Chapter7.UsingtheSetupUtilityprogram
TheSetupUtilityprogramisusedtoviewandchangethecongurationsettingsofyourcomputer,regardless
ofwhichoperatingsystemyouareusing.However,theoperatingsystemsettingsmightoverrideanysimilar
settingsintheSetupUtilityprogram.
StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram
TostarttheSetupUtilityprogram,dothefollowing:
1.Ensurethatyourcomputeristurnedoff.
2.RepeatedlypressandreleasetheF1keywhenturningonthecomputer.Whenyouhearmultiple
beepsorseealogoscreen,releasetheF1key.
Note:IfaPower-OnPasswordoranAdministratorPasswordhasbeenset,theSetupUtilityprogram
menuwillnotbedisplayeduntilyoutypethecorrectpassword.Formoreinformation,see“Using
passwords”onpage89
.
WhenthePOSTdetectsthattheharddiskdrivehasbeenremovedfromyourcomputerorthememory
modulesizehasdecreased,anerrormessagewillbedisplayedwhenyoustartthecomputerandyouwillbe
promptedtodooneofthefollowing:
•PressF1toentertheSetupUtilityprogram.
Note:AfteryouentertheSetupUtilityprogram,pressF10tosavechangesandexittheSetupUtility
program.PressEnterwhenpromptedtoconrmtheexit.Theerrormessagewillnotbedisplayedagain.
•PressF2tobypasstheerrormessageandlogintotheoperatingsystem.
Note:YouhavetoenablethecongurationchangedetectionfeatureforthePOSTtodetecttheremovalof
theharddiskdrive.Toenablethecongurationchangedetectionfeature,dothefollowing:
1.StarttheSetupUtilityprogram.
2.FromtheSetupUtilityprogrammainmenu,selectSecurity➙CongurationChangeDetection,
andpressEnter.
3.SelectEnabledandpressEnter.
4.PressF10tosavechangesandexittheSetupUtilityprogram.PressEnterwhenpromptedtoconrm
theexit.
Viewingandchangingsettings
TheSetupUtilityprogrammenulistsvariousitemsaboutthesystemconguration.Tovieworchange
settings,starttheSetupUtilityprogram.See“StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage89.Then,follow
theinstructionsonthescreen.
YoucanuseeitherthekeyboardorthemousetonavigatethroughBIOSmenuchoices.Thekeysusedto
performvarioustasksaredisplayedatthebottomofeachscreen.
Usingpasswords
ByusingtheSetupUtilityprogram,youcansetpasswordstopreventunauthorizedaccesstoyourcomputer
anddata.Thefollowingtypesofpasswordsareavailable:
