SET-UP Checking Fuel Recommendations and Adding Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedor lowleadedto minimizecombustion chamberdeposits)with a minimumof 87 octane.Gasolinewith up to 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButyl Ether)can be used. Neverusean oil/gasolinemixtureor dirty gasoline.Avoidgetting dirt, dust,or waterinthe fuel tank.DO NOTuse E85 gasoline. Oil Theengine is shippedwithoutoil in theengine.Youmustfill the enginewith oil beforeoperating.
Transmission/Gear Oil First Time Use 1. With thetiller on levelground,pull the DepthRegulatorLever back and thenall the way up untilthe lowestnotch in the leveris engaged.See Figure8. To move tiller in reverse: (Do not till in reverse) a. Releasethe ForwardClutchBail. Toadjustthesideshields,removethewingnuts.Movethesideshieldto the desiredpositionand replacethewingnuts.Tightensecurely.SeeFigure13. f b. Lift the handlebaruntilthe tinesare off the ground. c. Slowlypull backon the ReverseLever,and carefullywalk backwardswiththe machine. --- NOTE:In reversemode,the tineswill rotateforward. d.
CLEARING THE TINES Beforeclearingthetines by hand,stop theengine,allowall moving parts to stop and disconnectthe sparkplug wire. Failureto followthis warningcouldresult in personalinjury. * Thetines havea self-clearingaction whicheliminatesmostof the tanglingof debris. However,occasionallydry grass,stringystalks or tough vinesmay becometangled.Followthese proceduresto help avoidtanglingand to clearthe tines, ifnecessary.
If the gardensize will notpermit lengthwiseand thencrosswise tilling, thenoverlapthe first passesby one-halfa tiller width,followedby successivepassesat one-quarterwidth.See Figure18. Beforeperforminganytypeof maintenance/service, disengageall controlsand stoptheengine.Waituntilall movingpartshavecometo a completestop.Disconnectsparkplugwireandgrounditagainstthe enginetopreventunintendedstarting.
Removethespark plug bootand use a sparkplug wrenchto removethe plug.See Figure20. Servicing the Air Cleaner Neverusegasolineor lowflash point solventsfor cleaningtheair cleanerelement.A fireor explosioncould result. The air cleanerpreventsdamagingdirt, dust,etc., from enteringthe carburetorand being forcedintothe engineand is importantto engine lifeand performance.Neverrunthe enginewithoutan air cleaner completelyassembled.Checkthe air cleanerbeforeeachuse.
To Drain Oil Check Engine Oil 1. Checkoil beforeeachuse. Stopengineand wait severalminutes beforecheckingoil level.With the tilleron levelground,the oil mustbe to FULLmarkon dipstick. 2. 3. Removeoil fill dipstickand wipe cleanwith cloth. Replacedipstick intothe oil filler neck,but do not screwitin. Removeand checkoil level. Levelshouldbe at FULLmark. 4. 5. If needed,add oil slowly- recheck.Do not overfill. Wipedipstickclean, replacebut do not tighten.Removeand checkoil level.
Check Transmission Gear Oil LUBRICATION Checkthetransmissiongear oil after every 30 hoursof operation or wheneveryou noticeanyoil leak. Operatingthe tiller whenthe transmissionis lowon oil can resultin severedamage. ToCheckthe TransmissionGearOil Level: After every 10operatinghours,oil or greasethe lubricationpoints.Use clean lubricatingoil (#30 weight motoroil is suitable)and cleangeneral purposegrease(greasecontaininga metal lubricantis preferred,if available).See Figure26. 1.
BELT REPLACEMENT . If the drive beltor reversebeltneedsto be replaced,itis bestto replacebothbeltsat the same time.Use onlya factoryauthorized beltas an "over-the-counter"beltmay not performsatisfactorily. The procedurerequiresaveragemechanicalability and commonly availabletools. To replacethe Driveand Reversebelts,follow thesesteps: 1. 2. Removethe idler bracketextensionspring.See Figure29. It is recommendedto usea pair of needle-nosedpliers,and grab the springby the end that hooksoverthe frame.
6. Removethehex bolts securingthe transmissiondrivepulley,then removethe pulleyalongwith the two belts. See Figure31. F Removing/Installing a Tine Assembly 1. Removethe tine shieldend coversand side shieldsby removing the threewing nutson eachside that securethem. V-side out Remove , he× bolt 2. A fine assemblyconsistsof a left handtine and a righthand fine. NOTE:The tineassemblymovesin a counter-rotatingmotionwith the sharpedgesof the tines positionedto enterthe soilfirst when counter-rotating.
Neverstoretiller withfuel in tank indoorsor in poorlyventilatedareasI wherefuel fumesmay reachan open flame,spark,or pilotlightas on a furnace,water heater,c othesdryer, or gas app ance. PREPARING THE ENGINE Enginesstored between30 and 90 days needto be treatedwith a gasolinestabilizerand enginesstoredover90 days needto be drained of fuel to preventdeteriorationand gumfrom formingin fuel systemor on essentialcarburetorparts.
Beforeperforminganytype d maintenance/service, disengageall controlsand stoptheengine.Waituntilall movingpartshavecometo a completestop.Disconnectsparkplugwireandgroundit againsttheenginetoprevent unintendedstarting.Alwayswearsafetyglassesduringoperationor whileperforminganyadjustmentsor repairs. 1.
