Common DSP Control Parameters
ThetypeofDSPfunctionavailableforanyfunctionblockdependsonthealgorithm.Someofthe
specializedfunctionslikethePANNERarealwayslocatedjustbeforethefinalAMPfunction.
Others,likethetwoinputfunctions,appearonlyinalgorithmsthatarestructuredfortwoinput
functions.
Youcanchange
thenatureofeachlayerofaprogram simplybyassigningdifferentDSP
functionstothelayersalgorithm.Yourlevelofcontrolgoesmuchdeeperthanthat,however.
EachDSPfunctionhasoneormoreparameterstowhichyoucanpatchavarietyofcontrol
sourcestomodifythebehavior
oftheDSPfunctionsthemselves.
Theparametersonthevariouscontrolinputpagesareverysimilar;infact,therearesix
parametersthatappearonalmosteverypage.Consequentlywerefertothemasthecommon
DSPcontrolparameters.Althoughtheparametersonthecontrolinputpagesdifferslightly
fromfunction
tofunction,youcanexpecttoseesomeorallofthecommonDSPcontrol
parameterswheneveryouselectthecontrolinputpageforanyoftheDSPfunctions.
YoullrecognizethecommonDSPcontrolparameters,alongwithseveralotherparameters.
Keepinmindthatthere’sasetofcommoncontrol
parametersforeachoftheDSPfunctions;in
thiscasewe’redescribingthemonlyastheyapplytothepitchcontrolfunction.
Function-parameter
UnliketheotherfivecommonDSPparameters,thefunctionparametersareaccessibleonboth
theDSPCTLpageandtheDSPMODpage.Theyarelistedalongthelefthandsideofeachpage;
anychangesmadetothemononepagearereflectedintheother.Thelabelofeachfunction
parameter
dependsonitsfunctioninthecurrentprogram’salgorithm.Forexample,thePitch
function’sfunctionparameterislabeledPitch;whereasthetwoblockLopassfunction’s
functionparametersarelabeledLPFrqandLPRes.
Byadjustingthefunctionparameter,youcanaddafixedamountofadjustmentto anyDSP
function.ForthePitchfunction,adjustingthefunctionparameterwillchangethepitchin
semitoneincrements.Usethisasastartingpoint tosetthepitchwhereyouwantittobe
normally.Thiswillshiftthepitchofthecurrentlyselectedlayer,and willaffecttheplaybackrateof
sampledsounds.Sampledsoundshaveanupperlimitonpitchadjustment(oneoctaveupfrom
sample’soriginalpitch.)It’snormalforthepitchesofsampledsoundsto“pin”(stopgetting
higher)whenyouadjustthepitchupwardinlargeamounts.Theoscillatorwaveformscanbe
pitchedhigher.Anysoundcan
bepitcheddownwardwithoutlimit.
Theprimaryuseofadjustingthefunctionparameterorfi neadjustparameter(whichwillbe
explainedunderthenextheading)istooffsetthecumulativeeffectsoftheotherDSPfunction
parameters.Forexample,youmightsetahighvalueforkeytracking(definedbelow)for
a
dramaticchangeineffectacrossthekeyboard.Theeffectmightbetoomuchatoneendofthe
keyboard,however,soyoucoulduseoneoftheadjustparameterstoreducetheinitialamount
ofthateffect.
