Includes: 6 Magnetic, write-and-wipe owls (1 for each
vowel and 1 blank)
Turn your whiteboard into a branch of learning with
Magnetic Vowel Owls! Attach the magnets to your
whiteboard to emphasize long and short vowel sounds,
and build phonological awareness. Your students will be
language owl-stars—hoo-ray!
Suggested Uses
• Place a Vowel Owl on the whiteboard and write words
with the corresponding short vowel sound underneath.
Start with c-v-c word patterns (“cat”) and progress to
c-v-c-c word patterns (“pack”).
• Place all 5 labeled owls on the whiteboard. Write words
with the corresponding vowel sound underneath
each one.
• Use the blank owl to represent long vowel sounds.
Write the letter i, for example, on the blank owl with
a line over it (
-
i ). Place this owl and the green i owl
(representing short vowel sounds) side by side on the
board. Write several words underneath the respective
owls to contrast short and long vowel sounds (e.g., tin,
lip, six vs. bike, ice, five).
• Use the blank owl for more difficult vowel sounds, such
as diphthongs (out, boy), vowel digraphs (meat, read), or
“sometimes y.”
• Group students in teams of 3–4. Assign each group one
vowel. Place the labeled owls on the whiteboard. Have
students race in teams to write words with the matching
vowel sound underneath their assigned owl.
Care Instructions
Store the magnets flat to prevent warping. If the magnets
curl, gently bend them back in the opposite direction to
flatten, or rub them on the board and let them sit. We
advise not bending the magnets roughly, or too far, as this
will decrease their magnetism.
Before writing, test your dry- or wet-erase marker on
the corner of a magnet to make sure marks erase. Erase
wet-erase marks with a damp cloth. Do not saturate the
magnets, as water will damage the product.
