It is not uncommon to see commercial condenser fan motors in which the frame is open
to some degree. When mounted in the condensing unit if the top side of the motor
is open a rainshield may be attached to prevent rain from entering the motor. Some
rainshields may be identied as fan canopies. This indicates that not only will the
canopy shield against rain but that it also is designed with blades that actually act as a
fan when the motor is operating, providing additional air for cooling the motor.
