Mighty Stack Water Heater Page 5 drain pan under the appliance. Make sure the drain pan is properly piped to an adequate drain. 2. Place the water heater as close as possible to the vent or chimney. 3. For minimum clearances around the water heater, refer to Table 2. Maintain the minimum distances from all combustible surfaces (see Figure 3). The unit can be installed in a closet. Pay special attention to the air supply opening to the closet.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 6 5. Turn off the water heater before you do any pressure testing on the gas lines. If you will be testing at a pressure greater than 1/2" psig (3.5 kPa) – Disconnect the gas line before the water heater and before the shutoff valve for the water heater. If you will be testing at a pressure equal to or less than 1/2" psig (3.5 kPa) – Turn off the manual shut off valve ahead of the water heater gas controls. 6. Provide gas to the water heater at the pressure shown in Table 4.
Mighty Stack Water Heater The information in Table 5 is not applicable in installations where exhaust fans or blowers of any type are used. Such installations must be designed by qualified engineers. If a blower or fan is used to supply air to the water heater room, the installer should make sure it does not create drafts which could cause nuisance shutdowns.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 8 material used. This will maintain the clearances and prevent physical damage and separation of the joints. NOTE: Always provide a minimum clearance of 6 inches between a Type C vent pipe and any combustible materials.

LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 10 Figure 9. Horizontal Vent Terminations. 2. If a backflow preventer, pressure reducing valve, or check valve is included in the cold water supply line, you must provide a way to control thermal expansion of the water in the tank. This will prevent the temperature and pressure relief valve from being forced open repeatedly. For advice on controlling this situation, contact the water supplier or local plumbing inspector.
Mighty Stack Water Heater Page 11 WARNING The boiler must be electrically grounded. Follow the requirements of the local authority having jurisdiction. In the absence of such requirements, follow the latest edition of the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70 in the U.S., or the latest edition of CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1, in Canada. Do not rely on the gas or water piping to ground the metal parts of the boiler. Plastic pipe or dielectric unions may isolate the boiler electrically.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 12 If any of the original wire (as supplied with the appliance) must be replaced, it must be replaced with appliance wiring material suitable for 105 degrees C or its equivalent. Mighty-Stack MODEL TL00 H2022200B Figure 12. Connection Diagram. Table 10 lists the flow and pressure drop requirements for the TL00-199. These values provide the proper circulation between the water heater and a storage tank.
Mighty Stack Water Heater Page 13 H2022200B Figure 13. Wiring Schematic. If the loop between the heater and storage tank comprises more than this nominal piping, larger diameter pipe or a larger pump should be considered.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 14 SECTION 2. Operating Instructions DANGER • • • • • WARNING Should overheating occur or the gas supply fail to shut off, turn off the manual gas control valve to the appliance. WARNING Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water. Immediately call a qualified service technician to replace the appliance. 2A. Starting the System 1. 2. 3. 4. Close the manual gas valve located outside the water heater. Turn on the power to the unit.
Mighty Stack Water Heater Page 15 2B. Starting the System After Extended Shut-Down 2C. Shut-Down Procedure 1. Turn off the power to the unit. 1. Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water system that has not been used for a long period of time (usually two weeks or more.) Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable. This gas can easily burn or explode if it is ignited by a flame or electrical spark. 2. Turn off the gas valve to the unit. 3. Turn off the valve on the cold water supply.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 16 FOR YOUR SAFETY READ BEFORE OPERATING WARNING: If you do not follow these instructions exactly, a fire or explosion may result causing property damage, personal injury, or loss of life. A. This water heater is equipped with an ignition device that automatically lights the pilot. Do not try to light the pilot by hand. B. BEFORE OPERATING, smell all around the water heater area for gas.
Mighty Stack Water Heater SECTION 3. Maintenance and Service Page 17 correctly for the unit to operate safely. Laars strongly recommends that the basic items listed below be checked by a qualified service technician every year. WARNING Follow local regulations with respect to installation of carbon monoxide (CO) detectors. To reduce the risk of CO spillage, follow the maintenance schedule for the water heater.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 18 3. There is an aquastat mounted near the bottom of the tank. Eventually the water temperature at the aquastat drops below the set point, and the aquastat calls for heat. 4. When the aquastat calls for heat, the tank circulator starts. (Notice that this happens before the burner lights.) The water circulates through the tank, and through the heater. 5.
Mighty Stack Water Heater 3F. Electrical Troubleshooting The procedure listed on the next page allows you to quickly check the key parts of the electrical and control systems. You will need a volt-ohmmeter to perform these tests. WARNING Disconnect the power supply to the boiler before doing any electrical work. Electrical shock can cause severe personal injury or death. Page 19 Caution Label all wires prior to disconnection when servicing controls.
LAARS HEATING SYSTEMS Page 20 Turn gas supply off. Set aquastat to call for heat. Is gas valve powered? (Should be 24V AC) NO YES Does igniter warm up and glow red? NO YES Check: • On/Off toggle switch • Line voltage/power • Low voltage transformer • Limit controller • Aquastat • Wiring • Fan proving switch on combustion air blower • Roll-out switch (inside cabinet) Unplug igniter, measure voltage at two bottom terminals of gas valve. Is this 24V AC? YES Replace igniter.
