Important information Important information Proper use The machine is designed and intended for private domestic use. It should only be used for coffee preparation and to heat milk and water. Use for any other purpose will be deemed improper. JURA Elektroapparate AG cannot accept any responsibility for the consequences of improper use. Before using the machine read these instructions for use thoroughly and completely and comply with the instructions they contain.
Important information U U Never open and repair the machine yourself. Do not modify the machine in any way that is not described in these instructions for use. The machine contains live parts. If opened, there is a danger of potentially fatal injury. Repairs may only be carried out by authorised JURA service centres, using original spare parts and accessories.
Important information U U U U U U U U U U U U 8 Do not put the JURA or any individual parts in the dishwasher. Switch your JURA off at the power switch before any cleaning operation. Always wipe the JURA with a damp cloth rather than a wet one, and protect it from prolonged exposure to water splash. On models with glass cup grille: Do not subject the glass cup grille to shock or impact. Only connect the machine to the mains voltage in accordance with the information on the rating plate.
Important information U Children aged 8 and over may only operate the machine without supervision if they have been instructed in how to use it safely. Children must be able to recognise and understand the potential dangers arising from incorrect use.

You will also find interesting and up-to-date information on your JURA and on every aspect of coffee. Setting up the machine When setting up your JURA, please note the following: Place the JURA on a horizontal surface that is not sensitive to water.
1 Preparing and using for the first time T Remove any dirt or foreign objects from inside the bean container. T Fill the bean container with coffee beans, then close the aroma preservation cover and the bean container cover. First-time use J WARNING If the machine is operated with a defective mains cable, there is a danger of potentially fatal electric shock. T Never use a machine which is damaged or has a defective mains cable. Precondition: The water tank and bean container have been filled.
1 Preparing and using for the first time Inserting and activating the filter Your JURA no longer has to be descaled if you are using the CLARIS Blue filter cartridge. If the water hardness is 10 °dH or more, we recommend using the filter cartridge. E If you do not know the hardness of your water, you must find this out first (see Chapter 1 ‘Preparing and using for the first time – Determining the water hardness’). E Perform the ‘inserting the filter’ operation without any interruptions.
1 Preparing and using for the first time T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Filter is being rinsed.’, water flows out of the cappuccino frother. E You can interrupt rinsing of the filter at any time by pressing any button. Press the Rotary Switch k to continue rinsing of the filter. E The water may be slightly discoloured. This is not harmful to health and does not affect the taste. Rinsing of the filter stops automatically after approximately 500 ml.
1 Preparing and using for the first time Setting the water hardness Connecting milk Example: Proceed as follows to change the water hardness from ‘16 °dH’ to ‘25 °dH’. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/6)’ g T Turn the Rotary Switch until the programme item ‘Maintenance settings (3/6)’ is displayed. T Press the ‘Water hardness’ button. ‘Water hardness’ T Press the ‘ < ’ or ‘ > ’ button to set the water hardness. T Press the ‘Save’ button.
2 Preparation 2 Preparation E While a speciality coffee or hot water is being prepared, you can stop preparation at any time. Just press any button. E During the grinding operation you can select the coffee strength of single products by turning the Rotary Switch g: ; (extra-mild), ;; (mild), ;;; (normal), ;;;; (strong) or ;;;;; (extra-strong). E During preparation, you can change the preset amount of water by turning the Rotary Switch g or pressing the ‘ < ’ and ‘ > ’ buttons.
2 Preparation Espresso and coffee ‘Espresso’ and ‘Coffee’ are prepared following this model. Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one coffee. T Place a cup under the coffee spout. T Press the ‘Coffee’ button. Preparation starts. The preset amount of water for coffee flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display.
2 Preparation T Place a glass under the cappuccino frother. T Turn the setting wheel of the cappuccino frother to the Milk Foam position ü. T Press the ‘Latte macchiato’ button. ‘Latte macchiato’, the milk foam is prepared. Preparation stops automatically when the preset amount of milk is reached. E There is a short interval while the hot milk separates from the milk foam. This allows the typical layers of a latte macchiato to form.
2 Preparation To ensure that the cappuccino frother always works properly, you must clean it daily when you have been preparing milk (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the cappuccino frother’). Ground coffee You can choose to use a second coffee variety, for example decaffeinated coffee, with the filter funnel for ground coffee. E Never add more than two level measuring spoons of ground coffee. E Use ground coffee which is not ground too finely.
2 Preparation Permanently setting the amount of water for the cup size It is easy to permanently adjust the amount of water for all products to the cup size. Adjust the amount once as shown in the following example. Every time you prepare a drink in the future, this amount will be dispensed. The permanent settings for adapting the amount of water to the cup size for all speciality coffees and hot water follow this model. Example: Proceed as follows to permanently set the amount of water for one coffee.
2 Preparation The consistency of grind is correct if the coffee flows regularly from the coffee spout. In addition a fine, thick crema forms. Example: Proceed as follows to change the consistency of grind during the preparation of an espresso. T Open the storage compartment cover. T Place a cup under the coffee spout. T Press the ‘Espresso’ button. The grinder starts up. ‘Espresso’ is displayed. T Turn the grinder adjustment switch to the desired position while the grinder is running.
3 3 Daily operation Daily operation Switching on the machine When the JURA is switched on, it automatically prompts you to perform the switch-on rinse. Start the switch-on rinse by pressing the Rotary Switch k. In programming mode you can change this setting so that the machine starts the switch-on rinse automatically (see Chapter 4 ‘Permanent settings in programming mode – Maintenance settings’). Precondition: Your JURA is switched on at the power switch. T Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
3 Daily operation Regular maintenance Carry out the following maintenance actions regularly or as required: In the interests of hygiene, we recommend changing the milk pipe on a regular basis (approximately every 3 months). Replacement pipes are available from specialised dealers (JURA original accessory set for frothers). Clean the inside of the water tank, e.g. with a brush.

T Press the ‘ < ’ or ‘ > ’ button to change setting for the interval to ‘40 sec.’. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode Example: Proceed as follows to make the machine prompt you to rinse the milk system immediately after preparing a speciality coffee with milk. Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/6)’ g T Turn the Rotary Switch until the programme item ‘Maintenance settings (3/6)’ is displayed. T Press the ‘Rinse the milk system’ button. ‘Rinse the milk system’ T Press the ‘Immediate’ button. T Press the ‘Save’ button.
4 O Automatic switch-off Permanent settings in programming mode T Press the ‘Save energy’ button. ‘Save energy’ T Press the ‘Active’ button. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Machine settings 1 (4/6)’ T Press the P button to exit programming mode. ‘Please select product:’ By instructing your JURA to automatically switch itself off, you can cut down your energy consumption.

T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Machine settings 1 (4/6)’ O T Press the P button to exit programming mode.
4 O Language Permanent settings in programming mode T Press the ‘Espresso’ button. ‘Espresso’ / ‘Reset this product to the factory setting?’ T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Factory setting’ T Press the P button to exit programming mode. ‘Please select product:’ In this programme item you can set the language used by your JURA. E If you choose the wrong language by mistake, you can easily reset the machine to ‘English’: Press the P button to enter programming mode.
4 Permanent settings in programming mode O T Press the ‘Colour scheme’ button. ‘Colour scheme’ T Press the ‘ < ’ or ‘ > ’ button to change the setting. T Press the ‘Save’ button. ‘Saved’ appears briefly on the display. ‘Machine settings 2 (5/6)’ T Press the P button to exit programming mode. ‘Please select product:’ E The selected background colour only applies on the selection page of the display showing the speciality coffees.
5 5 Maintenance Maintenance Your JURA has the following integrated maintenance programmes: Rinsing the machine (‘Switch-on rinse’) Rinsing the cappuccino frother (‘Rinse the milk system’) Cleaning the cappuccino frother (‘Clean the milk system’) Changing the filter (‘Change the filter’) Cleaning the machine (‘Clean’) Descaling the machine (‘Descale’) U U U U U U E Clean or descale the machine, rinse the milk system or change the filter when you are prompted to do so.
5 Maintenance Rinsing the cappuccino frother After each milk preparation, the JURA prompts you to perform a milk system rinse. Precondition: ‘Rinse the milk system’ is displayed. T Place a receptacle under the cappuccino frother. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘Milk system is being rinsed.’, water flows out of the cappuccino frother. The rinse stops automatically. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display.
5 Maintenance T Empty the other receptacle and place it under the cappuccino frother again. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Milk system is being cleaned.’, the cappuccino frother and the pipe are rinsed with fresh water. ‘Please select product:’ appears on the display. Dismantling and rinsing the cappuccino frother To make sure the cappuccino frother works properly, and in the interests of hygiene, it must be dismantled and rinsed daily if you have been preparing milk.
5 Maintenance E If you do not want to start changing the filter just yet, press the ‘’ button. The prompt ‘Change filter’ remains active. T Press the ‘Next’ button. ‘Change filter’ T Remove and empty the water tank. T Open the filter holder and remove the old CLARIS Blue filter cartridge and filter extension. T Fit the filter extension on top of a new filter cartridge. T Insert the filter cartridge into the water tank, exerting slight pressure. T Close the filter holder. It will click into place audibly.
5 Maintenance E The cleaning programme lasts approximately 20 minutes. E Do not interrupt the cleaning programme. The quality of cleaning will be impaired if you do so. E JURA cleaning tablets are available from specialised dealers. Precondition: ‘Clean machine’ is displayed. O T Press the P button. ‘Maintenance status (1/6)’ T Press the ‘Clean’ button. ‘Clean’ E If you do not want to start cleaning just yet, press the ‘’ button. The prompt ‘Clean machine’ remains active. T Press the ‘Next’ button.
5 Maintenance Descaling the machine The JURA builds up deposits of limescale over time and automatically prompts you to descale it when necessary. The degree of calcification depends on the hardness of your water. J CAUTION If the descaling agent comes into contact with the skin or eyes, this can cause irritation. T Avoid contact with the skin or eyes. T Rinse off the descaling agent with clean water. Should you get any descaling agent in your eye, see a doctor.
5 Maintenance T Remove and empty the water tank. T Completely dissolve 3 JURA descaling tablets in a receptacle holding 500 ml of water. This may take several minutes. T Pour the solution into the empty water tank and insert it into the machine. ‘Please press the Rotary Switch.’ T Carefully pull the cappuccino frother down and off. T Place a receptacle under the connector of the cappuccino frother. k T Press the Rotary Switch. ‘Machine is being descaled.
5 Maintenance Cleaning the bean container Coffee beans may be covered with a slight oil film which remains on the walls of the bean container. These traces may negatively affect the coffee result. For this reason clean the bean container from time to time. Precondition: ‘Fill bean container’ is displayed. Q T Switch the machine off with the On/Off button. 3 T Switch the machine off at the power switch. T Open the bean container cover and remove the aroma preservation cover.
6 Display messages 6 Display messages Message ‘Fill water tank’ ‘Empty coffee grounds container’ Cause/Result Action The water tank is empty. T Fill the water tank (see Chapter 1 You cannot prepare any products. ‘Preparing and using for the first time – Filling the water tank’). The coffee grounds container is T Empty the coffee grounds container full. You cannot prepare any and the drip tray (see Chapter 3 ‘Daily products. operation – Daily maintenance’). ‘Empty drip tray’ The drip tray is full.
7 Troubleshooting 7 Troubleshooting Problem When preparing a latte macchiato, the typical three layers do not form. Cause/Result – Insufficient foam is produced when the milk is frothed or milk sprays from the cappuccino frother. The cappuccino frother is dirty. T Clean the cappuccino frother (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Cleaning the cappuccino frother’). T Check that the air intake pipe is fitted on the cappuccino frother. T Rinse or replace the air intake pipe.
7 Troubleshooting Problem ‘Fill water tank’ is displayed although the water tank is full. Cause/Result The water tank float is trapped. Little or no water or steam comes out of the cappuccino frother. The pump is very quiet. The connector of the cappuccino frother may be blocked by milk residues or limescale fragments loosened during descaling. T Remove the cappuccino frother. T Unscrew the black connector with the aid of the hexagonal hole on the measuring spoon for ground coffee.

Precondition: ‘Please select product:’ is displayed. T Carefully pull the cappuccino frother down and off. T Place a receptacle under the connector of the cappuccino frother. T Press the ‘1 portion milk’ button. ‘Machine is heating.
