Thischapterprovidesinformationabouthowtoprotectyourcomputerfromunauthorizeduse.
Usingpasswords
Youcanhelppreventyourcomputerfromunauthorizedusebyusingpasswords.Afteryousetapassword,a
promptisdisplayedonthescreeneachtimeyouturnonthecomputer.Enteryourpasswordattheprompt.
Youcannotusethecomputerunlessyoutypethecorrectpassword.
Ifyouhavesetapower-onpassword,asupervisorpassword,oraharddiskpassword,itunlocks
automaticallywhenthecomputerresumesfromsleepmode.
Note:IfaWindowspasswordhasbeenset,youarepromptedtoenteritwhenthecomputerresumes
fromsleepmode.
Passwordsintroduction
Power-onpassword
Youcansetapower-onpasswordtohelpprotectyourcomputeragainstunauthorizedaccess.
Ifyousetapower-onpassword,thepasswordpromptisdisplayedonthescreenwheneveryouturnonthe
computer.Youmustenterthecorrectpasswordtostartusingthecomputer.
Whenthisiconisdisplayed,typeapower-onpasswordorasupervisorpassword.
Supervisorpassword
ThesupervisorpasswordprotectsthesysteminformationstoredintheThinkPadSetupprogram.Ifyouhave
setasupervisorpassword,noonecanchangetheconfigurationofthecomputerwithoutthepassword.It
providesthefollowingsecurityfeatures:
•Ifonlyasupervisorpasswordisset,apasswordpromptisdisplayedwhenyoutrytostarttheThinkPad
Setupprogram.UnauthorizeduserscannotaccesstheThinkPadSetupprogramwithoutthepassword.
•Thesystemadministratorcanusethesupervisorpasswordtoaccessacomputereveniftheuserofthat
computerhassetapower-onpassword.Thesupervisorpasswordoverridesthepower-onpassword.
•ThesystemadministratorcansetthesamesupervisorpasswordonmanyThinkPadnotebookcomputers
tomakeadministrationeasier.
Harddiskpasswords
Settingaharddiskpasswordpreventsunauthorizedaccesstothedataontheharddiskdrive.When
aharddiskpasswordisset,youarepromptedtotypeavalidpasswordeachtimeyoutrytoaccessthe
harddiskdrive.
Thefollowingtwotypesofharddiskpasswordscanhelpprotecttheinformationstoredonthestoragedrive:
•Userharddiskpassword
Ifauserharddiskpasswordhasbeenset,butnomasterharddiskpasswordhasbeen,theusermust
entertheuserharddiskpasswordtoaccessfilesandapplicationsonthestoragedrive.
•Masterharddiskpassword
