Chapter5.UsingtheSetupUtility

TheSetupUtilityprogramisusedtoviewandchangethecongurationsettingsofyourcomputer,regardless

ofwhichoperatingsystemyouareusing.However,theoperating-systemsettingsmightoverrideanysimilar

settingsintheSetupUtilityprogram.

StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram

TostarttheSetupUtilityprogram,dothefollowing:

1.Makesureyourcomputeristurnedoff.

2.RepeatedlypressandreleasetheF1keywhenturningonthecomputer.Whenyouhearmultiple

beepsorseealogoscreen,releasetheF1key.

Note:Ifauserpasswordoranadministratorpasswordhasbeenset,theSetupUtilityprogrammenu

isnotdisplayeduntilyoutypethecorrectpassword.Formoreinformation,see“Usingpasswords”

TheSetupUtilityprogrammightstartautomaticallywhenPOSTdetectsthathardwarehasbeenremovedor

newhardwarehasbeeninstalledinyourcomputer.

Viewingandchangingsettings

TheSetupUtilityprogrammenulistsitemsthatidentifysystemcongurationtopics.Tovieworchange

settings,see“StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage17.

WhenworkingwiththeSetupUtilityprogrammenu,youmustusethekeyboard.Thekeysusedtoperform

varioustasksaredisplayedatthebottomofeachscreen.

Usingpasswords

ByusingtheSetupUtilityprogram,youcansetpasswordstopreventunauthorizedaccesstoyourcomputer

anddata.See“StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage17.Thefollowingtypesofpasswordsare

available:

•UserPassword

•AdministratorPassword

Youdonothavetosetanypasswordstouseyourcomputer.However,usingpasswordsimproves

computingsecurity.Ifyoudecidetosetanypasswords,readthefollowingsections.

Passwordconsiderations

Apasswordcanbeanycombinationofupto12alphabeticandnumericcharacters(a-zand0-9).For

securityreasons,itisrecommendedtouseastrongpasswordthatcannotbeeasilycompromised.Toset

astrongpassword,usethefollowingguidelines:

•Haveatleasteightcharactersinlength

•Containatleastonealphabeticcharacterandonenumericcharacter

•SetupUtilityprogramandharddiskdrivepasswordsarenotcasesensitive

•Notbeyournameoryourusername
