1 Getting Started What Can I Do With My KODAK EASYSHARE DX3900 Zoom Digital Camera? Take great pictures with 3.1 Megapixel resolution —in Capture mode, use the default settings for easy point-and-shoot picture-taking, or get the images you want by adjusting the camera settings—ISO levels, white balance, and more. Review —in Review mode, display your pictures on the LCD screen. Keep only the ones you want, magnify, protect, or run a slide show of all the pictures in your camera.

Chapter 1 Loading the Batteries A KODAK Lithium Battery, KCRV3 or 2, AA lithium batteries are included with your camera.* To load the batteries: 1 Turn off the camera. 2 On the bottom of the camera, slide the battery door in the direction of the arrow, then lift to open. 3 Insert the batteries as shown below. 4 Close the battery door.
Chapter 1 Inserting a Picture Card Think of Picture Cards as removable and reusable film, or removable computer memory. Picture Cards, also called memory cards, provide easy picture storage and transfer. See page 82 for Picture Card storage capacities. Picture Card To insert a Picture Card: access light 1 Turn off the camera. 2 Slide the Picture Card door in the direction of the arrow on the door, then pivot open.
Chapter 1 Turning the Camera On and Off 1 To turn on the camera, slide the power switch to the On ( | ) position. The built-in lens cover opens and the Status Display turns on. If the Mode dial is set to Capture ( ), the lens is extended. 2 To turn off the camera, slide the power switch to the Off ( ) position. NOTE: The camera safely completes any Save, Delete, or Copy operations that are in process when the power is turned off.
Chapter 1 Checking the Batteries Check the battery power level in the Status Display before you begin taking pictures. Don’t miss an important picture because the camera batteries are low or exhausted. 1 Turn on the camera. 2 Check the battery symbol that appears in the Status Display. If no symbol appears, your battery is fully charged. Low —batteries soon need to be replaced or recharged. Exhausted (blinking) — batteries are too weak to power the camera. Replace or recharge the batteries.
Chapter 1 Setting the Clock The camera has a built-in clock that maintains the date and time in a 24-hour format. If the battery is removed from the camera for an extended period of time, or is exhausted, you may need to reset the clock. NOTE: It is important to set the correct date and time if you want to imprint the date on your pictures (page 29). 1 With the camera turned on, turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Date & Time menu, then press Select.
Chapter 1 Mode Dial—Settings and Menus Use the Mode dial to access three ways to use your camera: Mode dial Capture —take pictures and change picture-taking options Review —view and work with your pictures on the LCD screen Setup —customize your camera functions Capture Menus Menu 8 To access the Capture mode menus: 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture . 2 Press the Menu button. 3 Use the arrow buttons to scroll through the menus and submenus. 4 Press the Select button.
Chapter 1 Review Menus To access the Review mode menus: 1 Turn the Mode dial to Review . 2 Press the Menu button. 3 Use the arrow buttons to scroll through the menus and submenus. 4 Press the Select button.
Chapter 1 Setup Menus To access the Setup mode menus: 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . The Setup menu screen is displayed on the LCD. 2 Use the arrow buttons to scroll through the menus and submenus. 3 Press the Select button.
Chapter 1 Navigating Through the Menus The method of moving through the menus and selecting options is the same in all three camera modes. To display the menus on the LCD screen: m In Capture , and Review modes, press the Menu button. In Review mode, the menus are displayed on the screen with a picture. W T m In Setup mode, the menus are automatically displayed when you turn the Mode dial to Setup. The name of the selected menu is displayed at the top of the screen.
2 Taking Pictures Before you take pictures, make sure there is a Picture Card in the camera, the Mode dial is turned to Capture , and the camera is on. Taking a Picture 1 Center the subject in the viewfinder or use Shutter button Viewfinder Preview (page 15). 2 Press the Shutter button half-way to lock in the auto-focus and exposure. The viewfinder light glows green. 3 Press the Shutter button completely down to take the picture. The green Picture Card access light flashes.
Chapter 2 Viewing and Deleting the Last Picture When you take a picture, Automatic QuickView displays the picture on the LCD screen for several seconds. While the picture is displayed, you can decide to keep it or delete it. This feature is ideal for verifying picture information. 1 Take a picture. It immediately appears in the LCD screen with the Delete icon and the appropriate picture status icons. 2 To delete the picture while it is displayed, press the arrow button.
Chapter 2 Previewing Your Picture If you want to see what a picture looks like before it is taken, you can preview a live image on the LCD screen. With Preview activated, use the LCD instead of the viewfinder to frame your picture. NOTE: Preview is required when you are using digital zooming (page 18). aperture shutter speed digital zoom 1 Press the Select button. The LCD displays a live image and icons for the activated camera settings. 2 Center the subject on the LCD.
Chapter 2 Shooting a Burst Series of Pictures The Burst feature allows you to take up to 8 pictures in quick succession. When you shoot with the Burst feature, the Flash and the Self Timer features are disabled. Burst is available in the Picture Quality menu (page 24). NOTE: Burst is ideal for taking pictures of sporting events or for recording moving objects. Turn On Burst 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the Quality menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the 0.
Chapter 2 Shooting Distant and Close-Up Pictures Use the Close-Up/Distant button to take pictures of scenes that are either very close or very far away. To choose the setting: 1 Set the Mode dial to Capture . 2 Press the Close-Up/Distant button repeatedly until the appropriate icon appears in the Status Display on top of the camera. 3 Press the Shutter button half-way to lock the auto-focus and exposure. 4 Press the Shutter button all the way down to take the picture.
Chapter 2 Using Zoom Your camera offers optical and digital zoom features. Use optical zoom to get up to two times closer (2X) to your subject. Then, to get even closer, use digital zoom for an additional 3X. In optical zoom, the camera lens extends or retracts as you push the zoom buttons. When you turn on the camera, the lens extends toward the W position. Digital zoom is accomplished with camera image processing; the lens does not move. Preview is required for digital zoom.
Chapter 2 Using the Flash When you take pictures at night, indoors, or outdoors in heavy shadows, your pictures may need flash. The camera flash is effective at the following distances, depending on your zoom position. Zoom position (at ISO 140) Effective flash—distance from subject Wide Angle 1.6 to 10.5 feet (0.5 to 3.2 m) Telephoto 1.6 to 7.5 feet (0.5 to 2.3 m) m Press the Flash button repeatedly to scroll through the flash options.
Chapter 2 Putting Yourself in the Picture The Self Timer creates a 10-second delay between the time you press the Shutter button and the time the picture is taken. This setting is ideal when you want to include yourself in the picture. 1 Press the Self Timer button. To cancel the Self Timer, press the Self Timer button again. 2 Place the camera on a flat, steady surface or use a tripod. 3 Compose the picture, then press the Shutter button.
3 Customizing Picture-taking Settings Use Capture on the Mode dial to customize your picture-taking settings. Setting Exposure Compensation Use the Exposure Compensation feature to control how much light is allowed into the camera. You can adjust the exposure by plus or minus 2 stops in 1/2stop increments. NOTE: This setting is ideal for controlling scenes in which the light source is behind the subject (backlit), or for correcting pictures that are too light or too dark.
Chapter 3 Setting White Balance Whites can look white in daylight, but different under other lighting conditions. Use the White Balance setting to correct for these types of color shifts that result from shooting pictures under different light sources. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the White Balance menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the White Balance setting you want to use. AUTO (default)—automatically corrects the white balance. Ideal for everyday picture taking.
Chapter 3 Setting a Color Mode Use the Color Mode setting for controlling color tones and moods. Select color, black and white, or sepia. The camera Preview displays the color setting selected. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the Color Mode menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Color Mode setting you want to use. COLOR (default)—for color pictures. BLACK & WHITE—for black and white pictures. SEPIA—gives pictures a reddish-brown cast. Ideal for creating an antique look.
Chapter 3 Setting the Picture Quality Use the Quality setting to select a picture resolution. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the Quality menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Quality setting you want to use. 3.1 MP is the highest resolution, 0.8 MP is the lowest. See the table below for details. 4 Press Select to accept the change and return to the Menu screen. 5 Press Menu to exit the Menu screen. This setting remains until you change it.
Chapter 3 Setting Exposure Metering To ensure proper exposure, your camera features three metering systems for measuring the amount of light entering the camera lens: Multi-Pattern, CenterWeighted, and Center Spot metering. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the Exposure Metering menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Exposure Metering setting you want to use. MULTI-PATTERN (default)—evaluates the lighting conditions in the entire scene to give an even picture exposure.
Chapter 3 Setting Picture Sharpness Use the Sharpness setting to highlight or blend the edges of the subject in pictures. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the Sharpness menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Sharpness setting you want to use. SHARP—increases contrast on the edges of the image. Ideal for improved image clarity, or if you later want to crop or cut out specific areas in the picture. STANDARD (default)—use when no special effect is needed.
Chapter 3 Setting the ISO Speed The ISO setting controls the camera’s sensitivity to light. Use a lower ISO setting in brightly lit scenes, use a higher ISO setting for low-light scenes. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the ISO Speed menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the ISO Speed setting you want to use. AUTO (default)—the camera automatically sets an ISO speed based on scene brightness. Ideal for general picture taking.
Chapter 3 Setting the Shutter Speed Use the Auto setting and let the camera automatically set the shutter speed. Or choose a shutter speed from 0.7 to 16 seconds, for longer exposures when taking pictures in low-light conditions, without flash. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 2 Highlight the Shutter Speed menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Shutter Speed setting you want to use. AUTO (default)—camera sets the shutter speed based on available lighting conditions. 0.
Chapter 3 Placing the Date on Pictures Use the Date & Time Stamp setting to imprint the date, or the date and time, on the lower-right corner of the picture. NOTE: This setting is ideal for recording when a picture was taken; for example, for a birthday or an insurance claim. 1 Make sure the camera clock is set to the correct time (see page 7). 2 Turn the Mode dial to Capture and press Menu. 3 Highlight the Date & Time Stamp menu , then press Select.
4 Reviewing Your Pictures Use the Review setting on the Mode dial to review and work with the pictures that are stored on the Picture Card in your camera. You can view each picture stored on the Picture Card in your camera in full LCD screen size, or you can use the Filmstrip feature to view and select from up to three thumbnail-size pictures at one time. NOTE: This is ideal for sharing pictures on the camera with friends, or for verifying your pictures before you transfer or print them.
Chapter 4 Viewing Pictures With the Filmstrip 1 Turn the Mode dial to Review W SELECT MENU Filmstrip Memory bar Needle locator 32 T , then press Menu to display the Filmstrip. 2 Press the arrow buttons to scroll through the Filmstrip. To continuously scroll, press and hold an arrow button. For fast scrolling through the memory bar, press Select while holding an arrow button. When you release the arrow button, the LCD screen is refreshed with the new, current picture.
Chapter 4 Magnifying Pictures Use the Magnify feature to zoom in on specific parts of a picture. With this feature, you can magnify at two or four times the normal magnification level. NOTE: This feature is ideal for checking detail and verifying sharp focus on your pictures. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Review and press Menu. 2 Press an arrow button to display the picture you want to magnify. 3 Highlight the Magnify menu , then press Select.
Chapter 4 Deleting Pictures Use the Delete feature to quickly delete one or all pictures from the Picture Card. NOTE: Delete pictures to free up space on the Picture Card. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Review and press Menu. 2 Press an arrow button to display the picture you want to delete. 3 Highlight the Delete menu , then press Select. 4 Highlight the Delete setting you want to use. PICTURE—deletes the selected picture. EXIT (default)—returns you to the Main screen.
Chapter 4 Protecting Pictures Use the Protect feature to prevent special pictures from being accidentally deleted from the Picture Card. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Review and press Menu. 2 Press an arrow button to display the picture you want to protect. 3 Highlight the Protect menu , then press Select. 4 Press Select to protect the picture. The Protect icon appears in the LCD screen with the protected picture. 5 Press Select again to remove picture protection. 6 Press Menu to exit the Menu screen.
Chapter 4 Running a Slide Show Use the slide show feature to automatically display your pictures on the camera LCD screen at a selectable interval rate. You can also run a slide show on any video device that is equipped with a video input, such as a television, computer monitor, or digital projector. The slide show feature is not available when you have only one picture stored on the Picture Card. NOTE: The Slide Show feature is ideal for sharing pictures at a social function or at business meetings.
Chapter 4 Selecting Pictures for Automatic Printing Use the Print Order feature to select specific pictures and print quantities to be printed automatically to a KODAK Personal Picture Maker or other directprint-enabled printer. NOTE: This feature saves time when printing. When you put the Picture Card into a print order enabled printer, only the images you marked are printed. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Review and press Menu. 2 Press an arrow button to display the picture you want to select for printing.
Chapter 4 5 If you selected Cancel Print Order or Index Print, a screen appears that asks you to confirm your choice. Answer Yes or No. If you selected Current Picture or All Pictures, the # Copies screen appears. Press an arrow button to select the number of prints you want (0-99). Zero (0) cancels the order for that picture. 6 Press Select. The Print Order icon appears in the LCD screen with the pictures that are marked for printing. 7 Press Select. 8 Press Menu to exit the Menu screen.
5 Personalizing Your Camera Use Setup on the Mode dial to customize the camera settings according to your personal preferences. Selecting a Power Save Setting The Power Save feature is designed to balance battery consumption with camera performance. See page 78 for how the settings affect camera perfomance. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Power Save menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Power Save setting you want to use. OFF—camera performance has priority over battery consumption.
Chapter 5 Setting Digital Zoom Behavior Digital zoom provides three times (3X) magnification beyond the optical zoom. You can specify how the digital zoom feature behaves when you push Telephoto (T) on the 4-way arrow button beyond the limit of optical zoom. See page 18 for how to use digital zoom. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Digital Zoom menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Digital Zoom setting you want to use.
Chapter 5 Adjusting the Camera Sounds The camera provides sounds (beeps) to let you know when certain functions are being performed. You can set the camera to make sounds for most functions, for selected functions, or to make no sounds at all. NOTE: Set the Camera Sounds to OFF when taking pictures at events that require a quiet environment, for example, a wedding or a play. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Camera Sounds menu , then press Select.
Chapter 5 Setting Video Out The Video Out feature allows you to match the camera video-out signal to the standard applicable in your area. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Video Out menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Video Out setting you want to use. NTSC (default)—standard used in most countries except Europe. The United States and Japan use NTSC. PAL (EUROPE)—standard used in European countries. 4 Press Select. This setting remains until you change it.
Chapter 5 Formatting a Picture Card You may need to format a Picture Card if the card becomes corrupted. When this happens, an error message appears on the LCD screen. See page 67 for error messages. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Format Card menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Format Card setting you want to use. CONTINUE FORMAT—erases all the information on the card and formats the Picture Card for use in the camera. CANCEL (default)—exits without making a change.
Chapter 5 Resetting User Settings The Reset User Settings feature allows you to return most Capture menu settings to the original factory defaults each time the camera is turned off. See page 77 for a list of the original factory defaults. 1 Turn the Mode dial to Setup . 2 Highlight the Reset User Settings menu , then press Select. 3 Highlight the Reset setting you want to use. Yes—every time the camera is turned off, most Capture menu settings are returned to the original factory defaults.
6 Installing the Software Make sure that you install the software from the KODAK Picture Software CD before you transfer pictures from your camera to the computer. MACINTOSH OS X users, see the note on page 46 before installing the software. Install the Software 1 Before you begin, close all software applications running on your computer. 2 Place the KODAK Picture Software CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Chapter 6 Note to MACINTOSH OS X Users Do not install KODAK Connection Software or Picture Transfer Software—MACINTOSH OS X ships with an image capture application that provides the functionality of both the KODAK Connection Software and KODAK Picture Transfer Software. These two applications are unnecessary and will not function if installed on MACINTOSH OS X.
Chapter 6 Software Included With Your Camera The KODAK Picture Software CD contains the following applications that let you access, transfer, and have fun with your digital pictures. Your CD may contain additional software not described here. For detailed information on using the applications, refer to the online help supplied with each application. KODAK Picture Transfer Software Automatically transfer your pictures from the camera to the computer, and organize and rename your picture files.
Chapter 6 Computer System Requirements For acceptable picture transfer and editing, we recommend the following minimum requirements: WINDOWS-Based System Requirements m Personal computer designed for WINDOWS 98, 98SE, ME, or 2000 m 200 MHz processor m RAM: 48 MB minimum (96 MB recommended) for WINDOWS 98, 98SE, ME 64 MB minimum (128 MB recommended) for WINDOWS 2000 m 100 MB of available hard disk space m CD-ROM drive m Available USB port m Color monitor with a minimum resolution of 800 x 600 pixels; Hig
7 Using Pictures on Your Computer Transfer your pictures to your computer and see the power of digital imaging at your fingertips. Before You Transfer Your Pictures Before you transfer your pictures from the camera to the computer, make sure you have installed the software from the KODAK Picture Software CD (page 45). MACINTOSH OS X users, see note on page 46 before installing software.
Chapter 7 Connecting With the KODAK EASYSHARE Camera Dock 1 Open the connection door on the bottom of the camera. 2 Place the camera in the Camera Dock. 3 Push the Connect button. For more information, see Chapter 8, Using the KODAK EASYSHARE Camera Dock. NOTE: You can also use a KODAK USB Picture Card Reader to transfer your pictures. See your KODAK retail dealer or visit our Web site at http:// www.kodak.com/go/accessories.
Chapter 7 Transferring on a MACINTOSH Computer m Select the Automatic Transfer radio button, then click Transfer. Automatic Transfer copies all the pictures from the picture storage location to your computer using the current settings. m Or, select the Guided Transfer radio button, then click Transfer. Guided Transfer lets you review each picture, give it a name, and select a destination folder on your computer.
Chapter 7 Transferring Your Pictures Manually KODAK Camera Connection Software lets you directly access the pictures in your camera and allows you to: display and browse thumbnails of your pictures, copy all or selected pictures to your computer, open a picture directly in third-party applications, delete pictures from a storage location, format the Picture Card, and view information on a selected picture.
Chapter 7 Printing Your Pictures Choose your favorite method to enjoy long-lasting prints of your digital pictures. From KODAK Picture Software m Print to your home printer with KODAK Premium Picture Paper. From a Picture Card m Use the Print Order feature (page 37) to automatically print from a Picture Card directly to a KODAK Personal Picture Maker or other direct-printenabled printer. m Take your Picture Card to your local photo retailer for printing.
8 Using the KODAK EASYSHARE Camera Dock The KODAK EASYSHARE Camera Dock (Camera Dock) makes it easier than ever to transfer your pictures to the computer. In addition, the Camera Dock is a rapid battery charger for the included KODAK Ni-MH Rechargeable Battery Pack, and the Camera Dock supplies power to the camera. To keep the Battery Pack charged and the camera always ready to take pictures, store your camera in the Camera Dock whenever you are not using it.
Chapter 8 Installing the Dock Insert KODAK DX-series cameras are packaged with a Dock insert, which is used to custom-fit the camera to the Camera Dock. 1 Place the front tabs on the insert into the slots in the Camera Dock cavity. 2 Fit the insert down into the cavity and snap the insert into place. To order an insert for your camera, contact Kodak Customer Support, see page 72. Connecting the Camera Dock Connect the Camera Dock to your computer and to an external power source.
Chapter 8 Installing the Battery Pack in the Camera 1 Open the battery door on the bottom of the camera. 2 Install the Battery Pack in the direction of the arrows, as illustrated. CAUTION: The Battery Pack can only be inserted into the camera in the orientation shown. If the Battery Pack does not easily install, reposition it and try again. DO NOT FORCE IT. Doing so can damage your camera. 3 Close the battery door. IMPORTANT: The batteries in the Battery Pack are not charged when you receive it.
Chapter 8 3 Place the camera in the Camera Dock and push down to seat the connectors; the Dock locator pin fits into the camera tripod socket. The Camera Dock light glows green when the connectors are properly seated. The camera is now powered by Locator Light the Camera Dock instead of the camera pin batteries. NOTE: If the Battery Pack in the camera requires charging, the Camera Dock light turns red after a few seconds and charging begins.
Chapter 8 Transferring Pictures To transfer pictures from your camera to your computer: Connect 1 Place the camera in the Camera Dock. 2 Push the Connect button. m The Camera Dock light blinks green while the connection to the computer is active. m If installed, KODAK Picture Transfer Software automatically opens on your computer and your pictures are transferred. You can also transfer your pictures manually while the green light is blinking. See page 52.
