Chapter6.UsingtheSetupUtility

TheSetupUtilityprogramisusedtoviewandchangethecongurationsettingsofthecomputer,regardless

ofwhichoperatingsystemyouareusing.However,theoperating-systemsettingsmightoverrideanysimilar

settingsintheSetupUtilityprogram.

StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram

TostarttheSetupUtilityprogram,dothefollowing:

1.Ifthecomputerisalreadyonwhenyoustartthisprocedure,shutdowntheoperatingsystemandturn

offthecomputer.

2.PressandholdtheF1keythenturnonthecomputer.Whenyouhearmultiplebeeps,releasetheF1key.

Notes:

a.IfyouareusingaUSBkeyboardandtheSetupUtilityprogramdoesnotdisplayusingthismethod,

repeatedlypressandreleasetheF1keyratherthanleavingitpressedwhenturningonthecomputer.

b.Ifauserpasswordoranadministratorpasswordhasbeenset,theSetupUtilityprogrammenuisnot

displayeduntilyoutypeyourpassword.Formoreinformation,see“Usingpasswords”onpage39.

TheSetupUtilitymightstartautomaticallywhenPOSTdetectsthathardwarehasbeenremovedornew

hardwarehasbeeninstalledinthecomputer.

Viewingandchangingsettings

TheSetupUtilityprogrammenulistsitemsthatidentifysystemcongurationtopics.Tovieworchange

settings,see“StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage39.

WhenworkingwiththeSetupUtilityprogrammenu,youmustusethekeyboard.Thekeysusedtoperform

varioustasksaredisplayedatthebottomofeachscreen.

Usingpasswords

ByusingtheSetupUtilityprogram,youcansetpasswordstopreventunauthorizedpersonsfromgaining

accesstothecomputeranddata.See“StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage39

.Thefollowing

typesofpasswordsareavailable:

•UserPassword

•AdministratorPassword

Youdonothavetosetanypasswordstousethecomputer.However,ifyoudecidetosetanypasswords,

readthefollowingsections.

Passwordconsiderations

Apasswordcanbeanycombinationofuptotwelvecharacters(a-zand0-9)andsymbols.Forsecurity

reasons,itisagoodideatouseastrongpasswordthatcannotbeeasilycompromised.Passwordsshould

adheretothefollowingrules:

•Haveatleasteightcharactersinlength

•Containatleastonealphabeticcharacterandonenumericcharacter
