Chapter6.UsingtheSetupUtility
TheSetupUtilityprogramisusedtoviewandchangethecongurationsettingsofyourcomputer,regardless
ofwhichoperatingsystemyouareusing.However,theoperating-systemsettingsmightoverrideanysimilar
settingsintheSetupUtilityprogram.
StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram
TostarttheSetupUtilityprogram,dothefollowing:
1.Ifyourcomputerisalreadyonwhenyoustartthisprocedure,shutdowntheoperatingsystemand
turnoffthecomputer.
2.PressandholdtheF1keythenturnonthecomputer.
3.ReleasetheF1key.
Notes:
a.IfyouareusingaUSBkeyboardandtheSetupUtilityprogramdoesnotdisplayusingthismethod,
repeatedlypressandreleasetheF1keyratherthanleavingitpressedwhenturningonthecomputer.
b.Ifauserpasswordoranadministratorpasswordhasbeenset,theSetupUtilityprogrammenuisnot
displayeduntilyoutypeyourpassword.Formoreinformation,see"Usingpasswords"onpage39.
TheSetupUtilitymightstartautomaticallywhenPOSTdetectsthathardwarehasbeenremovedornew
hardwarehasbeeninstalledinyourcomputer.
Viewingandchangingsettings
TheSetupUtilityprogrammenulistsitemsthatidentifysystemcongurationtopics.Tovieworchange

.
WhenworkingwiththeSetupUtilityprogrammenu,youmustusethekeyboard.Thekeysusedtoperform
varioustasksaredisplayedatthebottomofeachscreen.
Usingpasswords
ByusingtheSetupUtilityprogram,youcansetpasswordstopreventunauthorizedpersonsfromgaining
accesstoyourcomputeranddata.See"StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram"onpage39.Thefollowing
typesofpasswordsareavailable:
•UserPassword
•AdministratorPassword
Youdonothavetosetanypasswordstouseyourcomputer.However,ifyoudecidetosetanypasswords,
readthefollowingsections.
Passwordconsiderations
Apasswordcanbeanycombinationofuptotwelvealphabeticandnumericcharacters(a-zand0-9).For
securityreasons,itisagoodideatouseastrongpasswordthatcannotbeeasilycompromised.Passwords
shouldadheretothefollowingrules:
•Haveatleasteightcharactersinlength
