Common DSP Control Parameters
ThetypeofDSPfunctionavailableforanyfunctionblockdependsonthealgorithm.Someofthe
specializedfunctionslikethePANNERarealwayslocatedjustbeforethefinalAMPfunction.
Others,likethetwo‐inputfunctions,appearonlyinalgorithmsthatarestructuredfortwo‐input
functions.
Youcanchange
thenatureofeachlayerofaprogram simplybyassigningdifferentDSP
functionstothelayer’salgorithm.Yourlevelofcontrolgoesmuchdeeperthanthat,however.
EachDSPfunctionhasoneormoreparameterstowhichyoucanpatchavarietyofcontrol
sourcestomodifythebehavior
oftheDSPfunctionsthemselves.
Theparametersonthevariouscontrol‐inputpagesareverysimilar;infact,therearesix
parametersthatappearonalmosteverypage.Consequentlywerefertothemasthecommon
DSPcontrolparameters.Althoughtheparametersonthecontrol‐inputpagesdifferslightly
fromfunction
tofunction,youcanexpecttoseesomeorallofthecommonDSPcontrol
parameterswheneveryouselectthecontrol‐inputpageforanyoftheDSPfunctions.
You’llrecognizethecommonDSPcontrolparameters,alongwithseveralotherparameters.
Keepinmindthatthere’sasetofcommoncontrol
parametersforeachoftheDSPfunctions;in
thiscasewe’redescribingthemonlyastheyapplytothepitchcontrolfunction.
Function-parameter
UnliketheotherfivecommonDSPparameters,thefunction‐parametersareaccessibleonboth
theDSPCTLpageandtheDSPMODpage.Theyarelistedalongtheleft‐handsideofeachpage;
anychangesmadetothemononepagearereflectedintheother.Thelabelofeachfunction‐
parameter
dependsonitsfunctioninthecurrentprogram’salgorithm.Forexample,thePitch
function’sfunction‐parameterislabeledPitch;whereasthetwo‐blockLopassfunction’s
function‐parametersarelabeledLPFrqandLPRes.
Byadjustingthefunction‐parameter,youcanaddafixedamountofadjustmentto anyDSP
function.ForthePitchfunction,adjustingthefunction‐parameterwillchangethepitchin
semitoneincrements.Usethisasastartingpoint tosetthepitchwhereyouwantittobe
normally.Thiswillshiftthepitchofthecurrentlyselectedlayer,and willaffecttheplaybackrateof
sampledsounds.Sampledsoundshaveanupperlimitonpitchadjustment(oneoctaveupfrom
sample’soriginalpitch.)It’snormalforthepitchesofsampledsoundsto“pin”(stopgetting
higher)whenyouadjustthepitchupwardinlargeamounts.Theoscillatorwaveformscanbe
pitchedhigher.Anysoundcan
bepitcheddownwardwithoutlimit.
Theprimaryuseofadjustingthefunction‐parameterorfi neadjustparameter(whichwillbe
explainedunderthenextheading)istooffsetthecumulativeeffectsoftheotherDSPfunction
parameters.Forexample,youmightsetahighvalueforkeytracking(definedbelow)for
a
dramaticchangeineffectacrossthekeyboard.Theeffectmightbetoomuchatoneendofthe
keyboard,however,soyoucoulduseoneoftheadjustparameterstoreducetheinitialamount
ofthateffect.
