shouldnever bestored or usedinthe sameroom or area con-
taininga gaswaterheateror otheropenflameor sparkproduc-
ingappliance.

water heatersbe installedso that com6ustionand ventilation
air be takenfrom outsidetheseareas.Referto the "Facts to
ConsiderAbout the Location"sectionofthis manualand also
the latest editionofthe NationalFuelGasCode,ANSI Z223.1
alsoreferred to as NFPA 54 for specificsprovidedconcernin
air required.

At the time of manufacturethis water heater wasprovided
witha combinationtemperature-pressuresrelief valvecertified
bya nationallyrecognized testinglaboratorythat maintains
periodicinspectionof productionof listedequipmentor mate-
rials, as meeting the requirements for Relief Valves and
AutomaticGasShutoffDevicesfor Hot Water SupplySystems,
and the latest editionof ANSI Z21.22 and the code require-
mentsofASME. If replaced,the valvemustmeet therequire-
ments oflocalcodes,but notlessthan a combinationtempera-
ture and pressurerellef valvecertifiedasmeeting the require-
mentsfor ReliefValvesandAutomaticGasShutoffDevicesfor
Hot Water SupplySystems,ANSIZ21.22by a nationallyrecog-
nized testinglaboratorythat maintainsperiodicinspectionof
)roductionoflistedequipment or materials.
The valvemust be marked with a maximumset pressurenot
Ito exceedthe marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the
water heater(150Ibsdsq.in.) anda dischargecapacitynot less
thanthe water heater inputrateas shownon the modelrating
plate.(Electric heaters- watts dividedby 1000x 3415equal
BTUIHr. rate.)
Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingthe useof a
temperature-pressurereliefvalvecomplyingwith ANSI Z21.22
and ASME, may requirea valvemodel differentfrom the one
furnishedwiththe waterheater.
Compliancewith suchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfiedby
the installeror enduserofthe water heaterwith a locallypre-
scribedtemperature-pressurereliefvalveinstallodin the desig-
nated openingin the water heater in placeofthe factoryfur_
nishedvalve.
Forsafeoperationof the water heater,the relief valvemustnot
beremovedfromit'sdesignatedopeningor plugged. I
The temperature-pressurerelief valvemustbe installeddirectly
intothe fittingofthewaterheaterdesignatedforthe reliefvalve.
Positionthevalvedownwardand providetubing sothat anydis-
chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at any distance
belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactismade
withanyliveelectricalpart.The dischargeopeningmustnot be
Mocked or reduced in sizeunderanycircumstances.Excessive
length,over30 feet,or useof more thanfourelbowscancause
restriction andreducethe dischargecapacityofthe valve.
No valveor otherobstructionisto be placedbetweenthe relief
valveandthe tank.Do not connecttubing directlyto discharge
drainunlessa6" airgapisprovided.Toprevantbodilyinjury,haz-
ardto life,or property damage, the reliefvalvemustbeallowed
to dischargewaterinquantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If
the dischargepipeisnot connectedto a drainor othersuitable
means,thewaterflowmaycausepropertydamage.
The DischargePipe:
• Mustnot be smallerin sizethan the outlet pipesizeofthe
valve,orhaveanyreducingcouplingsorother restrictions.
• Mustnotbe pluggedor blocked.
i: Mustbe ofmateriallistedfor hotwater distribution.
Musthe installedsoas to allow completedrainageof both
the temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the discharge
: pipe.
Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.
Mustnothaveany valvebetweenthe relief valveandtank.
