Numeric keypad (Applicable for B50/N50 Series) The keyboard has a separate numeric keypad. To enable or disable the keypad, press the Numeric Lock key (Num Lock). Attention: • Make sure that none of the ventilation slots are blocked or else overheating of the computer may occur. d VGA port Connects to external display devices. e RJ-45 port Connects the computer to an Ethernet network. Danger: • To avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not connect a telephone cable to the Ethernet port. You can only connect an Ethernet cable to this port.
Chapter 1. Getting to know your computer Connecting USB devices You can connect a USB device to your computer by inserting its USB plug (Type A) into the USB port on your computer. The first time you plug a USB device into a USB port on your computer, Windows automatically installs a driver for that device. After the driver is installed, you can disconnect and reconnect the device without performing any additional steps.

Cable Cable Internet services use a cable modem connected to the residential cable TV line. DSL DSL is a family of related technologies that bring high speed network access to homes and small businesses over ordinary telephone lines.

You can attach a security lock to your computer to help prevent it from being removed without your permission. Attention: • • When the indicator is on, do not put the computer into sleep mode or turn off the computer. When the indicator is on, do not move the computer. Sudden physical shock might cause hard disk drive errors.

Chapter 2. Learning the basics To wake up the computer, do one of the following: • Press the power button. • Press the Fn key on the keyboard. Shutting down the computer If you are not going to use your computer for a long time, shut it down. To shut down your computer: • For the Windows 7 operating system: Click Start Shut down. • For the Windows 8.1 operating system: Open the charms bar and select Settings down.
Chapter 2. Learning the basics • Right-click the Start button in the lower-left corner and select Shut down or sign out → Shut down. • On the Start screen, click and select Shut down. Note: This operation depends on your BIOS settings. Please refer to the actual product.

Learning the basics Connecting to a wireless network ----------------------------------------------------- Enabling the wireless connection To connect to a wireless network, do the following: 1 Ensure the airplane mode is turned off. If the airplane mode is turned on, press the hotkey F7 ( ) to turn this mode off. 2 View the available wireless networks. • For the Windows 7 operating system: Click the wireless network connection status icon in the Windows notification area.

To access Windows Help and Support: • For the Windows 7 operating system: Click Start Help and Support. • For the Windows 8.1 operating system: - Open the charms bar and select Settings, and then select Help on the Settings menu.

Learning the basics Operating system interfaces (for the Windows 8.1 operating system) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Windows 8.1 comes with two main user interfaces: the Start screen and the Windows desktop. To switch from the Start screen to the Windows desktop, do one of the following: • Select the Desktop tile on the Start screen. • Press the Windows key + D.

Learning the basics Charms and the charms bar (for the Windows 8.1 operating system) -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Charms are navigation buttons that let you access basic tasks quickly. Charms include: Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings. The charms bar is the menu that contains the charms.
Chapter 2. Learning the basics Share charm The Share charm lets you send links, photos, and more to your friends and social networks without leaving the app you are in. Start charm The Start charm is a fast way to go to the Start screen. Devices charm The Devices charm allows you to connect or send files to connected external devices, including the devices to play, print, and project.
Chapter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system The Lenovo OneKey Recovery system is software designed to back up and restore your computer. You can use it to restore the system partition to its original status in case of a system failure. You can also create user backups for easy restoration as required. Note: • The OneKey Recovery system is not installed on some models. Please refer to the actual product.
Chapter 3. Lenovo OneKey Recovery system 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system partition to its original status or to a previously created back-up point. Note: • The recovery process is irreversible. Make sure to back up any data you wish to save on the system partition before starting the recovery process. • The recovery process may take a while. Make sure to connect the AC power adapter to your computer during the recovery process.

Finding information What safety precautions should I follow when using my computer? The Lenovo Safety and General Information Guide which came with your computer contains safety precautions for using your computer. Read and follow all the precautions when using your computer.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Lenovo OneKey Recovery system Where are the recovery discs? Your computer did not come with recovery discs. Use the recovery system if you need to restore the system to its factory status. What can I do if the back-up process fails? If you can start the backup but it fails during the back-up process, try the following steps: 1 Close all open programs, and then restart the back-up process. 2 Check to see if the destination media is damaged.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting When do I need to change the boot priority? The default boot priorities are UEFI First. If you need to install a legacy operating system (that is, an earlier version than that of your current operating system) on your computer, you will need to change the boot priority to Legacy First. The legacy operating system cannot be installed if you do not change the boot priority. Getting help How can I contact the customer support center? See “Chapter 3.

Troubleshooting Troubleshooting ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Display problems 28 When I turn on the computer, nothing appears on the screen. • If the screen is blank, make sure that: - The AC power adapter is connected to the computer, and the power cord is plugged into a working electrical outlet. - The computer power is on. Press the power button again for confirmation.

Troubleshooting BIOS password problems I forgot my password. • If you forget your user password, you must ask the system administrator to reset your user password. • If you forget your HDD password, a Lenovo authorized servicer cannot reset your password or recover data from the hard disk. You must take your computer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or a marketing representative to have the hard disk drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service.

Troubleshooting Sound problems No sound can be heard from the speakers even when the volume is turned up. • Make sure that: - The mute function is off. - The combo audio jack is not used. - The speakers are selected as the playback device. Battery problems Your computer shuts down before the power and battery status indicator shows empty. -orYour computer operates after the power and battery status indicator shows empty. • Reset the battery gauge using Lenovo Energy Management.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Other problems Your computer does not respond. • To turn off your computer, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds or more. If the computer still does not respond, remove the battery pack and the AC power adapter. • Your computer might lock when it enters sleep mode during a communication operation. Disable the sleep timer when you are working on the network. The computer does not start from a device you want. • See the EFI list of the BIOS setup utility.
Appendix A. CRU instructions Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) are parts that can be upgraded or replaced by the customer. If a CRU is determined to be defective during the warranty period, a replacement CRU will be provided to the customer. Customers are responsible for installing the self-service CRUs for this product.

Any other batteries could ignite or explode. • Make sure the computer is turned off and all the cables disconnected from the computer before you replace the battery pack. • Make sure the computer display is closed to avoid being damaged. To replace the battery pack, do the following: 1 Unlock the manual battery latch a .

CRU instructions Replacing the hard disk drive ------------------------------------------------------You can increase the storage capacity of your computer by replacing the hard disk drive with one of greater capacity. You can purchase a new hard disk drive from your reseller or Lenovo marketing representative. Notes: • Replace the hard disk drive only for upgrading or repair. The connectors and bay of the hard disk drive were not designed for frequent changes or drive swapping.

CRU instructions 4 Remove the hard disk drive by gently pulling it in the direction of the arrow d . 4 5 Remove the screws and detach the metal frame from the hard disk drive. 6 Attach the metal frame to a new hard disk drive and tighten the screws. 7 Slide the new hard disk drive firmly into place, and then reinstall the frame fixing screws to secure the drive. 8 Reinstall the bottom slot cover and tighten the screws. 9 Reinstall the battery pack.

CRU instructions Replacing the memory ----------------------------------------------------------------------------You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing double data rate three synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR3 SDRAM)-available as an option-in the memory slot of your computer. DDR3 SDRAM modules are available in various capacities. Note: • Use only the memory types supported by your computer.
Appendix A. CRU instructions 4 If two DDR3 SDRAM modules are already installed in the memory slot, remove one of them to make room for the new one by pulling out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time. Be sure to save the old DDR3 SDRAM for future use. 1 1 2 5 Align the notch of the DDR3 SDRAM module with the protrusion of the socket and gently insert the new module at a 30-45° angle.

To make sure that the DDR3 SDRAM module is installed correctly, do as follows: 1 Press the Novo button to open the Novo button menu. 2 Select the BIOS Setup. The System Memory item shows the total amount of memory installed in your computer.
