remove the water tank and rinse it with cold water.
2 Preparation 2 Preparation E While a product is being prepared, you can stop preparation at any time. Just press any button. E During preparation, you can change the preset amounts by turning the Rotary Switch g. E You can follow the current status of preparation on the display. Coffee tastes best served hot. A cold porcelain cup cools the beverage – and impairs the taste. We therefore recommend prewarming the cups. The full coffee aroma can develop only in prewarmed cups.
2 Preparation U The following additional products are shown in the product selector: U ‘Ristretto’ U ‘2 ristretti’ U ‘2 espressi’ U ‘2 coffees’ U ‘Special coffee’ In coffee à la carte mode: Briefly press the Rotary Switch once to enter ‘coffee à la carte’ mode. In this mode you can select the coffee strength and amounts before preparation. E The machine will exit from the product selector and ‘coffee à la carte’ mode automatically after 5 seconds if no preparation is started.
2 Preparation Preparation in ‘coffee à la carte’ mode Briefly press the Rotary Switch once to enter ‘coffee à la carte’ mode. In this mode you can select the coffee strength and amounts before preparation. E The settings made in ‘coffee à la carte’ mode are one-off settings and are not stored. E The machine will exit ‘coffee à la carte’ mode automatically after 5 seconds if no preparation is started. E You cannot prepare double products in ‘coffee à la carte’ mode.
2 Preparation Special coffee Example: Proceed as follows to prepare a special coffee using the product selector. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. T Place a cup under the cappuccino frother. g T Turn the Rotary Switch to view the product selector. g T Turn the Rotary Switch until the ‘Special coffee’ product is in focus. k T Press the Rotary Switch to start preparation. Preparation starts. The preset amount of water for special coffee flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically.

To ensure that the cappuccino frother always works properly, you must clean it daily when you have been preparing milk (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the cappuccino frother’). Your IMPRESSA will not prompt you to clean the cappuccino frother.
2 Preparation E If you did not fill the machine with a sufficient amount of ground coffee, ‘Not enough ground coffee.’ is displayed and the IMPRESSA stops the operation. E The desired speciality coffee must be prepared within approximately one minute after filling with the ground coffee. Otherwise the IMPRESSA stops the operation and is once more ready for use. All speciality coffees with ground coffee are prepared following this model. Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one coffee using ground coffee.
2 Preparation T Place a cup under the coffee spout. T Press and hold the ‘Coffee’ button. ‘Coffee’ and the fill volume are displayed. T Hold the ‘Coffee’ button down until ‘Enough coffee? Press button.’ appears. T Release the ‘Coffee’ button. Preparation starts and the coffee flows into the cup. T Press any button as soon as there is sufficient coffee in the cup. Preparation stops. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. The set amount of water for one coffee is permanently stored.
2 Preparation Hot water The following temperatures can be selected for preparing hot water: ‘Normal’, ‘High’, ‘Low’. J CAUTION There is a danger of scalding from hot water splashes. T Avoid direct contact with the skin. Example: Proceed as follows to prepare hot water. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. T Place a cup under the hot-water spout. T Press the ‘Hot water’ button. ‘Hot water’ and the temperature are displayed.
3 3 Daily operation Daily operation Daily maintenance of the machine and hygiene when handling milk, coffee and water are key to a perfect coffee result in the cup every time. You should therefore change the water daily. Switching on When the IMPRESSA is switched on, it automatically prompts you to perform the switch-on rinse. Start the switch-on rinse by pressing the Rotary Switch k. In programming mode you can change this setting so that the machine starts the switch-on rinse automatically.
3 Daily operation T Wipe the surface of the machine with a clean, soft, damp cloth (e.g. microfibre cloth). E In the interests of hygiene, we recommend changing the milk pipe on a regular basis (approx. every 6 months). Replacement pipes are available from specialised dealers. Switching off When you switch your IMPRESSA off, the spouts used to prepare a speciality coffee are rinsed. T Place one receptacle under the coffee spout and another under the cappuccino frother. Q T Press the On/Off button.

T Continue until ‘My coffee’ is displayed. T Press the ‘Save’ button to confirm the product name. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘My coffee’ O T Press the P button to exit programming mode.

T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Machine settings (4/7)’ T Press the P button to exit programming mode. ‘Please select product:’ By instructing your IMPRESSA to automatically switch itself off, you can cut down your energy consumption.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode Language In the programme item ‘Machine settings (4/7)’ / ‘Choose language’ you can select the language used by your IMPRESSA. E If you choose the wrong language by mistake, you can easily reset the machine to ‘Deutsch’: Press the P button to enter programming mode. Use the Rotary Switch g to select programme item ‘4/7’ and then press the top left-hand button. Example: Proceed as follows to change the language from ‘English’ to ‘Deutsch’.

4 Unit for amount of water Permanent settings in programming mode In the programme item ‘Machine settings (5/7)’ / ‘Units’ you can select the unit used for the amount of water. Example: Proceed as follows to change the unit for the amount of water from ‘ml’ to ‘oz’. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/7)’ g T Turn the Rotary Switch until the programme item ‘Machine settings (5/7)’ is displayed. T Press the ‘Units’ button.

5 Maintenance Rinsing the cappuccino frother After each milk preparation, the IMPRESSA prompts you to rinse the milk system. Precondition: ‘Rinse the milk system.’ is displayed and the Rotary Switch lights up. T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘Milk system is being rinsed.’, the cappuccino frother is rinsed. The rinse stops automatically. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display.
5 Maintenance T Place another receptacle under the cappuccino frother. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Milk system is being cleaned.’, the cappuccino frother and the milk pipe are cleaned. ‘Water for cleaning milk system.’ T Rinse the receptacle thoroughly, fill it with 250 ml of fresh water and immerse the milk pipe in the water. T Empty the other receptacle and place it under the cappuccino frother again. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Milk system is being cleaned.
5 Maintenance Inserting and activating the filter Your IMPRESSA no longer has to be descaled if you are using the CLARIS Blue filter cartridge. If you did not activate the filter cartridge the first time you used the machine, you can do this now as follows. E Perform the ‘inserting the filter’ operation without any interruptions. This will ensure that your IMPRESSA always produces its best. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. O T Press the P button.
5 Maintenance E You can interrupt rinsing of the filter at any time by pressing any button. Press the Rotary Switch k to continue rinsing of the filter. E The water may be slightly discoloured. This is not harmful to health and does not affect the taste. Rinsing of the filter stops automatically after approximately 500 ml. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display. The filter is now activated. Changing the filter E After 50 litres of water have flowed through, the filter will cease to work.
5 Maintenance T Insert the new filter cartridge into the water tank, exerting slight pressure. T Close the filter holder. It will click into place audibly. E After two months, the filter will cease to work. Set the date on the date plate on the filter holder in the water tank. T Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the tank. T Place a receptacle (at least 500 ml) under the cappuccino frother. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Filter is being rinsed.
5 Maintenance Precondition: ‘Clean machine.’ is displayed and the P button lights up. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/7)’ T Press the ‘Clean’ button. ‘Approximate duration 20 min.’ T Press the ‘Start’ button. ‘Use only original JURA maintenance products!’ T Press the ‘Start’ button again. ‘Empty coffee grounds container.’ T Empty the drip tray and coffee grounds container and put them back into the machine. ‘Press the Rotary Switch.’, the Rotary Switch lights up.
5 Maintenance Descaling the machine The IMPRESSA builds up deposits of limescale over time and automatically prompts you to descale it when necessary. The degree of calcification depends on the hardness of your water. J CAUTION If the descaling agent comes into contact with the skin or eyes, this can cause irritation. T Avoid contact with the skin or eyes. T Rinse off the descaling agent with clean water. Should you get any descaling agent in your eye, see a doctor.
5 Maintenance T Completely dissolve the contents of one blister (3 JURA descaling tablets) in a receptacle holding 600 ml of water. This may take several minutes. T Pour the solution into the empty water tank and insert it into the machine. ‘Press the Rotary Switch.’, the Rotary Switch lights up. T Carefully pull the cappuccino frother down and off. T Place one receptacle under the connector of the cappuccino frother and another under the hot-water spout. k T Press the Rotary Switch.
5 Maintenance Cleaning the bean container Coffee beans may be covered with a slight oil film which remains on the walls of the bean container. These traces may negatively affect the coffee result. For this reason clean the bean container from time to time. Precondition: ‘Fill bean container.’ is displayed. Q T Switch the machine off with the On/Off button. 3 T Switch the machine off at the power switch. T Open the bean container cover and remove the aroma preservation cover.
6 Display messages 6 Display messages Message ‘Fill water tank.’ Cause/Result The water tank is empty. You cannot prepare any products. ‘Empty coffee grounds container.’ The coffee grounds container is full. You cannot prepare any products. T Empty the coffee grounds container and the drip tray (see Chapter 3 ‘Daily operation – Daily maintenance’). ‘Coffee grounds container not fitted.’ ‘Empty drip tray.’ The coffee grounds container is not fitted. You cannot prepare any products.

7 7 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Problem When preparing a latte macchiato, the typical three layers do not form. Cause/Result – Insufficient foam is produced when the milk is frothed or milk sprays from the cappuccino frother. The cappuccino frother is dirty. T Clean the cappuccino frother (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the cappuccino frother’). T Dismantle and rinse the cappuccino frother (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Dismantling and rinsing the cappuccino frother’).
7 Troubleshooting Problem ‘Empty drip tray.’ is always displayed. ‘Fill water tank.’ is displayed although the water tank is full. Little or no water or steam comes out of the cappuccino frother. The pump is very quiet. Cause/Result The metal contacts of the drip tray are dirty or wet. The water tank float is trapped. Action T Clean and dry the metal contacts on the back of the drip tray. T Descale the water tank (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Descaling the water tank’).

It should be used to protect the machine during transport. In order to protect the IMPRESSA from frost during transport, the system must be emptied. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. T Carefully pull the cappuccino frother down and off.
