Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood panel
beneath the applianceextendingbeyondthe full width and
depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches(76.2mm) in any
direction,or if the appliance isinstalledin an alcoveor closet,
the entire floor must be coveredby the panel.Failureto heed
this warningmay result inafirehazard.

others,Theseincludethe elderly,children,the infirm,or physical-

foumusttakespecialprecautions.Inadditionto usingthe lowest
3ossibletemperaturesettingthat satisfiesyourhotwater needs,
meanssuchasa mixingvalve,shouldbeusedat the hotwater
tapsusedby thesepeopleor at thewater heater.Mixingvalves
areavailableatplumbingsupplyorhardwarestores.Followman°
ufacturersinstructionsfor installationof the valves.Before
changingthe factory setting on the thermostat, read the
'q'emperatureRegulation"sectioninthismanual.

AWARNING
VENT DAMPERS- Any ventdamper,whether it is operated
thermally or otherwisemustbe removedifitsuseinhibitsprep-
erdraftingofthe waterheater.
ThermallyOperated Vent Dampers:Gas-firedwater heaters
havingthermal efficiencyin excessof80%mayproducea rela-
tively lowfluegastemperature.Suchtemperaturesmaynot be
high enough to properly open thermally operated vent
damper_Thiswouldcausespillageof fluegasesandmaycause
carbonmonoxidepoisoning.
Ventdampersmustbear evidenceof certificationas complying
with the latestedition of American NationalStandardANSI
Z2h68 (ANSI Z2h66 & 67, respectively,coverelectricallyand
mechanicallyactuatedvent dampers).Beforeinstallationofany
ventdamper,consultyourlocalSearsServiceCenteror thegas
utilityfor further information.

The applianceand itsindividualshutoffvalvemustbe discon-
nectedfrom thegassupplypipingsystemduringanypressure
testingof the gassystemat test pressuresin excessof '/2
poundper squareinch(3.5kPa).
The appliancemustbe isolatedfromthe gassupplypipingsys-
tem by closingitsindividualmanualshutoffvalveduringany
pressuretestingofthe gassupplypipingsystemat test pres-
suresequalor lessthan _ poundper squareinch(3.5kPa).

BEFORELIGHTING PROPANE(LR) GAS WATERHEATERS:
Propane(I-R) gasisheavierthan air. Shouldthere be a leakin
the system,the gas will settle near the ground.Basements,
crawl spaces,skirted areasunder mobilehomes(even when
ventilated),closetsand areasbelowgroundlevelwill serveas
pocketsfor the accumulationof this gas.Beforeattemptingto
lightor relight the water heater'spilotor turningon a nearby
electricallightswitch,beabsolutelysurethereisnoaccumulat-
ed gasin the area.Searchfor odorof gasby miffing at ground
levelin thevicinityofthe appliance.If odor isdetected,follow
steps indicatedat "For YourSafety"onthe coverpageof this
manualthen leavethe premises.

Chemicalvapor corrosionof the flue and vent systemmay
occurif air for combustioncontainscertainchemicalvapors.
Spraycanpropellants,cleaningsolvents,refrigerator and air
conditionerrefrigerants, swimmingpool chemicals,calcium
andsodiumchloride,waxes,bleach,and processchemicalsare
typicalcompoundswhicharepotentially corrosive.
