Attention: • Do not open the display panel beyond 130 degrees. When closing the display panel, be careful not to leave pens or any other objects in between the display panel and the keyboard. Otherwise, the display panel may be damaged.

Getting to know your computer a Integrated camera Use the camera for video communication. b Wireless antennas Connect to the wireless adapter to receive and send wireless radio. c Display Provides brilliant visual output. d Power button Press this button to turn on the computer. e Touch pad The touch pad functions as a conventional mouse. To move the cursor on the screen, slide your fingertip over the pad in the direction in which you want the cursor to move.
Chapter 1. Getting to know your computer Using the keyboard Your computer has a numeric keypad and function keys incorporated in its standard keyboard. Numeric keypad The keyboard has keys that, when enabled, work as a 10-key numeric keypad. To enable or disable the numeric keypad, press Fn + F8. Note: The Num lock indicator will light on if the numeric keypad is enabled. Function key combinations Through the use of the function keys, you can change operational features instantly.
Chapter 1. Getting to know your computer The following describes the features of each function key. 4 Fn + Esc: Windows 7: Opens the camera and audio settings window. The camera preview is turned on, and you can change the camera and audio settings as desired. Windows 8.1: Enables/disables the camera. Fn + F1: Enter sleep mode. Fn + F2: Turns on/off the backlight of the display. Fn + F3: Switches between the computer display and an external monitor.

You can attach a security lock to your computer to help prevent it from being removed without your permission.
Chapter 1. Getting to know your computer Connecting USB devices You can connect a USB device to your computer by inserting its USB plug (Type A) into the USB port on your computer. The first time you plug a USB device into a particular USB port on your computer, Windows automatically installs a driver for that device. After the driver is installed, you can disconnect and reconnect the device without performing any additional steps.

Getting to know your computer Connecting a Bluetooth device If your computer has an integrated Bluetooth adapter card, it can connect to and transfer data wirelessly to/from other Bluetooth enabled devices, such as notebook computers, PDAs and cell phones. You can transfer data between these devices up to 10 meters range in open space. Note: The actual maximum range may vary due to interference and transmission barriers.

Getting to know your computer Using memory cards (not supplied) Your computer supports the following types of memory card: • Secure Digital (SD) card • MultiMediaCard (MMC) • Secure Digital eXtended Capacity (SDXC) card • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card Attention: • • Insert only one card in the slot at a time. This card reader does not support SDIO devices (e.g., SDIO Bluetooth, etc.). Inserting a memory card Slide a memory card in until it clicks into place.

Chapter 2. Starting to use Windows Charms and the charms bar Charms are navigation buttons that let you access basic tasks quickly. Charms include: Search, Share, Start, Devices, and Settings. The charms bar is the menu that contains the charms. To display the charms bar, do one of the following: • Move the cursor to the upper-right or lower-right corner until the charms bar is displayed. • Press the Windows key + C.
Chapter 2. Starting to use Windows Share charm The Share charm lets you send links, photos, and more to your friends and social networks without leaving the app you are in. Start charm The Start charm is a fast way to go to the Start screen. Devices charm The Devices charm allows you to connect or send files to connected external devices, including the devices to play, print, and project.

Starting to use Windows Power-saving modes -------------------------------------------------------------------------When you have finished working with your computer, you can put it to shut it down, sleep, or hibernate. Shutting down the computer If you are not going to use your computer for a long time, shut it down. To shut down the computer, do the following: • Windows 7: Click Start → Shut down. • Windows 8.1: 1 Open the charms bar, then select Settings 2 Select Power . → Shut down.
Chapter 2. Starting to use Windows Putting your computer to sleep If you will be away from your computer for only a short time, put the computer to sleep. When the computer is in sleep mode, you can quickly wake it to resume use, bypassing the startup process. To put the computer to sleep, do one of the following: • Close the display lid. • Press the power button. • Press Fn + F1. • Do the proper operations in the operating system. Windows 7: Click Start → Sleep. Windows 8.

Starting to use Windows Connecting to a wireless network ---------------------------------------------To connect to a wireless network, do the following: 1 Press Fn + F5 to turn on the wireless feature. 2 View the available wireless networks. • Windows 7: Click the wireless network connection status icon in the Windows notification area. A list of available wireless networks will be displayed. • Windows 8.1: Open the charms bar and select Settings → .

To access Windows Help and Support, do one of the following: • Windows 7: Click Start → Help and Support. • Windows 8.1: • Open the charms bar and select Settings; select Help on the Settings menu. • Press F1 or Fn + F1 (depending on your keyboard layout).
Chapter 3. Lenovo recovery system The Lenovo recovery system is software designed to back up and restore your computer. You can use it to restore the system partition to its original status in case of a system failure. You can also create user backups for easy restoration as required. Notes: • If your computer is preinstalled with a GNU/Linux operating system, recovery system is not available.
Chapter 3. Lenovo recovery system Restoring the operating system To restore the Windows 7 operating system, do the following: 1 Turn off the computer. 2 Start the computer. press F11 when the Lenovo logo is displayed. 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the operating system.

Lenovo recovery system Windows 8.1 recovery system -----------------------------------------------------To launch the recovery program, do the following: 1 Turn off the computer. 2 Start the computer. press F11 when the Lenovo logo is displayed. Refreshing your computer It is to restore your computer to the factory default settings while preserving the data on the hard disk drive. To refresh your computer, do the following: 1 Open the charms bar.

Finding information What safety precautions should I follow when using my computer? The Lenovo Safety and General Information Guide which came with your computer contains safety precautions for using your computer. Read and follow all the precautions when using your computer.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Lenovo recovery system Where are the recovery discs? Your computer did not come with recovery discs. Use the Lenovo recovery system if you need to restore the system to its factory status or to a previously generated backup. What can I do if the back-up process fails? If you can start the backup but it fails during the back-up process, try the following steps: 1 Close all open programs, and then restart the back-up process. 2 Check to see if the destination media is damaged.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting When do I need to change the boot priority? The default boot priorities are UEFI First for Windows 8 and Legacy First for Windows 7. If you need to install a legacy operating system (that is, an earlier version than that of your current operating system) on your computer, you will need to change the boot priority to Legacy First. The legacy operating system cannot be installed if you do not change the boot priority.

Troubleshooting Troubleshooting -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Display problems When I turn on the computer, nothing appears on the screen. • If the screen is blank, make sure that: - The AC power adapter is connected to the computer, and the power cord is plugged into a working electrical outlet. - The computer power is on. (Press the power button again for confirmation.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Incorrect characters appear on the screen. • Are the operating system or programs installed correctly? If they are installed and configured correctly, have the computer serviced. BIOS password problems I forgot my password. 26 • If you forget your user password, you must ask the system administrator to reset your user password. • If you forget your HDD password, a Lenovo authorized servicer cannot reset your password or recover data from the hard disk.
Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Sleep problems The critical low-battery error message appears, and the computer immediately turns off. • The battery power is getting low. Connect the AC power adapter to the computer, or replace the battery with a fully charged one. The computer enters sleep mode immediately after Power-on self-test (POST). • Make sure that: - The battery is charged. - The operating temperature is within the acceptable range. See “Chapter 2.

Troubleshooting A hard disk drive problem The hard disk drive does not work. • In the Startup menu in the BIOS setup utility, make sure that the hard disk drive is included in the Boot Priority Order list. Other problems 28 Your computer does not respond. • To turn off your computer, press and hold the power button for 4 seconds or more. If the computer still does not respond, remove the battery pack and the AC power adapter.

CRU (Customer Replaceable Units) instructions Notes: • Make sure the battery has been removed before replacing any devices. • Write down the WLAN serial number on the attached label before removing the backup battery and Mini PCI Express Card. The serial number is required by Lenovo to replace with the proper unit. Replacing the battery ------------------------------------------------------------------------Note: Use only the battery provided by Lenovo. Any other battery could ignite or explode.

You can purchase a new hard disk drive from your reseller or Lenovo marketing representative. Notes: • Replace the hard disk drive only if you upgrade it or have it repaired.

CRU (Customer Replaceable Units) instructions Replacing memory ------------------------------------------------------------------------------You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a double-data-rate three low voltage synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR3L SDRAM)-available as an option-in the memory slot of your computer. DDR3L SDRAMs are available in various capacities. Note: Use only the memory types supported by your computer.

CRU (Customer Replaceable Units) instructions 6 If two DDR3L SDRAMs are already installed in the memory slot, remove one of them to make room for the new one by pressing out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time. Be sure to save the old DDR3L SDRAM for future use. a a b 7 Align the notch of the DDR3L SDRAM with the protrusion of the socket and gently insert the DDR3L SDRAM into the socket at a 30-45° angle.
