Getting Started VCR For TV and video format STB (Set Top Box) When the TV is equipped with the plural SCART terminals, refer to the manual supplied with the TV to check the available video signals for each terminal, then connect SCART cable correctly. TV This unit cannot convert the video signals (S-video or Composite). When the video signal of one video component is different from that of the other (for example, one is S-video, the other is Composite), you may not see the pictures appropriately.

Basic Operations Selecting the Analog or Digital Input Mode When you have connected digital source components using both the analog connection and the digital connection methods (see pages 7 to 10), you can select the input mode. • Before selecting the digital input mode, register the digital input terminal setting correctly (see “Digital input (DIGITAL IN) terminals” on page 25). 1 Press one of the source selecting buttons (STB, TV, or CDR) for which you want to change the input mode.
Basic Operations Attenuating the Input Signal Note: When the input level of the analog source is too high, the sounds will be distorted. If this happens, you need to attenuate the input signal level to prevent the sound distortion. • You have to make this adjustment for each analog source. • Without changing the source name, you can still use the connected components.

RDS allows FM stations to send an additional signal along with their regular program signals. Creating Realistic Sound Fields The following DAP modes are provided for this unit: ■ All Channel Stereo LIVE CLUB This mode can reproduce a larger stereo sound field using all the connected (and activated) speakers. • You cannot select All Channel Stereo when playing back DVD AUDIO. : Gives the feeling of a live music club with a low ceiling. DANCE CLUB : Gives a throbbing bass beat. HALL : Gives clear vocal and the feeling of a concert hall.
Creating Realistic Sound Fields Activating Surround Mode Selecting Surround Modes When Auto Surround is set to “OFF” or 2-channel source other than Dolby Surround software is played back, activate Surround mode manually. Make sure that you have set the speakers information correctly (see page 24 or 57). • If only front speakers are connected, you cannot activate any Surround mode. On the front panel: Press SURROUND ON/OFF.

DVD Player Operations Disc Information 7 Playable Disc Types This unit has been designed to play back the following discs: DVD VIDEO, DVD AUDIO, Video CD (VCD), Super Video CD (SVCD), audio CD, CD-R, and CD-RW. • This unit can also play back MP3 and JPEG files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW. For details about MP3, see “MP3 Disc Playback” on pages 49 and 50 and about JPEG, see “JPEG Disc Playback” on pages 51 and 52. • This instruction refers to Video CD as VCD, Super Video CD as SVCD, and audio CD as CD.
DVD Player Operations 7 Disc structure DVD VIDEO consists of “titles,” and each title may be divided into some “chapters” (see Example 1). For example, if DVD VIDEO contains some movies, each movie may have its own title number and it may be further divided into some chapters. In DVD VIDEO Karaoke, each song may have its own title number, but it may not be further divided into chapters. DVD AUDIO consists of “groups,” and each group may be divided into some “tracks” (see Example 2).

(After loading such a disc, “PBC” appears on the display.) You can locate the specific track by using the menu (see also page 34).

When DVD VIDEO/DVD AUDIO contains audio languages (soundtrack), you can select the language (soundtrack) to listen to.

DVD Player Operations 7 7 Selecting a still picture Most DVD AUDIO include still pictures, which usually appear in turn automatically during playback according to the playback sequence. You can change the picture (turn the page) manually when the current still picture has selectable pages.
MP3 Disc Playback This unit can play back MP3 files on a CD-R or CD-RW. We call such a disc “MP3 disc” in this instruction. • Before using the remote control, press DVD to change the remote control operation mode for the MP3 disc operations. • Turn on your TV and select the correct input mode on the TV. If “ ” appears on the TV when you press a button, the disc cannot accept an operation you have tried to do. What is MP3? MP3 is an abbreviation of Motion Picture Experts Group 1 (or MPEG-1) Audio Layer 3.
P3 Disc Playback Operations through the MP3 CONTROL Screen You can search for and play the desired groups and tracks through the MP3 CONTROL screen shown on TV. 7 MP3 CONTROL screen To start playback by specifying a track number Press the number buttons (1 – 10, +10) to enter the track number. JPEG Disc Playback This unit can play back JPEG files on a CD-R or CD-RW. JPEG Disc Playback Notes: • The following functions are not available to the slide-show playback: program playback, random playback, repeat playback, fast-forward/ reverse playback, on-screen bar, and choice menus. • If a black screen continuously appears in the slide-show playback: the file currently played may be non-baseline JPEG file. In this case, select a playable file (a baseline JPEG file) again (e.g., pressing 7 or MENU to open the JPEG CONTROL screen, etc.).

You can restrict playback of DVD VIDEO containing violent scenes and those not suitable for your family members. Nobody can play such a disc unless this function is canceled. • This setting takes effect only for the DVD VIDEO containing the Parental Lock level information—Level 1 (most restrictive) to Level 8 (least restrictive).

Maintenance To get the best performance of the system, keep your discs and mechanism clean. General Notes Cleaning Discs In general, you will have the best performance by keeping your discs and mechanism clean. • Store discs in their cases, and keep them in cabinets or on shelves. Wipe the disc with a soft cloth in a straight line from center to edge. Handling Discs • Remove the disc from its case by holding it at the edge while pressing the center hole lightly.
Troubleshooting Use this chart to help you solve daily operational problems. If there is any problem you cannot solve, contact your dealer. 7 Genaral PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION The power does not come on. The power cord is not plugged in. Plug the power cord into an AC outlet. No sound from speakers. Speaker signal cables are not connected. Check speaker wiring and reconnect if necessary. The audio cable is not connected properly. Connect the cord properly (see pages 7 to 10).
Troubleshooting 7 For DVD Player PROBLEM No picture is displayed on the TV. POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTION The SCART cable is not connected correctly. Connect the cord correctly (see pages 9 and 10). TV input selection is incorrect. Select the correct input on the TV. The disc is not playable. Replace the disc (see page 33). No sound is heard and “NO AUDIO” appears on the display. The loaded disc may be illegally copied. Consult with the disc vendor. A disc cannot be played.
Troubleshooting 7 For Tuner PROBLEM Hard to listen to broadcast because of noise. Continuous hiss or buzzing during FM reception. POSSIBLE CAUSE The AM loop antenna is too close to the unit. The supplied FM antenna is not properly extended and positioned. Incoming signal is too weak. The station is too far away. An incorrect antenna is used. Occasional cracking noise during FM reception. 7 Antennas are not connected properly. Ignition noise from automobiles.
