During installation of the device make sure that you use ESD (electronic discharge) protection equippment. Because a new pH sensor needs to be calibrated before it is installed into its final measuring location, it is important to follow the installation order: 1 2 3 4 Unpack the sensor. The mounting position of the sensor should not deviate more than 75° from vertical position (sensor tip pointing downwards). Doing otherwise might cause internal air bubbles to float into the membrane glass.

In a fully functional sensor, the optimal slope is -59 mV for each pH unit and the optimal zero point is 0 mV at pH 7. The slope should at least have a value between -50...-65 mV per pH unit. Re-calibrate the sensor if the slope does not approximate those limits.

This is also called the slope of the pH sensor. The slope is temperature dependent and decreases over life time of the sensor. Appendix .book Page 41 Monday, November 18, 2013 11:05 AM APPENDIX 8 SMARTSENS PH 8150 8.1 pH as a function of mV The pH value is the negative decadative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration, and it is directly related to the proportion of hydrogen ions H+ to hydroxide ions OH- in the media. The pH sensor measures excess or deficit of the hydrogen ions and gives a proportional millivolt signal as output. The signal is 59.16 mV per 1 pH at 25°C / 77°F.
