Th e operation of putt ing in the Solio paper s hould be per-
form
ed in a subdu ed light, that is, in an ordinary room as far as
po ssible from any window. The unu sed p ape r should be
re
turn ed to its envelope a nd ke pt in a draw er aw ay from the
li g ht .
The back of printing frame is hin ge d to pe rmit the inspec-
tion of one section of the pr int at a tim e witho ut destroying its
r
eg ister with the n ega tives.
Th e printing frame, when fill ed as directed, sho uld be laid
glass side
up in the s tron gest light o bt ainable (sunlight pre -
ferred ) until the
light pa ssing throu gh the n ega tiv es into the
sensitive paper has
impr essed itse lf upon it. Th e pro gress in
printing m
ay be exa mined from time to time by re mo vi ng th e
frame from the
strong li g ht a nd opening one part of the hin ged
back, k ee ping the other section fastened to pr eve nt the p aper
from shifting. Th e printing s hould be continu ed until th e print
is a little dark er than th e d es ired sh ade .
Place print wit hout pr evious washing in the following com -
bined
toning and fixing ba th:
4 oz. Eas tman's Solio Tonin g Bath.
8 oz. Cold Water.
Po ur the toning solution into one of the tr ays and imm erse
th e prints one after the ot her in the to ning bath. Five or six
prints
ca n be toned tog e th er if they are kept in motion and n ot
allowed to li e in co ntact . Turn the prints all face down a nd
then face up and re peat this all the time they are toning. Th e
prints will begin
to cha ng e color almost immediately from
r
ed dish brown to reddish yellow, then brown to purple. The
change wiIl be gra du al from on e sh ade to another, a nd the
toning should be
stopp ed when the print ge ts th e sh ade
d es ired.
Tw elve ounc es of the diluted toning solution will ton e two
do zen prints; after that a n ew so lution sho uld be m ade same as
before.
'When the prop er shad e has been attained in toning bath, th e
prints
should be transferr ed for fiv e minutes to the following
salt so lution to s top the toning:
Salt, I oz.
Water, 32 QZS.
