2. Visuallyinspectthe sparkplug.Discardthe sparkplugifthereis
apparentwear,orif the insulatoris crackedor chipped.Cleanthe
sparkplugwitha wirebrush if it is to be reused.
3. Measurethe pluggapwitha feelergauge.Correctas necessary
by bendingsideelectrode.SeeFigure21.The gapshouldbeset
to 0.030in.

4. Checkthatthe sparkplugwasherisingoodconditionandthread
the sparkplugin by handto preventcrossthreading.
5. Afterthesparkplugisseated,tightenwitha sparkplugwrenchto
compressthe washer.
NOTE:Wheninstallinga newsparkplug,tighten1/2turnafterthe spark
plugseatstocompressthewasher.Whenreinstallinga usedsparkplug,
tighten1/8-1/4turnafterthesparkplugseatstocompressthewasher.
The sparkplugmustbe securelytightened.An improperlytightened
sparkplugcanbecomeveryhot andmaydamagethe engine.
Servicing the Air Cleaner
Neverusegasolineor lowflashpointsolventsfor cleaningtheair
cleanerelement.A fireor explosioncould result.
The aircleanerpreventsdamagingdirt,dust,etc.,fromenteringthe
carburetorandbeingforcedintothe engineandis importanttoengine
lifeandperformance.Neverrunthe enginewithoutanair cleaner
completelyassembled.Checkthe air cleanerbeforeeachuse.
Paperfilterscannotbecleanedand mustbereplacedoncea year
or every100operatinghours;moreoftenif usedinextremelydusty
conditions.

2. Openthe coverandremovethe pre-cleanerandairfilter.
3. Washthe pre-cleanerandallowto dry.
4. Discardoldair filter.
5. installnewair filterandwashedpre-cleaner.
6. Closethe coverandtightenthescrews.
NOTE:Ifthe filteristornor damagedinanyway,replaceit.
Cleaning the Engine
Do notsprayenginewithwatertocleanbecausewatercould
contaminatefuel.Usinga gardenhoseor pressurewashingequip-
mentcan alsoforcewaterintothe muffleropening.Waterthatpasses
throughthe mufflercan enterthe cylinder,causingdamage.
Accumulationof debrisaroundmufflercouldcausea fire. inspectand
clean beforeeveryuse.
Iftheenginehas beenrunning,allow it to coolfor at leasthalfanhour
beforecleaning.Periodicallyremovedirt build-upfromthe engine.
Cleanaroundthe muffler.Cleanwitha brushor compressedair.
